My prediction for tonight

Iowa comes out and gets behind early running up and down in a track meet. Then Iowa slows down a little in the 2nd half and makes it close. If Gessel is on his game we win late. If he isn't great at the end we will lose.

My prediction. If we shoot 47% fg and 41% 3pt, and make 14 or more free throws, we win.

I just don't see how they match up with us. Layman on Uthoff, Sulaimon on Jok, and Trimble on Gesell. Leaves a big on Sapp? There will be mismatches. Hopefully we can exploit them. I also think we can pressure them and force turnovers. They turn it over a lot. We convert those mistakes into points and I think we win a close one. Hawks 78 Terps 74.

I've said this a few times already, but yes there's going to be a really weird cross match for most of the game and I'm very curious to see how Fran attacks it. We may have an advantage but you also don't want a fairly low usage guy like Clemmons to be trying to force things just because he has a different match up. You want him to attack when he has an advantage but not try to do things outside his usual game.

I predict Fran will mix up defenses a lot since it is a turnover-prone team. Game will be decided on if we stay hot from 3 or not.

Iowa by 8
Whether Iowa wins this game or not, Iowa is playing with house money, very few predicted Iowa to run the gauntlet of these last 8 games unscathed, but today we could to do just that ....not a critical game to win although if Iowa does win it will almost assuredly put Iowa in the drivers seat to win the Big Ten Championship. Maryland comes into tonight's game needing to win this game to have a chance to stay in contention for the Big title, Iowa on the other hand can stand to loose and still win the Big....which team do you think is under the most pressure to win this game....hint: it's not Iowa. Win or lose, Iowa is in great shape, Maryland on the other hand has to rely on others to help their chances to finish where they were predicted to finish at the start of the season. Enjoy the game tonight and don't lose any sleep if indeed Iowa comes up on the short end of the stick....

Maryland's MO is that it is sloppy with the ball, plays close games at home, and relies on Trimble to bail them out at the end. It's worked for 13 Big Ten home games so far, but none of those has been against Iowa. And Maryland was fortunate to nip Wisconsin at home on a last-second shot and narrowly got by NW in College Park. Those who fear the student section tonight apparently haven't heard of the Izzone at East Lansing. To refresh some memories (like TK), Iowa slipped out of that firestorm in East Lansing with a 17-point win. Oh, and BTW, shortly after that, Maryland went to EL and collected one of its two conference losses.

So sure, respect the turtles. But Maryland has consistently been less than the sum of its parts, and I don't think it has the heart that this Hawkeye team has. Iowa wins again. Book it.

I know some posters mean well, and just want the Hawks to be great like the rest of us....

...but can we please stop the 'playing with house money' schtick?

It's a defeatist attitude & only makes it sound like Iowa is here for the slightly better record instead of going for it all.

The same card was played when Iowa made it to the B1G title game. Yeah, it was great getting there, but saying to hell with the 'house money' and winning the whole damn thing sounds a bit more fun doesn't it?

I think we have trouble containing Trimble tonight. He'll get to the free throw line a lot tonight and we just won't be able to overcome it... Really hope I'm wrong. Maryland 75 Iowa 68.

Hawks by 5. Will be hotly contested and close through out but we keep our focus and win in the last few minutes.

i see where you are coming from and i agree to a point, but i don't see the parallels with the two scenarios you gave. the B1G CG was for all the marbles and this mid point basketball game is just one of 18. we probably ain't gonna win em all and that still won't drown our hopes of a BB championship.

i hope the team realizes this and comes out tight but loose tonight.

Line opens Pick, climbs all the way to Iowa +5.5, now back down to +5.0. I would have guessed a line anywhere from Iowa +1.5 to 3.0. Makes me wonder if Gesell's hamstring is more concerning than I'm aware of.

Trimble's gonna get his, to good of a player not to. Minimize Maryland's 2nd chances on the offensive boards and Iowa gets out of Maryland with the W

I think Woody is the key to this game. Can't let the crown get into his head. Need his defense and rebounding to pull this one out.

Last time he faced us we hit Trimble with a video camera and poked out his eye. He better watch it.

Iowa 87
Mary Land 74

Jok PTC 23pts. 3 steals

My prediction. If we shoot 47% fg and 41% 3pt, and make 14 or more free throws, we win.

Not sure what game these stats refer to (last matchup?) but that should be enough unless MD shoots unconscious.

deadly 3PT shooting early to take the crowd down and clutch FT shooting late to seal the win - that's the formula.

Play good defense and stay out of foul trouble, Iowa wins.

It really is that simple for me.

I think the key is the PG position tonight. If Tremble is allowed to break down our guards and get penetration we are in trouble. They "maryland" have the shooters who can get hot from outside and if they get going it could be ugly.

I think Iowa will have to play a complete game and Woody & Jok have to stay out of foul trouble. Also going to need the bench to show up BIG tonight. I just give the nod to Maryland since its a home game for them and Iowa has never played in that Arena before.

Maryland 82
Iowa 75

I think its a tight ballgame, but Maryland is a tough out at home.

End of thread.

Wow. 17-3. No heart and less than sum of parts? Ok - cool.

Pretty sure it's a close game at the end and MD has the pg to make big plays at the end. Don't like our chances in this one but I've picked against us every away game and we've won. I see MD 76, Hawks 73, now let's go prove me wrong again.

While I am sure the Hawks could run with MD if they want to ( and should on break away opportunities) my reaction to seeing both teams is that Iowa might be well served to force MD into a half court game.

I would only be truly disappointed if Hawks get blown out. And even that doesn't hurt their chances going forward as long as they bounce back.
Really don't know what to expect. While it obviously won't go Iowa's way if they have an off night, maryland's performance is the bigger question mark. I like the sleeping gorilla analogy. Anybody got some big game tranquilizer darts?

Maryland turnover margin per game: -2 (290th nationally)
Iowa turnover margin per game: +4 (13th nationally)

Maryland plays sloppy and I think Iowa makes them pay, thanks in large part due to a turnover discrepancy highly in our favor leading to easy baskets.

Iowa 79
Maryland 71

Actually, if you go by tendencies, I would think Iowa would want to force them to go uptempo and MD would want to slow it down a bit. There's only about one team in the B1G that I would think Iowa would want to slow down, that would be Indiana. They have an advantage over everyone else if things speed up.

I see where you're going with that SSG.
I wasn't referring to the game speed, just making a lame joke about the gorilla reference.
Agree that Iowa might be better off keeping the game tempo up. Deliberate half court sets are probably not their best play against the terps.

Best Player - Toss-up between Melo and Uthoff
More size inside - Advantage Maryland - Foul Trouble could really impact the Hawks
Better Three Point shooters - Advantage Hawks
Better Defense - Advantage Hawks
Home court could be huge in this game, not to mention second trip to the East coast in a week
Maturity - Advantage Hawks
Bottom line, hope the Hawks can come out on top.

Go hawks

No doubt Maryland has talent but IMO they don't utilize it well and don't take care of the basketball. I see Iowa by 10-15 and its not close late. Hasn't iowa beat these guys in the NIT and blew them out in Carver last season. Sure their team is better this season but so is Iowa's. Iowa by 10-15 pts.

Hey, Reindeer Terp, who has Maryland beaten to get to 17-3? And on the other hand, who has Maryland lost to? Thank you. Check back about 8 CT and we'll see what's what. (Denzel Valentine and MSU already know. LOL)

My predictions will be all over the place, so don't bear with me.

Woody must stay out of foul trouble. It would be nice, anyway.

Uthoff goes off and scores 60 points. OK, maybe 40. A lot.

Our bench scores 20-25 and simply outplays their bench.

Keep TOs to a minimum. Turn them a lot.

I see C Williams making an appearance for defensive purposes. Shocked? I my estimation, he should see more time down the stretch and he could be a giant killer on defense. Why do I say this? Because I can.

None of this should hold any water unless it comes true.

And for all the Iowa fans who are nervous about this one, how did you feel before Iowa blew MSU away by 17 in the Breslin Center? Or before Iowa went to Chapel Hill last year? Or at halftime @ Purdue on Rick Mount night? Keep calm and carry on. Iowa is better than Maryland whether they play in College Park, Iowa City, or on the deck of an aircraft carrier.
