Im interested to see what they do on the D line. With the way Ekakitie finished up the year, there's no doubt hes one of the best 4. The problem is he, JJ and Bazata seem like 100% interior lineman and not sure if any of those guys are capable of sliding out.

Yeah, early in his career, they tried to get Ekakitie to work on the outside too. However, for whatever reason, he always seemed more comfortable at DT.

Keeping Ekakite on the inside is the right move. Both Bazata and Johnson wore down significantly late in the year due to high snap counts. Bazata admitted as much in the interviews that Morehouse and Dochterman had in a podcast a few weeks ago. I would envision a scenario where Johnson, Bazata and Ekakite are all playing between 60 and 80 percent of the snaps, rather than Johnson and Bazata both playing 90+ percent of the snaps.

Didn't realize how many Iowa kids are in the 2 deeps. Most of them from small towns as well. Seems like most of Iowa's high school athletes in fball &bball have been from small towns over the years.

I agree. Being able to rotate 3 quality players on the inside is a nice luxury

So glad to hear McCarron has the necessary speed to return kicks.

We are one twisted ankle away from Sam Brinks being our starting defensive end? No offense to the guy, but who the heck is he, and what has been going on with our DE recruiting? All 4 guys on the DE are freshmen and sophs? That is a position of major need, as we struggled to put pressure on the QB last yr. Let's call a spade a spade...someone dropped the ball there. MAJORLY. Maybe they were expecting Ott to be back?

I like seeing that Jay Scheel has caught Smith and they are neck and neck for starter. Scheel has the it factor, and I've never been sold on Smith's hands or mental game. I'm sure that will develop as he matures.

A lot of youth on the OL. One senior on the two deeps. That is promising for the future. They still seem light compared to other schools OLs. Most have their big boys in the 315 range. Our guys hover around 295-300.

Waechter had zero D1 offers other than Iowa coming out of hs, and is already on the 2 deeps on OL University's OL as a freshmen? That's quite a rapid rise. The kid must have a serious work ethic...and he's already put on 30 lbs in the program. Another nice find by coach Morgan.

I would love to see the RB position up for grabs, rather than Wadley behind Daniels. From what they have done on the field, Wadley has earned starter role.

None of the 6 LBs on the two deeps are seniors? That seems a little odd. One is a freshmen, in Garbutt. The kid had offers from Nebraska and Missouri. Could be a true stud in waiting. Keep an eye on him.

Also, where is the senior transfer punter that came here solely to be our starting punter? He's not even on the two deeps.

No one is going to point out the Jerminic Smith OR Jay Scheel notation at SE? Or is that a "landed on the moon thing" that I missed?

No one should be surprised with that. Kennedy, Davis, and Ferentz all had positive things to say about Scheel during Spring practice, and Jay made a couple of the bigger plays in the Spring game. If he stays injury free during Fall camp, I think he has a very good chance to start game one.

Lots of letterwinners on offense.

Decent amount on the defensive side too but a veteran offense could click nicely if some passcatchers emerge.

You first draw this conclusion regarding DEs:

All 4 guys on the DE are freshmen and sophs? ......Let's call a spade a spade...someone dropped the ball there. MAJORLY. Maybe they were expecting Ott to be back?

and then state this in the next paragraph:

A lot of youth on the OL. One senior on the two deeps. That is promising for the future.

Are you bi-polar? Youth at DE sucks but youth at OL is promising.

Also, because you are probably are unaware, most of those DE's used redshirts.

I was thinking the same thing. Lots and lots of home grown talent it appears.

Typically the teams that run a zone blocking scheme feature smaller OL. I don't think it is anything to be too concerned about.

Uhh, I guess you don't have to have an education to post 9,000 times on a message board. Do you have any idea what bipolar means? The OL starts a senior and three juniors and has youth as depth. That is promising. The DEs are are all freshmen and sophs. What don't you get? Get your community college degree then come back if you want to have a real discussion.

Good lord, you're still around spewing your negativity. I was hoping you left and became an ISU or UNI "fan".

Does McCarron have the necessary speed to return kicks? This has me hoping and thinking that this spot will be up for grabs in camp.
Did Tim Dwight have the necessary speed? Not saying he is TD but he is fast. Dont judge a book by the cover.

Wow a lot to digest there.

1) Attrition happens. Had Ott gotten a 5th year it would have helped. My guess is if either M. Nelson or Hesse went down A. Nelson would be next guy in regardless of side. A true freshman or 2 will have an opportunity to get on the field. Generally at Iowa, you have position groups that can absorb injuries a lot better than others. DE would be one group where it would be good if the starters were able to play.
2) I hope Scheel is awesome, but we've seen absolutely zero to say that he has "it" whatever that is. He played 3 snaps in his college career. J. Smith has all the tools, he has actually gone for over 100 yards in a game against a B1G opponent in his career. Between Smith and Scheel, likely 2 good players there.
3) Agree on Waechter. Iowa has a long track record of turning guys with good frames and agility, putting weight on them and having them be good to very good.
4) Wadley and Daniels will both play a lot, barring injury. Who starts really means very little. Wadley has the most natural talent of any RB on the roster.
5) LB's. Iowa replaced 3 starters in 2013, had a senior in 2014 in Alston and a senior last year in Fisher. Agree on Garbutt.
6) The punter hasn't had a chance to punt at all yet in any sort of competitive setting. Let's see what the 2-deep looks like halfway through camp or when the games start.

I'm a little concerned about him turning the ball over due to being undersized. He almost cost us dearly last year but we recovered it (can't remember the game, maybe Nebby).

IowaLaw guy, there is no perfect layout of players in college football. We don't have 105 schollies anymore, where you can get a progression of Senior to Junior to Sophomore depth chart. Just doesn't work that way. There is drop outs, flunk outs, and injuries to the depth chart. Informed fans should not be shocked that we have underclassmen in the lineup. Some players progress faster than others. Some leave early, some never develop. It happens.

Let's call a spade an - annoying, negative, droning, blatherskite of an iowalaw spade.

From Psycom.net: "If you are living with bipolar disorder, you may feel energetic, abnormally happy, and make reckless decisions during manic states. During depressive states, you may feel the overwhelming urge to cry, experience feelings of hopelessness, and have a negative outlook on life." So I would say this fits your crap pretty accurately. Take last years 12-0 record (mostly without Ott) and suck on it. As far as degrees - everytime you post you are an embarrassment to Iowa Law (but I seriously doubt you even went to Iowa)

It will be interesting to see how the depth at DE shakes out. If folks remember years ago ... Jason White was listed as the #2 RB for 2 straight years ... however, that wasn't necessarily an indicator that he'd be the first RB in if the starter got injured. If anything, it was acknowledgement from the coaches that they appreciated what he was doing in practice.

If a starting DE were to go down, I'd anticipate that Anthony Nelson would step into the void.

However, with that said, the DE situation reminds me a little of how the '07 DE situation looked like, albeit with less experienced starters. Back then, we had to rely on a RS FR (Clayborn) and a TR FR (Ballard) to supply depth to the two starting DEs.

I remember when some unknown walk-on linebacker named Clark became a tight end. There was also this unknown tight end who moved to OT by the name of Gallery. Anyone remember how that turned out?

When it comes to Iowa's RBs, I love Wadley. I appreciate Daniels. But Derick Mitchell should not be overlooked. The kid is big, strong, fast and has good hands. Mitchell should play a lot, and if he does, he will be a joy to behold.

Gotta get Mitchell focused instead of stomping around celebrating after every 12 yd. run. He could be one our greatest backs ever. I agree with his potential! I'd like to see events transpire that put him in a position to take college football by storm. Heiz sleeper.

This year will be the weakest our DE spot will be for years to come. All these guys are going to have a long career ahead of them. Throw AJ/Lattimore into the mix and the DE position is set for a while. Just hope it won't be too big of a weakness this year and they stay healthy

o_O:confused:

I think depth is always a concern but I'm not sure why some are so worried about the defensive line, particularly the ends. Nelson and Hesse both got significant playing time last year and I didn't feel either one was a glaring weakness.

Of course, after watching the LBs struggle during the 2014 season, "glaring weakness" is a relative term for me.

Mitchell reminds me a little of Ronnie Harmon, I too think he could be really good. We are stacked at rb no doubt.

I also was curious about the grad transfer punter from Central Michigan.
Was he here for the spring semester? I wonder if it's just because he's brand new and hasn't gone through fall camp yet. If he doesn't fill either punting or kicking, I guess that's probably a good sign for the future...

Hesse is bigger and stronger than last year. The kid played very well for a redshirt freshman. Without his TD interception we lose to Nebraska. Our DE play will be fine.

We win with or without his TD. We were just a much better team than Neb last year. Don't forget that was their Superbowl. They weren't planning on a bowl game if they lost that one. We still handled them playing extremely conservative.
