Nelson Brands to Iowa

Looks like he barely beat the kid for the state title, though clearly what he accomplished in the short time he's been wrestling at the competitive level is truly amazing (according to an article I read on him, he didn't start wrestling competitively until 3-5 years ago...is that true?). That said, do you think he will further develop in his senior year and beyond into the level of talent that can make a difference on the national stage. Just curious what those of you close to the situation think...and thank you.

Remember, Lara is no slouch (and Yant for that matter). Also, close wins and even losses in high school dont equate to limited collegiate success. DSJ took 3rd at the state tournament as a senior.

Those two final matches were against some dam good wrestlers.

Awesome news. I have a feeling he is going to turn into a hammer once he gets in the room. I don't think he cuts much weight right now, does he project at 149?

Lara is a good wrestler who hit a big move but outside of those :15 seconds that match was all Nelson Brands.

lol remember last week when someone tried to tell us Nebraska was a big threat for him and made sense?

Curious on his riding ability. Definitely a stud on his feet. Crazy how far he has risen in just a few years.

Agreed. Brands took him down at will. Without the one move, which was a counter to a Brands takedown attempt, the match wasn't that close

Well there always has to be an ass in the group so allow me to be that.

If this kid's last name wasn't Brands, we would probably be flipping out right now. Let's face it, there are plenty of Iowa kids that have two state titles behind their names. Last time I checked, he wasn't snapping necks and cashing checks at Fargo and other large tournaments. Not ranked high P4P, the list can go on a bit.

Don't get me wrong, he has some upside. But, he's not the "elite" type of kid that we Hawkeye fans have been hoping for lately. The ones that are needed to surpass our out East enemy.

Do you think we actually offered a scholarship?

Welcome Nelson. So happy that you will be a Hawkeye...Love your style and keep it better to go all out and just push the pace like your dad and uncle did.
Have a feeling might be seeing another Lewis,Ironside maybe. :)

No offense to Lara but without that cradle, he didn't do much.

When did Nelson start wrestling? Junior high? Didn't qualify for state as a freshman, & had 400+ TD's his Junior year. Two time champ. I think he's worth a shot.
Started in 6th grade. Probably ended up somewhere between 475-480 takedowns this year.

Does Iowa need to give him one since his dad is an employee of the university? I thought that was a benefit to employees of universities at least certain ones anyway as I'm not sure. Nelson brands will be a fine college wrestler lot of room to grow and gonna have great training partners and great coaches to help max out that potential

I like Nelson's upside. He's improved a ton. I remember seeing him at JR Northern Plains or something one year, and snobbishly thinking "This is a Brands?"
Then I watched him more last year, and I was eating crow. He'll pan out.

You can tighten up a kid's loose screws. You can't teach aggression. Nelson has aggression, man.

We know for a fact he wasn't offered a scholarship because coaches can't talk money until 7/1 going into their senior year.

You're right...about the ass part that is. Do you know that Nelson will actually match both Tom(1)and Terry's(2) state title total if he wins it next year? And he is doing it at tough weights. Think about TnT and all they accomplished in college and you are talking high school accolades.

Imagine if TnT were recruits now coming in weighing what they did and only having a few titles between them. Imo, Nelson has better than "some" upside. Started wrestling late, doesn't even qualify his freshman year and comes back and wins it pretty easily his sophomore year, moves up two weights and wins it again. This kid is a monster waiting to be let out of the closet...clean up his technique and he will be just fine. It's in the genes...so is the attitude.

I like his attitude on the mat...relentless. I'd rather see him go all out and lose than to play it conservatively and win 2-1. He'll keep getting better and hopefully he can live in his own shadow regardless of results.
He seems to have a great attitude about maintaining his own identity. He's clearly stated that he's "himself" rather than "Terry's son".

Of course he's proud of his dad, but he seems to have a strong sense of himself and understands that he needs to earn his own way. At the same time, he doesn't seem to feel any pressure to live up to his dad's accomplishments.

He actually seems to have fun with the fact that he's the son of an Iowa legend. In an interview at State, he was smiling about passing up Terry with 3 state titles instead of 2. I think he'll embrace his role as Terry's son and thrive at Iowa.

By the way, I think Terry deserves some credit for Nelson's positive attitude. By holding him out of competitive wrestling until relatively late, he helped Nelson keep the sport in perspective and ensure that he only wrestled because he loved the sport -- not because he felt he had to do it.

Yes, Pedigree counts for something. Has some upside?? Did you just want to be that guy?? We know what he has done in the last few years and we understand the work ethic he was raised with. That is why we can be excited!

Since when is getting a talented, aggressive, hardworking kid who probably won eat up any ship $ in the Iowa room ever a bad thing? This commitment does change that fact that Iowa is still going after hammers from all over the country. Sasso is still very much in play!

Teasdale (still praying/begging for solid solid commitment) - multiple national champ in my humble opinion

Brands - hammer with huge up side

Sasso - yes please!

Looks to be a fine class. Probably need an 84er and we're set?!

Also Chief congrats to beating me to the punch on the thread:). We must of been typing at the same exact time.

Agreed.

It may not be all that impressive about where he is ranked right now, but the trajectory he is on is impressive. His redshirt freshman year starts in 2 1/2 years. I think with his work ethic, aggressiveness and pedigree, we will be pretty happy where he is at by then. Is he the recruit that KemDawg, the Bull, Lee or Teasdale is at this point? No. Does he have the potential to be an awfully good D1 wrestler? You bet.

I think there were some other Brands boys who were only 2 time state champs. Anyone recall
