Of course, part of the problem there is that those rankings are entirely subjective by the people who vote on them. No set criteria they have to consider. There are many who have the opinion that the 12th ranked team and the 9th ranked team don't deserve a 1st round bye.
Unreal comeback. Great game by ASU. Got no problem with the conf champions getting byes in the CFP until expansion to 16 spots.
Honestly, I thought PSU/Boise was competitive - PSU clearly better, but Boise made them work for it.It is nice that we finally had a competitive CFP game.
How good go you think Texas is? Sure, they made the final 4, but Ohio State or Oregon is next.
I think Texas loses in the next round. They've had a real easy schedule. The wins in conference are against the 9,10,11,12,13,15, and 16th place finishers in the sec. Two losses to Georgia. They took advantage of a schedule similar to the one Iowa had.Honestly, I thought PSU/Boise was competitive - PSU clearly better, but Boise made them work for it.
As opposed to SMU who clearly weren't ready for the moment.
Should have finished the regular season better then.I think the way BYU demolished Colorado, they probably would’ve been a better fit than SMU.
When Texas gets into an offensive rhythm I think they're an excellent team. They've shown however that if they get punched in the face they have a difficult time time getting back to that.I think Texas loses in the next round. They've had a real easy schedule. If they tweak anything next year - imo they ought to establish (publicly) what their criteria is for voting teams.
I think Texas is extremely talented. And did I hear the next game is in Jerry World? That’s certainly an advantage. But I also think Ohio State’s best game trumps Texas’s best game. But only if Day continues to let it all hang out. If he gets conservative Texas can certainly win.It is nice that we finally had a competitive CFP game.

Problem with this is I don’t like not having stakes in the conference title game; they’d be meaningless in this scenario.IMO, this is what they should do:
* Rank the top 25 teams (maybe use the old BCS computer, to eliminate bias)
* Give the top 4 ranked teams first round byes (this year, the teams with byes would have been #1 Oregon, #2 Georgia, #3 Texas, #4 Penn State).
But that's just me.
What they did this year, instead:

Something Iowa couldn't do at home! They only had to beat Iowa State to win their conference.

Agreed.I think winning the conference title alone is meaningful enough for EVERY team.
Even national title contenders have "conf champ" on their list of goals every year.
Heck, we keep calling the bowl games meaningless, but a lot of teams/fans are wound up about them and using it as THE measuring stick across teams/conferences. (See Michigan and Alabama)
Agreed.
I’m. To sure there’s a good fix here. Case in point would be Ohio state this year. Should Penn state have gotten a first round bye over Ohio state despite losing to them in the regular season?
At the end of the day, I think they got the correct 12 teams in this year, the quibbling to me is more about the seeding.
wouldn't that piss off the SEC fanboys to no end?Are we looking at an all B1G National Championship game?
