Compared to just being garbage all year?
Alford had his flaws but he shined in the post season his team's always came to play this time of year.

Alford needed the Big 10 tournament to make the NCAA tournament.
Lol so we're just ignoring Alford's epic B10 tournament runs now? Bet you really enjoy Frans yearly first game flameouts instead. Iowa was a clutch tournament team under Alford.

You must have forgotten the Lousiana Tech State whatever loss...that was far & away the worse.
I prefer coaches that win enough games that get into the tournament without having to win 4 games in 4 days.

I could care less about the Conf Tournament. We're already in the NCAAs, the only thing that matters is our seed there. In that sense only, does the BTT matter.
Who cares about those Conf Tournament Titles (aside from ISU)? Hanging a BTT tournament title banner in Carver is only supplemental to a Conf Champ/Good NCAA showing. What sucks about today is that it affects our ability to improve our seed, and the Hawks are spiraling into abysmal performances.

Well don't worry, with Fran we don't even have to worry about winning A game in the BTT.
And I'm sure if Alford had Gesell at pg he wouldn't have defended him, but Pierce was damn good. But him on that three seed team and that's a Final Four type squad.
I'd much rather win the BTT and then lose in the first round of the NCAA than, lose in the first round of the BTT and win just 1 game in the NCAA.

People talk about teams that got hot for 4 days and ignore the teams that did it for 4 months.
To me regular season and what you do in the NCAA's is what matters. I would trade winning 4 games in the NCAA's ONCE for half a dozen BTT championships.

I think everyone knows my subject title is tongue-in-cheek, but one thing Alford did was had this team prepared for the BTT more often than not. For crying out loud, in Alford's 8 seasons Iowa won 13 BTT games; in the other 11 years of the Tourney's history, Iowa has won only 2 games.
It seems that every year I really look forward to the BTT, and for three straight years now the experience has been gut-wrenching.

Big Ten 6th place or higher: Alford 4, Fran 4
NCAA appearances: Alford 3, Fran (about to be 3)
NCAA Tourney wins: Alford 1, Fran 1
BTT record: Alford 13-6 (2 titles), Fran 2-6
I only see one glaring difference in these resumes. The only thing Fran has done that Alford hasn't is made a deep NIT run, and that's not exactly something to brag about.
I like Fran as a person more than I like Alford just like everyone else. But c'mon, your "garbage all year" argument doesn't hold water.
