NBC coverage of Megan Rapinoe

They even showed a video of Biden giving her a medal at the White House. That was a nice touch. Quite relevant.

As the women's team is on the brink of elimination and possibly one of the most disappointing tournaments in recent memory, glad to see the coverage is on the ball.
Did you curl up in a ball and weep softly to yourself when you saw that?

I understand them quite well. You should be more well read.

How many teams do you think clinch qualification to the knockout round after 2 games?

Is Alex Morgan still on the team? She and Rapinoe are the only two players I could name without google. And I’m guessing I’m much closer to the norm than memorized roster guy.
Michelle Akers, Mia Hamm, and Brandi Chastain.

You should get to know the new girls. They will be around a while. One of them is Dennis Rodman's daughter, who he pretty much abandoned for most of her life.

A non-starter on the U.S. Women's Soccer Team.

Earlier this morning on the NBC Today Show they featured her on the preview of the upcoming match, opposite of a Portuguese player.

This evening, NBC Nightly news had a segment on her.

I don't believe she even played against the Netherlands. Looks like she got in against Vietnam.

Why is a non-starter being featured so heavily?
Same thing can be said of Abby Wambach (my all-time favorite player) in her last World Cup as a non-starter.

She made some great moves at the end. She was a bright spot amongst the flailing stars. Try to not live life in hate

She was not good....it's time for her to move on. She is 38 with a lot of mile on her...she has done amazing things to grow the game and is an icon in the sport, but she's like Willie Mays on the Mets at this point.

She called out Trump during his terrible Presidency and the pathetic snowflake loser Trump couldn't take it. He then ripped her on one of his cry tweets and the MAGAt horde hates her and Team USA soccer still to this day.
Example #1

Poor Megan...

Hmm… a sport that has been capturing the country since like what, 96? Maybe you’re the outsider here
How much longer is this sport going to capture the country, now that the rest of the world has caught up to them? Lost in the Olympics, can't score at the world cup. They can no longer walk onto the pitch and name the score.

There’s already an established base. USMNT hasn’t been good an there are local watch groups all over and massive attendance at games

Just win the ****ing game.

Which they didn't do, but still managed to advance.

Rapinhoe probably begged NBC to put her on so she can finally get the media attention she craves. Why the US even allows players like this on the team at all when their whole purpose is "look at me and my new ridiculous hair color" and "listen to me make the World Cup all about politics."

I don't even watch the women's team after that display 4 years ago. Try being proud to represent you country for a change and maybe viewers will come back, but this team's performance so far is not a good argument for equal pay with the men.

Whenever and however this tournament ends there will ba a run of interviews and pieces on her for a good 6 months and then she will probably end up in a broadcast booth for life

That would be ratings suicide for the uswnt.

You would lose alot of crossover fans, such as myself, who can appreciate the game but don't want the bullshit. Frankly, they are not good enough anymore for the off the field shit.

Get back to actually winning.

Also, those of you saying Megan is some top player for our team must have a pretty limited scope of our history.

She has like 65 goals in 200 caps for a team that was regularly beating teams 5,6,7 -0 when she started, and she is the 2nd or 3rd best player, in her prime, on a descending team.

She got to live her dream, good for her, Good luck to her moving forward.

She's incredibly talented, I noticed her because of plays she made in the first two games - didn't realize she was his daughter until the end of last game. Look forward to seeing more from her!

She might be a fringe top 10 all time player but comparing her to MJ is.. lol.

Fine. If I said… Dan Fouts? Hall of famer. But not the goat and certainly not top 5? But def one of the best to ever do it?

She isn’t MJ. More than fair point.

Every once in a while, I hear something about Babe Ruth. So what is your point?

I have no beef with Rapinoe. She’s been great for the US and deserves the praise and accolades.

But I am ready for her to move on. IMO, she has moved into that phase where it’s more about her than the team and I think it’s to the team’s detriment at this point. Just an unnecessary distraction. I suspect if the players could speak freely they’re not all fans of her.

I'm not the hugest fan of Rapione but to be fair to her she was a legit star that is at the tail end of her career. Likely brought to the World Cup to provide experience and leadership more than play.

For all the stuff about politics or the anthem... whatever.

Nothing was more un-American to me than watching the team dancing and celebrating eeking out a draw against a vastly inferior team (on paper).

You have played 1 good half of soccer and that was against the Netherlands in that 2nd half. The other 5 halves have been garbage and you celebrated like you did something. Stop celebrate being average. Go take the title.

That's going to be difficult for USWNT to do now and in the future.

The US Women had an early clear advantage in development thanks to Title IX considering their opposition didn't have school sports and development was done by pro-teams that did not generally have women's teams.

But things have changed, European clubs started forming women's teams and women's leagues are playing in Europe. In England play started in 2011. Clubs are starting to develop their women's players in a similar way they have done the men's players.

The women are slowly moving towards the difficulties their male counterparts faced for a very long time.

Whereas from 14 to 18 US players are going to be working under amateur coaches who are usually teachers by trade and playing against teams where they will almost never see a future professional player and then in college they will have professional coaches but still be playing against competition where the vast majority of them will never play pro-ball.

In Europe from 14 onwards they will play under professional coaches who's only job is coaching up and developing kids and they will play against competition that over time increasingly weeds out players who have no hopes of playing pro-ball to the point that when they hit 18 nearly every player they face will be a pro-player in the future.

I don't expect the USWNT to be dominate for very long. They may honestly never win a world cup again or if they do it may be decades into the future.
