Nathan's Hot Dogs

Where are you from that you got that taste in hot dogs? Or did you just discover them by accident?

My old roommate and his dad from Niagara Falls-area originally put me on to Hoffman's about ten years ago. You put me on to Sahlen's a few years ago.

Although it did not play a part in this grilled hot dog discovery, my dad was from Buffalo, as was his dad and his grandfather. I actually grew up in Toronto (moved there from FL when I was 8). Love the Bills.

Ah, awesome. I think we've circled around this before, but I couldn't remember. Glad you've been exposed to them and enjoyed them, nothing else compares. It was always in your blood, just waiting for you.

Really looking forward to the Bills season...thank God they've given me something to cheer for these past years when FSU has been pathetic. I read the training camp reports every day, this could be special this year.

Haven't been to Toronto in quite a few years now, took the kids there probably 10+ years ago on a trip back to Buffalo. My son has picked up Blue Jays fandom along with the Buffalo teams, and the Jays were my team growing up. We've been trying to figure out getting to Toronto for a game, but that's obviously been a no go for a couple years now. We've gone to see them the past couple years when they've played the Braves.

It's been two years since I've been up there. Two years since I've seen my mom.

No reason not to fly back frequently to Buffalo/Niagara once the pandemic is quelled, Allegiant has dirt cheap flights from several Florida medium sized airports. And I mean under $150 round trip before the pandemic.

Edit: I looked it up out of curiousity and as long as you fly at least a month out it’s exactly $100 round trip from St Pete/Clearwater airport to Buffalo.

I handle all the meat shopping at our house. The other day I mentioned to Mrs. Bean that I get a craving for a all out Chicago style hot dog every so often. Well, yesterday she come home with a big smile on her face and proudly presented me with two packages of Nathan's.

First thing I notice is it's only a 12oz package. Then I notice they are the long skinny type of dog, which I don't like. To top it off I notice on the receipt on the sack that they cost $4.99 a package. And, of course, she bought Ball Park hot dog buns. All this means we are off to a bad start. So I say nothing and go take a nap with the dog.

When I wake up I take the high road and tell her we are having hot dogs for supper after happy hour. So I draged all the fixings together and heat the dogs in boiling water for two minutes as directed. I load up the buns and take a bite, not bad. All total I ate three loaded dogs last night and it was just OK. So, I ask you, HROT. Are Nathan's dogs a good buy? I'm leaning towards "NO".
I am having hotdogs for dinner tonight solely because of this thread.

You’re confused. Nathans is not Chicago. Vienna Beef is

You might can't if you aren't in the footprint for Publix or Wegmans unfortunately. Unless there's some regional brand.

That was my life for the first 20 years or so that I moved south.

When Publix started carrying Hoffmans, it improved my life significantly, and I went from having hot dogs once or twice a year to regularly.

Then a couple years later when I walked in and out of nowhere saw Sahlens on the shelf, I dropped to my knees and my eyes teared up. I wish I was joking, but I'm getting emotional thinking about again right now.

Alright, you convinced me to try Sahlens next time I see them.

I think I would say based on this thread, go for it if you're going to grill them. They're meant to be grilled pretty dark.

Maybe not so much if you're going to steam or boil them.

Thats my go to way to cook hot dogs. Grilled at a high heat until they bust with some charring here and there (not blackened all the way). My lazy way of doing it is just on my kitchen range’s griddle done until they burst as well. I never boil or microwave hot dogs or sausages. I will toast or preferably steam the buns to go along with them.
