New vids from the Flo visit dropping

Really? Wasn’t that long ago. 2019, Abe made the finals at Midlands, then Brands (Tom) pulled his (Abe’s)shirt. He had some struggles and we saw Nelson get the start in a couple dual meets with limited success (1-1 at Carver and 2-2 overall). Abe got the spot back and then the world came to an end. Don’t beat yourself up about it Spoonie, the pandemic creates a lot of obtuseness.

Yur dumb and haven’t followed him long enough. Delete your dumbass post.
"why can't this guy rack up takedowns in college the way he did against iowa high schoolers???"

i've followed Nelson since he was a sophomore in high school. he's never been an attacking machine in college. sorry. nobody would talk about him like this if his name wasn't brands. he's good, not great.

In that match he fully captured a leg at least four times but couldn’t finish. He also had several fully-committed shots that were blocked. That was my point - he attacked.
maybe we have a different idea of what an attacking machine looks like. 5-7 shots over the course of 7 minutes doesn't meet mine.

This never happened.

Assad ripped off 4 straight B1G wins after Midlands including wins over Venz and Rocky Jordan. He then lost to Aaron Brooks and a close one to our guy Cam Caffey. No shame in either loss. Then he had a minor injury so to get him healthy before B1Gs, Wilcke went against Michigan and Minnesota and Brands against Okie State. That was Brands’ first varsity action since before Midlands.

Don’t beat yourself up, my friend.

The one that "struggled" was what appeared to be a perfectly capable Cashe Wilcke. Had he not we wouldn't be having this conversation (especially since Assad was MIA last year).

Abe Assad has to get and stay healthy first and foremost, then we'll see what he's got. At this point he seems to be a low AA type at best, but his bonus ceiling is higher IMO (which admittedly may not be much).

184 and 149 will remain a conundrum until somebody breaks thru and actually makes some noise at NCAA's. Hopefully this is that year.

Well, I would say in that match he took eight shots in the five minutes they were on their feet in regulation. Which is a lot for 184. And it’s about eight more than he typically takes these days.

Raises whose eyebrows? There are 2 spots up for grabs, and unless you consider Assad a young gun (I don't, but I suppose he could be), there aren't going to be any young guns in the lineup on a regular basis IMO (some spot duty is likely, even though that's what Opens are for). You've got the horses, let them run.

149 is up for grabs with Murin and Turk, and 184. I think it will be Murin and Assad.
I'm definitely of the same mind. Looking forward to seeing AA out there this year. Wouldn't it be fortuitous if NB stubbed his toe, or had one of those vicious season-ending hang nails? dumb.....I know...

I've got no issues with Nelson Brands toughness, grit, or ability. He's a legit All-American type DI wrestler IMO, he's just not a 184 lber., thru no fault of his own. I've always had an issue with undersized guys in Iowa's lineup no matter who it is, for what should be obvious reasons. But even at a place like Iowa it happens on occasion. It's a testament to him he's able to hang at 184 as well as he does.

I concur doctor! It's too bad he doesn't have a redshirt still left to burn, eh?

Agree with the above, however, would be shocked to see Reyna. Fully expect him to redshirt this year along with all of last season's freshman.
Ah ya that would be right, i was thinking that Reyna has been in the program longer than just last year.

are they going to continue the extra matches? I liked the idea and awesome to see some of the young bucks scrap before the dual.
i've heard mixed things about this. it might be more common outside of the big ten. the big ten has travel limit rules that effect how many guys you can bring that were waived last year, but back in effect now.

Why does the B1G concern itself with the number of athletes allowed on a trip, specifically for wrestling?

Given the widespread return of open tournaments, I'm thinking they will eliminate them. However, it would be nice to have at least a couple exhibition matches if the teams are interested.

The coaches need to push the NCAA to implement something similar to what they rolled out in football. A player can play in up to 4 games and still redshirt that year. It would certainly help with forfeits for squads that are not as deep. Not to mention, I would love to see Ayala get a couple of cracks in dual meets while still maintaining his redshirt.

Why even worry about # of meets/matches? Just say they have 5 years to compete in 4 postseasons. Whichever comes first makes their eligibility run out and a 6th year can be given to special circumstances.

And that 6th year will potentially be abused. However, the common practice of keeping freshmen on the shelf means they don’t have a redshirt to use when they need one for injuries.

They wrestle so few total duals as it is. I don’t see this as interesting or a good idea but to each his own.

Redshirts are an unnecessary complication in college sports. Make it 5 years to compete. Do away with all redshirts. So simple.

That was my point. There are no redshirts you can compete in 5 seasons, but only get 4 postseasons to compete in. So if you go 4 straight you are done in 4, but if you get injured or beat out 1 year you don’t lose eligibility. And it keeps the same number of postseasons since they allowed freshmen to compete. We are saying the same thing I think.

Sort of. But why the complication of 4 postseasons? Seems arbitrary. Make it easy.

I guess just because that’s how it’s been my entire lifetime (minus the people that are getting 5 from the covid debacle)

But before that one could only wrestle 3 years as there were no redshirts. Still a thing in the early 70s (Gable). We went to 4 soon after and everyone lived.
