Next Commitment?

I hate one player classes. I realize that maybe several of this year's class might redshirt, but so might Payton.

There is at least one more scholarship available with Garza and JoBo graduating. Might be more if anyone else decides to go, too. So I could see McC recruiting 2-3 more kids/positions. Definitely centers and athletes.

Given how transfers are changing (immediate eligibility) and grad transfer market, seems wise to keep a scholarship open every year for the spring to be able to add talent if the opportunity presents itself. Of course, if you get a huge HS talent you take it. But barring that, it's prudent to keep options open for the spring.

Highly unlikely Iowa signs anyone else in the fall period. So the 2021 class will be one headed into the spring.

My sense, obviously Fran and his staff will continue to evaluate players that are out there in the spring. It's still unknown if they will be allowed to go out and see players in-person. Right now coaches are still locked down from a recruiting perspective until January 1st.

Here's what I think will happen. Iowa has at least one scholarship that will be open. Think of it like Payton is filling JBo's ride. Not the same position, but wing player who can shoot it role. So the other spot is probably a big man. No one replaces Luka. But, this spring there will be total free agency. College players are going to be allowed to transfer without having to sit. If you thought the transfer list was high before, guess what, it's going to be really high now. A lot of kids who made bad decisions are going to be looking to move on. Long way of saying, I wouldn't be surprised to see Iowa become a very attractive option for a more seasoned big man this spring. That's my bet on the direction Iowa heads.

Where do you see Josh O. fitting in over the next couple years?

Would like to see the staff sign one of the fistful of big men we've heard about the past few months. Give him a year to work with and against Garza.

I like his potential. First year it's about getting his body moving in the right direction. And they probably won't need him a whole lot this year anyway. Luka's probably playing 32-25 minutes a game. Nunge could be out there when Luka's not. From what I've heard so far about Josh the focus right now is getting him into better shape.

That's what I assumed, too, based on his background (no pun intended) and the pandemic affecting his arrival/school this year. I hope he redshirts and just settles in to life in the US and college life in general.

Tom, is a JC player a possibility in the spring?

Anything is possible, but let's remember that I think the JUCO schedule is a bit altered this year and while I know folks still look to JUCO's, frankly, not as many good players in that marketplace anymore. That's just the reality. Regular old transfer is way more likely.

There seems to be a good chance that a couple of the freshman could redshirt, including Big O. Any comments about that from the coaches?
