I know this is early, but A group of us are trying to figure out a way to get to Nationals this year. The hotels around Madison Square Grden are quite spendy. So does anyone have any ideas where a good place to stay would be? I'm sure we will have to take the subway or taxi, but any suggestions would be great. We would like to figure out if we can swing it soon. Thanks.

Rates aren't that bad for Manhattan actually. Plenty of hotels for around $250-300/night. Cheaper than hotels when nationals were in DSM OKC or STL downtown areas.

What are you looking to spend? If that's too much try naming your own price on Priceline or see what they offer on express deals. May be some good deals this far in advance. Normally you get what you pay for in Manhattan.

"$250/300 a night, not too bad"

I'm sorry but what world are you living in? That's outrageous.

Try looking in New Jersey, along the railroad lines (my recommendation is by Newark Airport...the rail lines from Jersey run into Penn Station, which is literally the bottom few floors of the building that contains Madison Square Garden)...you'll find more earth-bound hotel prices.

$250-300 a night is a normal price for a hotel room Manhattan, actually, even if that's an absurd price for anything other than the executive suite at the Ritz-Carlton in Iowa City.

If you can't afford to go to NYC, but want to see NCAA championship wrestling, come to Cedar Rapids for DIII's. The wrestling is exciting, there are more bars and restaurants within walking distance of the venue than you can shake a stick at AND Sandy Stevens will be announcing. PLUS - you are invited to my free reception at the Marriott on Thursday evening.

We're a bunch of high school employees and coaches, so $300 a night may be a little to rich for our blood. But we do have 2 engineers coming with us, maybe they can play for the rooms. HAHA. Thanks for the suggestions. We've heard that Newark NJ may be a good place, so I'll check there. Hopefully it works out. I just wish it was in St. Louis every year.

Haha yes for Manhattan they aren't bad but let's not act like those aren't ridiculous. Last year I found a nice hotel room in St Louis for $158 a night, just was looking at Manhattan and for that quality it would be $400+ a night. I hate NCAA's being there

Between tickets, hotel, plane ride, food, be prepared to spend a lot.

I attended the Golovkin/ Lemieux title fight at the Garden about a month ago. A Bud costs $10.50. Waters are typically $5.50 a piece. Most entrees are in the 20s; most snacks are in the teens.
Two tiny chicken tacos for 11 bucks. A bag of Cracker Jacks $6.25 . $18.95 prime rib sandwich

Carnegie Deli is my favorite. This stand serves the same thinly-sliced, pleasantly-fatty pastrami that made the Midtown deli famous , a large pile of meat on a bun for just $15 .

I would suggest not going in hungry. Endless restaurants within walking distance.

I love the nationals coming east once in a while but is NYC within a few hours of the majority of college wrestling fans? I don't think so.

Wrestlers in Business did an unscientific Linked-in study and there are more Linked-in members who mentioned wrestling in some way within 100 miles of NYC than any other market in America. Of course that's because it's the largest market in America.

Got a room right across the street from MSG for $350 a night. If that helps give anybody some comparison as far as distance and price when searching for rooms.

^ then I couldn't afford spendy rooms for nationals. Having no kids or sense of responsibility has it's advantages.

Check the site NYCGo.com ... I just did a search from March 17 to checkout March 21.

There are a lot of rooms in Midtown Manhattan (where you'd consider the closest area to MSG)

It really is simple to get anywhere in NYC via the subway. Just make sure you find the trains that go to Penn Station. It lets you out underneath MSG. I know some mass transit systems can be daunting to those unfamiliar.

Not sure if that link will show the same thing I saw on my screen, but if you have any ideas of driving in and parking next to the venue, eliminate those real quick. I just flew into NYC this morning, got a cab from the airport, dropped me off at my hotel and I'm using the subway to get around for pretty cheap for the Grapple at the Garden.

I go to NYC 2 to 3 times per year. I usually take the wife and we stay in mid-town near Times Square and always find a nice place last minute for under $250/night. The other times we take our three children and usually get a suite at the Secaucus NJ Embassy Suites. The bus station is 50 yards from the front door and it's an 11 minute ride to the Port Authority at 41st and 8th, which is about a 20 minute walk to MSG or about a $5.00 cab ride if the weather is bad.

You could book something now to hold a room and check around last minute for the best deals. Make sure the hotel you book at has a no-fee cancellation policy and that you understand the policy.

Depends on what you consider the majority of college wrestling fans. Iowa draws great crowds, but those 15K that can jam into Carver don't all go to the NCAA's. When you consider how dense the population is and how many wrestling schools and high school programs are within 200 miles of NYC, you get a pretty good group of fans that also don't make it out to OKC or St. Louis, where that's a reasonable drive for midwestern folk.

I'm unsure if The Garden will bid on this again, but this is a prime time place and a prime time arena. I love the fact it's in the Garden. I like St. Louis and I'd love to see Kansas City get another crack at it soon. OKC is a good time, too.

But there's a large group of wrestling fans who can't just hop in a car and be somewhere they host the D1's within a 6-8 hour drive. First time since Philly (and only the second in 13 years) it's been within a drive of the plurality of the D1 programs.

When I was operating InterMat from 2005-08, the largest collection of Premium Service subscribers were from PA, NJ, NY and VA. Iowa was 2nd, but there was no other state in that "bubble" around St. Louis that was in the top 10. What's this say? I don't know exactly, other than there are large populations of wrestling fans who don't live within the St. Louis "reasonable drive" zone. For some people, this will be cheaper than trying to go to St. Louis.

Our room in NYC will cost about the same as our room in downtown StL did this year (~1200 for 4 nights, though we stayed close to the arena and we'll be about 5 blocks from MSG). Get 2-3 people in a room and it's not so bad...at least that's what I keep telling myself. :)

Spot on!!

Hilton Garden Inn Secaucus/Meadowlands (12 minute subway ride to MSG) shows $153 cancelable rates for all 4 nights ($750 w/ tax). AAA rate of $143 ($675 w/ tax). King bed/junior suite is $156 with AAA rate.
