NCAA Tournament Question

I am not sure how seeding priorities work, but if Iowa ends up a #2 seed, are they automatically going to be slotted in with either Baylor or Gonzaga? I know they try to avoid conference matchups, but they wouldn’t meet Michigan or Illinois as a 1 seed until the Elite 8, and there might be 8-9 big ten teams in the tournament so there will be some conference matchups no matter what this year. I’m hoping they just stay true to the S curve and not worry about conference for the 1-2 seeds

The NCAA tournament rules for same conference matchups only apply to the first four, and first round. So anything beyond that, technically, they could face another B1G team.

Michigan, Illinois, Iowa and Ohio St should all be in different regions. If they're not, they need to change the rules back.

Meeting conference foes prior to the regional finals is a new reality, but no way that a conference with 4 teams of Final Four caliber shouldn't have them all in different regions. Same with Baylor, Texas Tech, Kansas & West Virginia, although they aren't nearly as packed toward the top.

If Iowa doesn't want to face Gonzaga or Baylor in the regional finals, they should win their next 4 games.

Yes, you'll be in the Gonzaga or Baylor region. Which do you prefer? Another shot at the Zags or trying to score on that tough, physical Baylor D?

Iowa has already played 6 teams with better defenses than Baylor, including Gonzaga.

I'd rather they see Baylor, if we're talking about trying to get into the FF.

Gonzaga will get the lowest 2 seed and after yesterday with possible 2 seeds like Ohio st, wvu, FSU and nova losing Iowa is more on a path to be in Baylor’s bracket. With IL looking more like 4th 1 seed Iowa and Alabama looking like 2 top 2 seeds after yesterday.

To the OP, assuming Mich, IL, Iowa and OSU are all either 1 or 2 seeds (not sure OSU falls into that any longer), I'd guess they separate the 4 of them. Once you get below the top 2 seeds, I don't know that they'd split them.

Example, if Iowa/OSU hit the 3 line, any region opens up. If they are on the 2 line, I'd think only Baylor/Gonzaga's regions would be likely.

NCAA seeding guidelines state that the top 4 teams from a conference, if they are seeded on the 1-4 lines, shouldn’t be in the same region. So we are likely going to see a 1/4 B1GvsB1G but that will be Michigan/Illinois VS Purdue as Purdue will be the 5th best seeded team in the B1G.

Interesting. I'd have thought they'd cut it off at 2, since if seeding played out, they wouldn't see each other in the Regional finals. But it makes sense they way you stated.

Correct that Purdue would not be protected from playing another 1/2 seeded B1G team but don't think it makes them more likely to be in a Michigan or Illinois region. Checked a few of the top brackets and they have Purdue in a Baylor or Gonzaga region. The committee does try to avoid matching up teams that have already played each other.

Teams from the same conference shall not meet prior to the regional final if they played each other three or more times during the regular season and conference tournament.

Teams from the same conference shall not meet prior to the regional semifinals if they played each other twice during the regular season and conference tournament.

Teams from the same conference may play each other as early as the second round if they played no more than once during the regular season and conference tournament.

Obviously we won't know about any potential "3rd games" between teams until the BTT takes place.

All I know is.....wherever Iowa is placed, they are going to get screwed.
