New vids from the Flo visit dropping

I would agree with this 100%. He hasn't been able to get a ton of matches in, but he just seems to be getting better. Maybe it's just my gut, but if nothing else he's a great backup to have available, and I would put him in before Brands too and let the chips fall where they may.

I want that Nelson Brands experience as an undersized 184 to come to an end. He can attempt to wreak havoc on the 174 lbers when Kem is gone, if he has it in him to do so (and Kennedy isn't in the way). He can get better in a lot of position's, and he'll probably need to if he wants to place fairly high at NCAA's and be a reliable point scorer there too.

Nelson has a lot of guts and "want to" to him, I hope he's able to put it all together at some point and he's a real force, just not sure it's in the cards. I guess we'll see.
Love ya Sloe so not being argumentative at all, but what has Nelson shown for you not to be confident in his technique or athleticism along with his guts and want to?

completely agree. the glass half full way of looking at 184 is that at the very least we have a guy who's won a match at ncaas in Brands and potential upside with two others. good depth. And Nelson certifying under 184 means he provides good depth at 2 weights. wouldn't be surprised to see him get matches at 174 this year to keep kemerer fresh.

*what he hasn't shown*

a consistent leg attack against top 15 guys. he scored 3 points or less in 50% of his matches last year (plus a 15-4 loss where he got taken down enough to break that mark with escapes).

a good case to be made that size has a lot to do with that. he doesn't want to get stuck under bigger guys. but to be a top 5 guy, you have to be able to score on things other than go behinds. i hope we get a chance to see him at 165/174.

That's why he's intriguing. He's barely wrestled any folkstyle and has good freestyle wins. We've had 2 years of Nelson wrestling full folkstyle seasons at 184. I think we have a pretty good idea what he is. We don't know what Wilson is. Could be better, could be worse. Imo, if the starter isn't Assad or Wilson, we shouldn't expect points out of 184.

I’m also intrigued or a fan of Wilson. But the comment was pedigree, not intrigue.

Well let me start by saying nobody is offering me a major College Coaching position, so this is my cheap seats viewpoint! 🙂

I just think he's got limited mat skills, especially from the top position. And he seems to get himself in some bad predicaments that he's unable to get out of on his feet at times, kind of an awareness type of thing. Likely the size differential is a big part of that, he just gets horsed by bigger guys that take his quickness advantage away, and that ultimately wears him down to boot.

I kind of envision him with the potential to be a bigger DeSanto, if we got to watch him more often against guys his own size now that he's been around for a bit in College. He just lacks that overall "slickness" IMO, especially the kind that leads to more back points (I'm not so sure DeSanto is all that great on top either, but he wears people down and just imposes his will, pretty effectively for the most part). Those are the guys that finish higher on the podium and are a bit more dangerous (not that those guys grow on trees, but we need every point we can get and IMO Nelson Brands is not that guy @ 184).

Abe Assad has far more potential, willingness, and size in the danger department IMO. If he's healthy again, I want to see what he's capable of after being pulled out of redshirt in his first go round, with somewhat mixed results (22-7 or so? - not great but not bad).

Can PK make 165?
For what we know 165 is where PK will be. Tom Brands just stated in the press conference for the Okie st meet, the lineup is not set and some his young guns could make a statement this year, so who knows. I would imagine 184 is the only weight really in question, but this really raises eyebrows.

We need strong statements from young guns.

My feeling is our next guys in line will be getting their time to shine starting this year. I think most of our starters will not wrestle every match, almost a as needed transition year.
Well, that would suck. Lol Something backwards in busting a hump in practice and sitting out real competition to stay fresh.

I want to see bone fide statements of ownership out of the youngsters.

Yeah I get ya and let me retract and say the weights I’m referring to are 125,157,165 and 174 not most of our starters

Raises whose eyebrows? There are 2 spots up for grabs, and unless you consider Assad a young gun (I don't, but I suppose he could be), there aren't going to be any young guns in the lineup on a regular basis IMO (some spot duty is likely, even though that's what Opens are for). You've got the horses, let them run.

149 is up for grabs with Murin and Turk, and 184. I think it will be Murin and Assad.

Do you think redshirts will be burned to give starters an off day?
absolutely not.

cashman can jump in lee and or desanto
bennett can jump in for eierman
turk can jump in for murnin
joe kelly or reyna can fill in at 157 165
brands/wilson can fill in at 174/184
glazier at 197
costello at 285

no reason to burn shirts when we have capable guys to fill a spot for a night.

Precisely why what Tom says raises eyebrows, even Coach Smith made comment about it.

Dude. So Smith is scouting Ayala and Kennedy and Schreiver? Yeah, I'm thinking not. But if his eyebrow got raised, well Okie Dokie.

Tom says a lot of things. That's what Coaches do at press conferences. I guess its up to the individual about how to take certain comments. Sometimes you have to sift thru the bullshit and not take it as gospel truth.

Like Wrestling The Universe or such things.

Yes I’m reading way to much into it but the season has not started yet and I have nothing else to talk about. I still think we see a bit different approach to this season.

Agree with the above, however, would be shocked to see Reyna. Fully expect him to redshirt this year along with all of last season's freshman.

I think your heart is in the right place young man, but not everything has some hidden message attached. Every season is a new season, the drama will provide itself once it starts.........

Most of these guys have been on the shelf enough in the last couple of years that I don’t understand the theory of “half a$$ing,” it through this season.

Brands has had a bit of a pattern. Start the year like gang busters getting a big win over a ranked guy or two but seems to fade some as the year goes on. Closer matches and a lot of problems competing with big muscular full sized 184 pounders. I think he catches some guys early not being in peak form yet and wears down. Not being a full sized 184 is the main issue and I see a ceiling of low AA because of it.
Yes he wrecked venz then couldn’t beat him again. Brands shows up in great shape or just stays ready.

The Abe, Myles, or Nelson question at 184 is interesting. I imagine we’ll certainly get a look at all 3 and it could be settled like it was a couple years ago when Abe made the finals at Midlands. He got the spot, then Brands took it over when Abe struggled. Unless there is an injury, I don’t really see Myles Wilson as an option. I like his fight and he’s got some grit, but he seems to lose cause guys are flat out better than him talent wise. Abe and Nelson have the same grit, but they also have more God given talent.

The last time we saw Abe Assad in College Wrestling he was the 11 seed as a True Freshman at a canceled NCAA's.
Since then his absence has been cloaked in Hawkeye injury mystery.

If Brands is going to do anything he needs to pick up the pace like he had in high school and when he first got to Iowa. He’s becoming like Sorensen now, waiting around for his “go to” and last second wins. Not saying if he was like Sorensen would be a bad thing, but he’s not as good obviously. So pick it up and be an animal like his genetics want him to be.

I agree. I am mystified at what happened to him. His first few matches in a Hawkeye singlet he was a non-stop attack machine. Then all of a sudden he quit, and can go seven minutes without committing to a single shot.

I think someone posted that since he’s wrestling up or just small for the weight he has to be more tight. Maybe not. Either way let the fur fly, that’s his thing or it was.

Edit: I don’t care if he loses, I do a little of course, but I was looking forward to that crazy pace for a couple years.

???

Nelson has never been a non-stop attacking machine, at least as a starter. His first big win was a 4-3 double OT tie breaker against Colbray when he scored a go behind to win. He lost his next match to an unranked guy. If you're talking about matches his true freshman year, then the answer is easy. He wasn't wrestling anybody good.

Yur dumb and haven’t followed him long enough. Delete your dumbass post.

In that match he fully captured a leg at least four times but couldn’t finish. He also had several fully-committed shots that were blocked. That was my point - he attacked.

He will have that and finish shots at his normal weight next year.
