NCAA bans satellite camps

In fairness all of the other Power 5 conferences are against this, they all scared of the BIG.

I don't think anyone down south is scared of the B1G. They just don't like the status quo changing and right now everybody bows to their wishes. This is no different. If the SEC wasn't the front runners in open complaints about this then I don't think we would have a record time decision from the NCAA. These jack wagons can't make a decision in years but somehow this one got banned within weeks. Maybe the NCAA is just faster now, but I doubt it.

Lol, ask Ott about that one.

Last week was the last time NCAA basketball and football could be played on FanDual and DraftKings. Iowa has been one of the handful of states not allowing it's residents to play but living in Arkansas I'm going to miss it.

Since there is a campus in Des Moines does that make Des Moines with in the 50 mile radius?
I think it will be cancelled because not only is the main campus more than 50 miles, but they're also not using school facilities which seems to be another issue in case they wanted to use the Des Moines campus argument.

That is truly a shame. I can't imagine the event really has much of an effect besides making some local kids very happy. Might be the only chance some of them get to see the hawks in person, while they're kids.

There were other conferences that complained about this also .
You mean the ACC. Stick your head in the sand if you must. This was the SEC all the way. Whenever the SEC needs a ruling to go their way stuff gets done in a record pace. Remember Cam Newton. But I guess things went well for team SEC. So keep on cheering that team like every other SC fan does.

The do what the SEC wants rule :)

Just read a story about how the SEC lobbied to get this rule passed. So, it helps the SEC and HURTS prospective High school athletes who want to show case their talents to Colleges in other regions.

Again, the NCAA makes a decision to protect a Ca$h cow, this time...........the SEC FB cash cow.

Now if we can ban bowl games in the south which are essentially home games for some conferences. Also would be great to have playoff games at the higher seeded schools home field. Let the SEC schools come up and play in B10 country during Janurary

It would be great to see a team from Florida, Alabama, Louisiana come up and play a team in Iowa, Chicago, Michigan after say, November 1st.

You saw the precursor of this a few years back. It was the year all/most of the bowl games were played in the coldest nov/dec/Jan in a very long time. Northern teams fared very well that year. Of particular note was the Wisconsin/Miami game. Whisky pummeled them and all during the game whisky players were standing on the sidelines wearing only their jerseys. When they panned to miami's sideline players were huddled around heaters wearing those long capes. Hell, even the whisky fans were relatively lightly dressed compared to the Miami players.

Probably not, since it's a practice and not a camp. And the kids clinic was limited to those 12 and under.

Is Iowa's spring game in Des Moines considered a satellite camp?
No because it was already scheduled before the new rule (change) took effect (grandfathered).

The Spring scrimmage is a Practice for the Hawkeye Football team.
It's not a recruiting camp, like Hairball was doing dowin in Florida

I'm sure the SEC had some undue influence on this decision and that's a shame on the NCAA. I also think if Harbaugh hadn't made such an obnoxious three ring circus out of it, it wouldn't have been such an issue. His smugness didn't help the rest of us in the B1G.

The SEC initiated the complaint. The other P5 conferences (ACC, Texas, and P10) all went along with the SEC since they all recruit locally/within conference. Interestingly, 4 of the 5 G5 conferences joined with the B10 in wanting to keep the camps.

obviously not has it was held. to me this will not Hurt IA has the coaches/KF has done a very good job in finding under rated and under recruited players since he has been here, Sanders, Greenway and lately Graham from Alabama,, KF does not use satilite camps and from what I heard he does not like them.

what I don't like is that coaches from the small schools can no longer go to a school like O$U that invites them to their camps on their campus to evaluate the players that attend, this is what is wrong about this rule, this is a big issue on ESPN, SB Nation and Yahoo, The small schools might have to take this to court as I feel this was railroaded thru to placate the SEC,

I am fine with the rule. I don't think the camps really did anything anyway plus smaller schools couldn't afford to do them. I think if they changed the rules about official visits, i.e. made it so kids could take them sooner this would really help more than the camps.
Also, I love that the new ISU coach is so butthurt about the camp. And find it funny people that support it are trying to say it hurts the players like that is who they are looking out for.

I heard this won't affect the des moines thing because it is a practice and not a camp.

The P5 conferences all have incentive to limit BIG 10's ability to recruit out of region. The BIG 10 has a lot of well resourced programs with rabid fans, but lacks the the geographic recruiting advantages of the other P5s. Official visits should absolutely be allowed starting around Spring break of the Junior year or at the very least over the summer. But I'm not sure the other P5's care, because they don't want more competition in their regions.

An early signing period is a must as well. Doesn't make any sense why it isn't allowed in football but it is in basketball. It would free up that last part of recruiting to just focus on guys you are still trying to get instead of spending all that time on continually recruiting the guys already committed.

This is an absolute disgrace. In an effort to placate the SEC, the NCAA has just destroyed the visibility these camps give to athletes who may not be quite good enough to play at the school's camp they are attending, but could be noticed by the countless smaller schools (MAC) in attendance. Now, the camps are closed, those kids will either have to attend multiple camps in multiple states, if they can even afford it, and the smaller schools will have to spend more money to go find these kids. It baffles me that the Big 12 went with this, unless of course, Texas is the reason, as they are the closest to the SEC in terms of this rule protecting their home turf.

Mike and Mike were hammering the NCAA forth very part of the rule change this morning. I don't understand why them made this change. Why not let coaches attend other school's camps? To me, football camps should be basically an open deal. Any coach can attend for any reason. Open them up to the other coaches. I can understand a little bit the idea of doing away with the satellite camps, but I don't understand not letting coaches attend other camps.

blanket bans like this are absurd, it does not help the student Athlete,

while I maintain that the kids still need to take the 1st step by sending in game films with the help of their HS Coach who can also weed out the kids offers as being a good fit as well, most of these players need help in determining the right school Academically, as it is obvious that 90% won't get a sniff from the NFL,

But if you good enough the NFL will find you, be it DI or D2.

It really hurts the kids who are not necessarily good enough for many of the larger schools. NCAA pissed down their leg on this one.

LOL. Even the B1G wouldn't like to play anyone in January and don't. I tell you what. Go and ask LSU to play Iowa in a home and home. I bet they would agree in a flash regardless of the dates. They are having a hard time getting their required quota of Power Five Teams to play them.

That would be a fun home n home. I've been to a game there. Great enviornment. Would be great to see them in Kinnick as well.

I'm fine with keeping bowl games down south, but will never understand why big 10 teams have to go to texas to play a texas team, instead of going to ca or fl. or why 3 b1g teams had to go to cali to play 3 cali teams instead of playing them in tx, fl etc. Seems pretty rigged to me.

The same people complaining that spring break travel to Florida was bad for the student athlete are the people who are now taking the opportunity away from high school kids to be seen by college coaches close to their homes. It's sickening, and it ALL LED BY THE SEC. Let's be honest, this isn't going to negatively impact Iowa all that badly, and the number of MAJOR colleges who gained an advantage by satellite camps is minimal (it maybe impacted 1-2 kids per class). The kids that lose are the 1-2 star kids who can't afford to travel to schools hundreds of miles away to take visits, and aren't getting "official's" from big name schools.

It's pathetic, and Nick Saban and his band of criminals are to blame, with half-hearted sign off by the ACC, because FSU, GA Tech and Miami wanted it. It's BS, and the losers aren't B1G schools as much as it is the kids who now must travel and their parents who have to foot the bill. The millionaire's (SEC coaches) are the winners.
