Nelson Brands

Saw him wrestle at the Dvorak Invitation in December, he defeated Andrew Merholz, Senior, Deerfield High School at 138 lbs. (5-2). Merholz has been an outstanding wrestler in Illinois for four years, a very tough and dangerous wrestler, currently rated #4 in Illinois with only losses to top rated opponents, Merholz very athletic. Brands very young, and was very cautious against Merholz. Brands was defeated in the finals by Montini Sophomore wrestler Will Lewan (3-2), currently #3 in Illinois. Again very tactical match with limited action. Brands, big upside, but still young.

Definitely some wrestling history at 138. You guys all nailed down the relationships. Brands had to beat Stricher to make the finals. For him to beat Lembeck in the Championship match is pretty good. Lembeck has been pretty untouchable on this side of the State this year. I've gotten was watch Nelson wrestle several times. Tough kid. Will be interested to see his run to State this year. Qualified last year, but did not place.

Brands finished 4th in a tough district last season and did not qualify for state.

The crazy thing is Brands was the MVC champion last year, defeating eventual 3rd place finisher 12-7 in the conference finals. He then had eventual state runner-up Skylar DeJong in the semifinals of his district bracket and never came back from that loss.

My guess is the second your kids get out of the house they quit wrestling.

They can quit now if they want. I have two that want to wrestle every night all year. They don't, but they try. I have one that just goes twice a week just to do something in the winter. He wrestles about four tourneys a year when the team needs points. He was probably the best, but he's a soccer player first. The other one thought he wanted to play basketball, changed his mind and is wrestling two nights a week and does probably a dozen tournaments a year. I know I BS a lot about my kids, but I don't know how I became the pushing father. It's the total opposite. It's not like I like running to baseball, soccer, football and wrestling all year or paying for it. We volunteer for track and run tables and we see the kids getting pushed. Never push a kid out there to get stomped who doesn't want to wrestle. Wrestling is a personal individual sport and that's the way it is here. It's their choice.

I wasn't serious about Nelson, obviously a Hawkeye. Nothing wrong with the Peacocks either, one of our coaches went to Upper Iowa and is one of the best youth coaches in the state.

My oldest is in seven grade, so he and Nelson obviously will not wrestle until Olympic trials someday.

Nelson better start the move up right away then.

From what I've been told the best time to move up is when your predicted to win the Olympic trials at your weight and then two months before the trials you decide to gain 22 lbs and try to take out out one of the best p4p wrestlers on the planet.

Haha...saw that one. Welp, Metcalf did beat him about 8 years ago. Should be no sweat ;)

Haha I was hoping someone would get me. I need some humor here. There's not a drop of snow on the ground and businesses and schools are already closed tomorrow. It's supposed to be the real deal storm.

Yes same here still not any snow but school already canceled for tomorrow. Let it snow now hold off first week in March so can make it to Iowa City for big tens which will be as good as nationals this year.

I'm not *****ing at all I just found it very amusing. I apologize for poking fun but that was one one of the better ones I've heard. It's kind of like when Michael Jordan decided to play baseball in his prime.

I'm related to a whole bunch of Danish people.
