Musberger simply needs to hang it up. What is his over under on mispronouncing names at the game Friday?

He's no Keith Jackson!

Go Hawks!!!

We've had so many memorable games with Musburger on the call, that I don't care. No denying he carries the most cultural weight among the ESPN-set of announcers so I'll take it. I always loved Kevin Nealon's impersonation of him too.

The measure of his longevity is in the fact that The Brent Musberger Drinking Game has had to be altered so many times because his "pardners" keep changing...but he doesn't.

In other words, he may be an abrasive a&&, but he's OUR abrasive a&&. Frankly, he's America's abrasive a&&.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again...

If you need the announcers to make watching the game more enjoyable for you, you're paying attention to the wrong things.

I rarely notice announcers calling a college football game. I have about 100 Hawk football game broadcasts edited and saved on my hard drives at home, and I can't name the announcers on more than a couple of them.

Which just makes you a weirdo, more than anything.

Most of us can name the announcers of most of the key plays in Iowa history.

Don't care who the announcers are really. As long as it is not Beth. I am certainly not going to be sitting on the edge of my seat waiting for Jessie to break down a play. Brent's ok...but probably won't hear much he has to say until I watch a replay of the game.

I always appreciate it when the announcers are able to match numbers to names and pronounce them correctly...no matter which announcer it might be. Professional announcing...

I've been an announcer, and you will always make a mistake! I was never at the level of Musberger, but I like the guy. "Blocked! Scooped up. This is gonna be a Hawkeye touchdown"!

Come on, that's not fair. No one can duplicate Keith Jackson.

Also Jesse Palmer is a huge, Connor Cook like douche.

If I recall, when Hayden was coach "Mushburger" was perceived as the same type of "Iowa is a pretender" pundit that people complained about this year.....maybe not so much now...

Hayden's pronunciation was "Mushbarger", to be exact. Hayden wasn't a big fan. I remember at an IC I-Club breakfast before a home game, after Brent had signed a big new TV contract, when Hayden was joking about Mushbarger having to be careful not to fall down when he sat on his wallet. You had to be there, but it was some funny stuff. Brent didn't generally have much respect for the Hawks back in the day. He always gravitated to the blue bloods and tended to hype our higher-profile opponents, even when we were just as good if not better.

All of that said, I don't have a big problem with Musburger. Still have fond memories of watching him, Irv Cross, Phyllis George, and Jimmy the Greek on CBS' "NFL Today" back when the "Purple People Eaters" played for the Vikings and the "Steel Curtain" played for the Steelers. I think he calls a pretty good game, even if he does call us the "Hockeyes".

You guys say what you want, but to my ear it's "Huckeyes". Or maybe even "Hckeyes".
