The Raneys

Unbelievable that a call went against Penn St and even more unbelievable that it was Angel doing it. He’s atrocious but he loves Penn St. Maybe he’s becoming an equal opportunity blind zebra.

PSU fans hate Angel just as much as most of the Iowa fans on here do, they think he screws them too. I personally don't think he's better or worse than any of the others, and I really don't see him trying to make himself the center of attention that everyone talks about. I am unsure how that wasn't a takedown here though. Love to see PSU guys lose, but only when they really deserve to lose (like Carr-Messenbrink last year when Carr owned him and they still tried to give it to Mess via stalling calls that weren't legitimate, that was egregious).

Hate is a strong word. More like frustrated with his performance repeatedly over a long time.

He has inserted himself into lots of matches over the years. And he struggles with consistency. A neutral 3rd party ref should always review his calls. That's true for everyone imo though.

I also honestly feel most people on these anonymous message boards can't name 2 other active refs in College wrestling beside him. Angel gets it worse because his name gets thrown around a lot on the boards. He is probably like "Why only me? What about the other refs?"

When fans of almost all schools know a ref by name and sight, it's his fault, not theirs.

Similar to RBY having two stall calls 15 seconds apart to tie the score in the 3rd period with 25 seconds left in the match against Fix? No stall calls for almost 6 1/2 minutes of wrestling and then those 2 to tie the match.
BTW, I agree with you that Mesenbrink should not have gotten the stall calls that were awarded in the Carr final.
The point being, Rivera does it to everyone. He situationally makes calls. Stalling should be called with the same criteria in period one as with 30 seconds left in the match.

Just as a guy that never considers himself the expert, I’d like to understand why/how this wasn’t a takedown. Looks like a hose job to me, but I might be missing something.
You don't need to be an expert. I would imagine that with reaction time they concluded that Kraisser got the whizzer in. But it was 2 seconds after Rivera awarded the takedown that he had any claim to a whizzer. Further, why wouldn't a successful challenge take you back to 13 seconds in neutral? That is the point where Rivera awarded 2 physically and verbally. From that point on Sealey was content to hang out with his toe in bounds. He would have wrested that 13 second differently if Rivera was calling out "still neutral" to the wrestlers.
Can you imagine if an NCAA final ended that way?

Refs missed nearfall against Davis on Friday and then Byrd’s last takedown against Davis on Sunday. He’s had quite a few favorable calls.
He’s one of the luckiest wrestlers in recent memory (meaning calls or no calls always seem to go his way even when they’re clear to everyone except the reviewing official). Wonder if he will throw another tantrum when he doesn’t AA again this year?

Missed or didn't think it was or refused to call? My guess it was the 2nd then 3rd options. Angel may make the wrong call from time to time but at least he's not intimidated by anyone.

And so is Ferrari. The point is if you get a team full of world team members you’re not doing much coaching. Hell, I can coach this PSU team to a championship.

But that’s silly. Look at the true freshmen seasons of some of their studs. It’s a mixed bag. You’re trying way too hard.

The point I’m making is that when you have a room full of world champs it’s not hard to win. These guys have received all the coaching they need at this point and are just fine tuning little aspects of the sport. But they learn from going hard with other talented people in the room. Ferrari mad IQ is off the charts. He’s not learning much about how to wrestle in the room and neither is Sealy.

You’re not missing a thing…. That was a TD. Maybe the worst call I’ve ever seen including the no TD for Kilkeary last year vs Davis at PSU.
Nah that was just the typical type call that psu gets at Nationals. Only reason it went against them is due to it being a back up and meet not in question.

Penn State doesn't think Angel loves them. Remember his stall calls against RBY in the NCAAs?

when talking about M* and the various paid positions at Iowa it reminds me of a quick interview i saw. It was Bartlett discussing his not so good 1st couple seasons at Pstate and how he had the team Psychiatrist talking things over with him and getting his mindset in a better frame of mind to start winning again. Do we have a sports team Psychiatrist for the wrestling team at Iowa?

I’m guessing it was the team psychologist rather then psychiatrist, but that’s just a minor detail…

Went to the Raney’s regionals today. I’d probably put Oklahoma St at the top for them. Just from what I was hearing. I’ll be at their state tournament next week. Both kids forfeited to them in the finals. Dumb. Both had 6 second pins. Jordyn pinned a kid in third period in the semifinals. Dude just laid there and was strong as an ox. Stalled the whole match. These kids are special.

That would suck! DT already has a couple of the top recruits for 2026.

They will have a serious log jam at Oklahoma State in the 33-49 range.

Why did the kids forfeit? Already advanced?
