Having Tom, Terry, and Metcalf all on the staff is whole lot of redundancy. I'd rather we prioritize mat wrestling. I got no problem with Metcalf landing this gig. A strong ISU program will push us - and that's good.
Iowa staff > ISU staff. Congrats to ISU on their new hires and I hope this turns into a rivalry again, but I think our staff is way better.
I agree, the problem is there are a handful of other programs that have not only pushed us...but surpassed us....Dresser making ISU into a powerhouse in a state that already has 2 other D-1 programs fighting over a very small wrestling population.
Way better? I think we can debate this now...
Boy I really hope so!Do you think all of the waves they are making in Ames currently (Highest paid coaching staff, bringing in all Ex-Hawks, massive fundraising..) will have any effect on the Iowa program? By that I mean do you think the University Foundation or whoever decides to get serious about endowing the HWC, and competing with the checkbook instead of resting on the laurels of the program?
As much as I hate to admit it, ISU looks like they have a ton of momentum right now, and PSU and tOSU have already had this administrative support for years now.
I just don't want Iowa to get left behind in this RTC, Fundraising arms race.
Ok, why would he take a volunteer job over a paying job at the OTC? Any way we can add to the coaching staff as it currently is to add riding and help 157-184?Boy I really hope so!

PicWhen I told my wife that Metcalf is going to Ames, she said "WHAT? That is like Favre going to the Vikings!!! This is awful."
Pretty much this. Sucks that they have Metcalf, but them have Zaddick and DSJ doesn't really make me quake in my boots. Pretty much the same staff he had at Vtech with the exception of Robie/Metcalf.I'm not going to get too worked up about it. If they really wanted Zadick here he would be here still. I'll take our lower weight guys all day still. Metcalf obviously was not going to be here anyway for whatever reason (mainly no spot open it seems). Like Goblin said money talks. If anything this should give our admin a wake up call to get out the check book. Metcalf has been in our room, not as official coach but in our room.

Everyone knows Metcalf is awesome, and definitely has an incredible resume, but that doesn't automatically make him a great coach. I absolutely guarantee that ISU will not pass Iowa by.

It is going to be difficult...
Zadick is an incredible recruiter and relates well with the kids.
Heck his beard is a great recruiter!
It will be difficult now to pick a team even though I am a UNI alumnus.
All three schools now led by Gable protégés.
Wow!
Based on college placement, but nothing tangible from a coaching perspective. I guess time will tellMetcalf/DSJ > M*/Berhow
Step 1: be a good recruiter (Being Brent Metcalf is name recognition by the likes very few can surpass with current HS kids)
Step 2: be a good coach (see step 1)
this is not good
This is a valid point. His current position is a little more formal, and we'll see what type of salesman he is. As a volunteer assistant, he is not permitted to make recruiting trips or in home visits.Meh....I won't be losing any sleep tonight over the recent ISU hires. It's not like a lot of top recruits were rushing to Iowa to train with him, when he was wrestling for the HWC the past 5 or so years.

Brent is essentially in the same position that Berhow is for us. The problem is that if we replace Berhow with Brent, we wouldn't have a coach above 165 lbs. We'd have to replace M* as well to get some coaching balance, and that would be putting a lot of faith in a guy that hasn't shown he can recruit or coach (Metcalf). It would also really hurt us in the short term with recruits that have a relationship with M*Could we have offered Brent the HWC coaching spot and have Terry just be the associate head coach to Tom?
If the HWC was not ham strung by the U of I in regards to making a lot of money we could have.Could we have offered Brent the HWC coaching spot and have Terry just be the associate head coach to Tom?
What does Berhow bring to the table beside a beard ? Our upper weights still stink like they always have since Mocco. Time for some new exciting blood !!
I'm not sure if this post is serious. Stoll made huge leaps before getting injured, which can't be blamed on Ben. Burak got better every single year and was a 3x AA. Ben also coached a guy named Tony Nelson to a couple of championships. What does Berhow bring to the table beside a beard ? Our upper weights still stink like they always have since Mocco. I don't disagree. Simply stating that the decision isn't as cut and dry as many would like to make it seem. A lot of factors and moving parts.Give Metcalf a couple years under Dresser's leadership and I think he will do quite fine
with both recruiting and coaching. The future is definitely looking better for ISU with this coaching staff.

As others have pointed out he will get his money from the RTC gig.Ok, why would he take a volunteer job over a paying job at the OTC? Any way we can add to the coaching staff as it currently is to add riding and help 157-184?
You are the same guy that said our coaches are better than Iowa States. Tom and Terry coach the little guys, 25-41. M* coaches 49-84 and Berhow coaches the big boys. Zadick is a great coach but not on Tom or Terry's level. That is the only spot our Hawks win. Metcalf is head and shoulders above M* and StJohn had a far better career. They will coach 49-84. Huge advantage clowns. Dresser is ISU'S big coach, he is better than Ben and has proven to be a great developer of talent. We need some new blood.
The same Tony Nelson that EVERY SINGLE hawk fan complained about being the most boring wrestler in the country. Nelson was one of the strongest guys in the country, that is why he won 2 titles, not because he was a dynamic wrestler.

dynamic? No, but being strong doesn't alone win you two titles. You're head is in the sand if you don't think Berhow is a good upperweight coach.
What are you doing to help the cause? I hope that anyone complaining is also an active donor to the HWC. Not that I'm a fan of complaining, but if you're just sitting on your hands and complaining, it's all the more unseemly. The past few years just makes me smh at Iowas head in the sand approach. TnT and Iowa administrations lack of forward thinking is really tiresome. It seems TnT has been a 2-3 steps behind other top programs some time
Continued future of Iowa is a top 3-5 program.
