NDSU AA's Caliendo and Franek Announce Transfer to Iowa

Both AA last year. 157 & 165.

Nice additions. But don't we already have wrestlers at those weights?
Franek has 1 year left. - will compete with Siebrecht and Ferrari (assuming he rectifies admission situation, plus Ferrari can redshirt then take control of the spot for 4 years after).
Caliendo has 3 years left. Somebody will definitely be sitting between Him/Kennedy/Brands.

2023-2024 - We'll have 3 really good wrestlers for 165/174 (Kennedy/Caliendo/Brands + Arnold Redshirting)
2024-2025 - We'll have 3 really good wrestlers for 165/174 (Kennedy/Caliendo/Arnold)
2025-2026 - We'll have 3 really good wrestlers for 165/174 (Kennedy/Caliendo/Arnold)

Good problem to have. May the best man win the spot and score us many team points at NCAA's.

Man. I know this is good for the program, and the way the current landscape and game has to be played, but there's something a little less fun about this for me. I'm sure I'll be over it by March.
I tend to agree. Say what you want about PK but he had a tough ass road to hoe last March. Sure we’re bringing in an AA but I’m not certain we’re bringing in a better wrestler.
Competition is usually a good thing, but in the era of transfers it sometimes means less depth.

149 - cobe/voinovich
157 - franek
165 - caliendo/pk
174 - caliendo/pk
184 - nelson
197 assad
This might be the answer. Maybe Abe’s injury issues had to deal with a bigger cut. This off-season does not stop throwing curve balls.

When do we hear about these gambling allegations officially and associated penalties?

Its called get all the talent you can and the best will start. Has anyone been paying attention lately Cael Sanderson is kicking everyones ASS.

I get it. I'm not mad at Iowa or the coaches about this. Like I said, it just feels a little less fun. Of course this is the game now and they have to play it.

I would say this is the gambling situation. Also can Ferrari come in and “grey shirt” wrestling in the club then start in the 24-25 season?

It looks like the mid majors are just the minor leagues in wrestling. Develop talent and then watch as they move on. Believe in a kid out of high school - develop him- and then watch as he leaves with no sense of loyalty to the school or program.
I know this is different since there was a coaching change at NDSU, but it sure seems like this is the case in most instances.
Maybe after the covid fallout of guys having an extra year things will get back to normal again. Then again, maybe it will get worse.

The 157 addition makes sense. Although I can’t help but wonder if Cobe had two arms this March whether we’d be making this move.

Cobe's resume isn't enough to ward off competition, two arms or not.

Yes, he doesn't need to greyshirt either if he gets admitted, he'll have his regular redshirt to burn.

Yep, PSU has had elite talent rolling with elite talent for a while counting the club people. We haven't even had elite talent at each weight let alone multiple people. Increasing the pool of elite talent in the room is the first step in trying to get a training environment similar to PSU.

I agree.... We do not know that Tom/Terry went after these 2 transfers.... They could have very well approached Iowa wanting to come here and no matter what the circumstances are, I don't see Tom saying no to anyone who can come in and challenge for a starting spot... Bring in the big dogs and let them fight for the front porch..

Franek isn’t coming here to sit his last year, so Ferrari is going to have to redshirt even though he doesn’t want to after taking a year off already. PSU talks big prospects to take all kinds “shirts” to space out guys to get the most out of their over recruiting. Colby finishing career on bench. Ferrari could get 4 matches without loosing his redshirt. Caliendo having several years is interesting, with pk having 3 years, Ferrari maybe out growing 157, and Gabe with 4 years at 174. I guess we are trying to emulate PSU, us fans just aren’t used to it.

Anthony Ferrari is greyshirting now because his HS grad year was 2022.
I'm talking next year, the 23-24 season. I know the 22-23 year was considered a greyshirt year. If he gets admitted 2nd semester, as was the 'plan', then he has his regular redshirt available to burn while sitting behind Franek. Not even entirely sure how long you can greyshirt for, because at some point the d1 eligibility clock starts ticking if you don't have some kind of military/mission exemption. Would that be this upcoming year for Anthony? Or can you theoretically greyshirt for 2 years before enrollment?

These are big time additions. Kudos to the coaches.
Agree. When PSU stacks their room with multiple dudes at the same/similar weights everyone is in awe. When Iowa does it, people question what TnT are thinking. Makes no sense. Not saying these two are on that same level as what PSU has been pulling in, but I agree these are big gets.

He hasn't started his college eligibility though, right? I thought you had to be a full-time student for it to begin.

These are big time pick ups. This could help because of the gambling issue but tbh, no roster spot is safe outside of 141 and HWY.. Particularly excited about Caliendo and his 3 years. As a RSFR, his loses were a combination of O'Toole, Griffith (with one win over him) and Kharchla at NCAAs.

About that Caliendo flex in his instagram post. At first I thought it was Angelo Ferrari.

You know you're around the #FerrariEffect when you see the #FerrariFlex.

I like both of these guy's big time! great job to the coaches bringing in more top AA type talent. Win and your in, you get what you earn!

We are loading the room with high caliber talent, Also possible these guys looking for a place to train after their college career is over, the HWC.
We have guys and girls training freestyle and for MMA and this needs to grow! You think bringing in the UFC as an official sponsor is coincidental and has no impact on recruiting, well it does 100%
