One thing I'm excited about for tomorrow is the possibility for the offense to expand its game.

I think tomorrow could be Brandon Smith's big day. He'll be defended by an inexperienced player. I'm thinking we might get someone else besides Stanley throwing him a pass. Maybe ISM on a sweep option, or a TE on an end-around. Or, maybe instead of him blocking for Easley on the perimeter, he releases as Easley catches that routine lateral pass. Then Easley lobs the ball over the corner for an easy completion to Smith with room to run.

I'll be there anticipating something non-vanilla, in a game everyone seems to think will be all ground and pound.

Am I delusional?

hopefully not. would like to see more exotics.

In that vein, I am sure glad that the Greg Davis days are over. GD probably though "hook and ladder" was something a carpenter does. If you mentioned naked reverse to GD, he probably thought you were talking about something that goes on in a strip joint.

my point being, at least there is some improvement in the offense in the post-GD era.

I'm delusional :)

I've been thinking all week that we should come out with a play action pass deep first play. I've never seen KF do that so it would be unexpected. With how Wisconsin played last week I think they'd all attack the LOS on the PA. Get Smith or Fant deep.

Nah...zone stretch to the short side of the field.

I think when you are not close to a team trickery may bridge the gap. Our current situations is that we can beat them without. Trickery will happen in the 4th if we are down.

If you are expecting exotics you are the weakest link.

This should be a very close slugfest and I expect Kirks DNA will rule the day. Of course I could be wrong.

First play, I'd like to see Stanley fake the hand off to the RB on the short side zone stretch (to suck up the Badger LBs) and then roll out the other way and find a receiver downfield.

More than anything else I want Iowa to pull off a fake punt for a long gainer that ends up breaking the back of Wisconsin's hope of winning. Payback!

Actually, Rastetter appeared to have plenty of room to run on a some of those rollout punts in a couple games already this year. Do it!
Well, at least I am not the only one whose craw that fake punk sticks. ;)

What about Brian's DNA?

On 4th & 3 at the Ohio State 20, Colten Rastetter completed a 18 yard pass to long snapper Tyler Kluver in a formation which spread 6 players, 3 to each sideline, against the OSU defense. Iowa scored a TD on the next play.

Earlier last season, Rastetter completed a pass to reserve DE AJ Epenesa on 4th & 8 for a first down against Michigan State.

Haven't seen anything exotic yet this year but Brian appears to have a loose chromosome.

Remember what happened last year when Rastetter took off on a run from punt formation? UUUGGLLY

Wasn't that a bad snap / broken play? I can't remember. Right now, Colten Rastetter is one of the successful passers in Iowa football history.:D

Considering a couple times in the off-season KF has mentioned they didn't stick with the run enough on 2nd down last year in Madison, I wouldn't count on it.

To me, the best exotic we can hope for is for Stanley to be sharp tomorrow which opens up the playbook an awful lot more. It's funny what happens when a defense has to cover both the run and the pass every play.

The best thing that can occur tomorrow evening with the offense is to "stay on schedule" with down and distance.

No, I think Colton just thought he saw a lane for the first down and then he had a quick one-sided conversation with Coach Ferentz

OK that's right, I do recall that sideline chat. I would like to see them spring it at the right time when everyone is on the same page.

Pretty close to UNI game, except he rolled to wide side & hit TJ.

Just want to see some shots at the endzone when the chance is there. The ISU game was so frustrating in that regard. Get a big turnover and make them pay (see OSU 2017).

We're gonna hand off to the running back, and the quarterback is gonna roll out, no, the quarterback fakes the handoff and then he rolls out, no......he thinks about faking....he wants to fake...................I don't know where I am.

I was worried with Wisconsin coming in off a loss but seeing Iowa as a home dog restored the thought process. Hawks by 3.

Love to see a flea-flicker on the Hawkeyes' first offensive play. Wisky ready to stuff the run and....ooops...touchdown Iowa! Why not?

And on that 4th quarter fake punt vs. OSU, Rastetter was about one step away from a first down. Had the rest of the team known he was going to do it, he might have scored on it. The kid has some speed, especially for a punter. And yes, pulling off a fake punt against Bucky would be beyond awesome. As some have mentioned, I don't think anyone will ever forget Wisky's fake that not only led to its one-point win but set the two teams on different paths. It's time to reverse things on what will be a picture-perfect night for football.

On the Rastetter OSU fake punt, there's ONE tOSU player who sees what's happening, and he runs about 40 yards straight across the field, passing numerous Iowa players who don't lay a hand on him, and he makes the tackle. Otherwise Rastetter gets about 30 yards. If even one Iowa guy chips him, or knocks him down, Rastetter is a Hawkeye legend. Ah, so close....

Some plays I think we'll see:

A fake Jet Sweep--before we run a real one.

Throwback pass to the TE.

A jailbreak screen. It will not hit.

That neat toss-pitch counter to the RB deep in the backfield. I friggin' love this play, and it almost always hits.

A pass to the FB.

One reverse--but again, faked first before a real one.

Otherwise, doubt we see any true exotics today.

Had Colten Rastetter picked up that first down on the ill advised tOSU fake punt attempt, he would have been a Hero with Hawk fans. However, you know it wasn't called by Kirk by the ass chewing he received, so even had it been successful, Kirk still wouldn't have been pleased.
"What are you doing? The f*** are you doing?" - Kirk Ferentz

rofl lmao ensues.................

Those calls (and play designs) were Woods´, which got the greenlight by KF, I believe. I dont think BF had anything to do with them. ST were very successful in running exotics last year, FWIW. Not saying Woods made the plays up completely out of thin air, but he did choose the base plays from a variety of sources, and modified them to suit the team´s needs.

From the ST perspective, Woods has again developed a variety of exotics this year. As usual, whether or not an exotic is called depends on the look the defense gives them.
