NDSU AA's Caliendo and Franek Announce Transfer to Iowa

Anthony Ferrari redshirting? Whew buddy. That is not going to work out well.

Caliendo makes no sense to me. Kennedy is just as good, same amount of years available. Someone is sitting on the bench. because neither is beating Caliendo and Brands is not an 84.

Welp. Good problems to have I guess.

125: Ayala
133: Teske/Schriever
141: Woods
149: Voinovich/Siebrecht/Rathjen
157: Franek/(Anthony Ferrari)
165: Kennedy/Caliendo/(Anthony Ferrari)
174: Kennedy/Caliendo/Brands
184: Assad/Brands
197: Glazier/Assad
285: Cass
So you think brands will take one for the team again and move up to be an under sized 184 again, if Assad moves up to be undersized 197. They both will struggle completing even deep shots on decent competition. Kobe Franklin would be no worse than Assad.

These are big time pick ups. This could help because of the gambling issue but tbh, no roster spot is safe outside of 141 and HWY.. Particularly excited about Caliendo and his 3 years. As a RSFR, his loses were a combination of O'Toole, Griffith (with one win over him) and Kharchla at NCAAs.
I hadn't watched a whole lot of Caliendo prior to the rumors of him potentially coming here. At first glance he looks like a typical short, jacked, grinder type guy. But he really has some finesse to his offense, the way he gets to his attacks is smooth as butter. I was impressed with the handful of matches I watched. Very glad to have him. Also glad I'm not the one who has to figure the lineup out. 😂

it’s not like we never have injuries to the starters either

I'm talking next year, the 23-24 season. I know the 22-23 year was considered a greyshirt year. If he gets admitted 2nd semester, as was the 'plan', then he has his regular redshirt available to burn while sitting behind Franek. Not even entirely sure how long you can greyshirt for, because at some point the d1 eligibility clock starts ticking if you don't have some kind of military/mission exemption. Would that be this upcoming year for Anthony? Or can you theoretically greyshirt for 2 years before enrollment?

No, you can't. Like I said in my post, he's doing his greyshirt now. You don't get 2.

He hasn't started his college eligibility though, right? I thought you had to be a full-time student for it to begin.

It doesn't go forever or multiple years. The 5 to participate in 4 begins no later than 12 months from graduation year. The 12 months is the greyshirt.

Agree. When PSU stacks their room with multiple dudes at the same/similar weights everyone is in awe. When Iowa does it, people question what TnT are thinking. Makes no sense. Not saying these two are on that same level as what PSU has been pulling in, but I agree these are big gets.

Not too many are questioning, really. Especially not with the gambling probe as an elephant in the room.

Ahh. I didn't know about the 12 month rule. Makes sense now.

Okay then, your "correction" is duly noted.

So Evil Cael isn’t the only one who recruits over kids?

Never has been. Only dolt fans get their panties in a bunch over that. And I know we (and other schools) have a lot of them.

What's the big deal with Ferrari redshirting? Maybe I'm missing something but as of now he's not even admitted to school. There's talk he won't even be on the roster until 2nd semester. I've always considered him a RS. But I know nothing.

I see Caliendo and Kennedy as a coin flip. Caliendo placed but I'd have expected the same results if Kennedy was in his spot on the bracket.

Brands may be personally just fine going 184. 174 is surely more optimal for him but he will be a 6th year guy who'd rather be full feed 184 anyway. He was a NQ a few years back at this weight. But again, not optimal for his performance.

I have a distinct feeling this will all make a lot more sense before they roll out the mats for this season.

Ahh. I didn't know about the 12 month rule. Makes sense now.
He said in his flo interview he has a redshirt to use, but wasn’t planning on using it unless it was the coaches decision. I’m sure that’s what Brands will want him to now, but he needs to compete a lot in his redshirt year. On the bright side, he will have great room partners this year and may be able to track through with his younger brother if he starts as true freshman.

Ok. Personally, I think it would be in his best interest to just use his redshirt if eligible second semester. I understand that he has been away from the mat for awhile and is probably eager to compete again. Best man win.

It looks like the mid majors are just the minor leagues in wrestling. Develop talent and then watch as they move on. Believe in a kid out of high school - develop him- and then watch as he leaves with no sense of loyalty to the school or program.
I know this is different since there was a coaching change at NDSU, but it sure seems like this is the case in most instances.
Maybe after the covid fallout of guys having an extra year things will get back to normal again. Then again, maybe it will get worse.
Pretty much agree. ^^ Even when Iowa benefits from the move in's...I don't like it for the sport.

Wayment...can't piss and moan when we don't get guys and then piss and moan when we do.

No strong opinion, just listing the options. I agree that Brands at 84 and Assad at 97 don't add up to a lot of NCAA points.

How do you see the lineup?

2023/2024 (Kennedy suspension maybe?)

157: Franek
165: Caliendo
174: Brands
184: Assad

2024/2025

157: Ferrari
165: PK/Caliendo
174: PK/Caliendo
184: Ferrari

Arnold may just have to sit a year.
PK, Caliendo, and Arnold will all be on the roster in 2025/2026 as well (unless Kennedy chooses to not use his Covid year). If Arnold is the odd man out, he'll be sitting 2 years.

Yes, he doesn't need to greyshirt either if he gets admitted, he'll have his regular redshirt
He hasn't started his college eligibility though, right? I thought you had to be a full-time student for it to begin.
The NCAA gives you a one-year grace for enrollment. For tennis it’s only six months. Your clock starts when you enroll or one year following your high school graduation. That applies to D1 and D2. D3 and NAIA eligibility begins at enrollment. That’s how you end up with 35 year old guys wrestling in those divisions who are not military.

Naw. Not complaining at all. Love the Caliendo pickup. Not sure I understand the Franek one though. Kennedy would have placed the exact same with the same path. I've never been a recruit-over guys. Bring in guys who over those who are not producing (Schreiver/Teske, Cobe, Assad, 197) - sure.

But I will echo the above sentiment this is good for Iowa Wrestling. These moves make for a better room, a better lineup and more points at NCAAs. So good job Tom.

I don’t like trying to assume who might be suspended, but bringing in Caliendo with PK and Brands on the roster makes me think it could be one of them.
I agree with you there. Was just commenting that the logjam with PK/MC/GA will extend to the 2025/2026 season.

Love caliendo. Have seen him a half dozen times in person and Kish loves the kid. He’s a goer.

Franek is a lighter Nelson Brands. Will bore you to death on his feet, but ends up winning

Franek has 1 year left. - will compete with Siebrecht and Ferrari (assuming he rectifies admission situation, plus Ferrari can redshirt then take control of the spot for 4 years after).
Caliendo has 3 years left. Somebody will definitely be sitting between Him/Kennedy/Brands.

2023-2024 - We'll have 3 really good wrestlers for 165/174 (Kennedy/Caliendo/Brands + Arnold Redshirting)
2024-2025 - We'll have 3 really good wrestlers for 165/174 (Kennedy/Caliendo/Arnold)
2025-2026 - We'll have 3 really good wrestlers for 165/174 (Kennedy/Caliendo/Arnold)

Good problem to have. May the best man win the spot and score us many team points at NCAA's.
Are you guys just kicking Riggens to the curb?

I could see him transferring to Purdue. They were a close second to Iowa, his younger brother is planning on going their, and he is probably good enough to be multiple year starter there. Maybe Rathjen will follow him. Would be nice to keep them, but we are stocking up on middle and upper middle weights now. Too bad he’s not big enough for 197.
