How have I never seen this before? ( Or did I just forget)
Am I the only one thinking Arnold could be the odd man out next year? Hes not beating Ferrari out at 184, and hard to not have Kennedy as your starter next year at 174.
Would hate for him to tweak his ankle and have to get a medicalWelcome to the party. He has about 10 or so months to show he is better than Kennedy or he will be on the outside looking in. He does have two more years left after next year, and Kennedy’s last year is next year, so it is not like all would be lost.
I agree. I just dont know if he’s prepared to sit back another year. But with having a few years left he’s a longer term option. Best option is a medical redshirt if that’s how it goes down.Welcome to the party. He has about 10 or so months to show he is better than Kennedy or he will be on the outside looking in. Or he could just win the spot. There is no doubt who has the higher upside. Put in the work and take it.I agree. I just dont know if he’s prepared to sit back another year. But with having a few years left he’s a longer term option. Best option is a medical redshirt if that’s how it goes down.
I thought he was considering becoming Mormon, and was going to take a mission.. specifically whatever type pauses his eligibility clock.I agree. Well with Rocco Welsh planning on going 184. Looks like PK may start the year ranked #2. Can’t have much more upside than that..Hawks are in a good spot either wayOr he could just win the spot. There is no doubt who has the higher upside. Put in the work and take it.
You don’t think Gabe is a better athlete? Kennedy took 5 years to AA. Gabe has to take it from him, and he will be given every opportunity to do so. The ball is in his court. I think PK is our 174 next year, but I’m not counting Gabe out.Well with Rocco Welsh planning on going 184. Looks like PK may start the year ranked #2. I don’t know who’s a better athlete and I don’t know if that’s a determining factor in who has more upside. Gabe looks strong and very difficult to score on but also keeps matches close and can go either way.You don’t think Gabe is a better athlete? Kennedy took 5 years to AA. I really do appreciate the fact that this is all fun for you but have you ever considered lightening up a little bit for those of us who don’t find it as fun? I know you always say that we can ignore you but it’s really not that easy when you won’t let things go and also you do have some interesting thoughts occasionally that I do like to hear but sometimes just do us all a favor and let unimportant things like this just die out.S T A L K E R. When analyzing someone else, maybe consider yourself in the process. This is a chat room. The entire point is to have conversations. You may not like the conversations I engage in but you DO have the option to not read them or at least not engage. Over an over I have said this is fun for me. If you don’t want me to enjoy it, maybe consider the options I just listed!
Williams has the athleticism — if he develops a bigger tank, I think he can make noise. He was r-12 this year and lost to Caleb Henson in SV. Not likely to do better. Lachlan MacNeil was a possibility but he may be Michigan bound
He also beat 3 AAs and took Mcenelly to OT. A pretty solid freshman season wrestling up a weight.PSU fan perspective, which is worth nothing: Kennedy all day. He’s shown an actual ability to get to legs and…score. Often. I was impressed by him at NCAAs.
Yeah, Arnold is up a weight. But how many high AA threats can’t go up a weight and win their first match, then at least keep it competitive with a 5th place sort of guy? Foca took him apart. That’s not happening to Kennedy.
Gabe taking it to elite level is all going to come down to whether he can get to people's legs and finish shots. He has strength, speed, pretty decease tank but has not shown the ability to score consistently on good wrestlers.I don’t know who’s a better athlete and I don’t know if that’s a determining factor in who has more upside. I think PKs progress may have been held back by not being in the lineup full time. Sat behind Marinelli and Caliendo and not at optimum weight. And battling an injury. Regardless of the 5 years he stepped up and showed out this year. It’ll have to be taken from him
Too short for 174.Gabe taking it to elite level is all going to come down to whether he can get to people's legs and finish shots. He has strength, speed, pretty decease tank but has not shown the ability to score consistently on good wrestlers.
Yet he still managed to beat 3 AAs at 184. I think he places high at 174 when he gets a chance despite being too shortToo short for 174.
Funny, I had to scroll up to see who posted this, you are good at impersonating, it really is something he would post. The thing about well earned and deserved reputations is that they can change. Over time the spot on analysis and interesting lines of thought can be overridden by the constant need to be the smartest person in the room, the chat room, the MSU fan base, the Iowa fan base, all wrestling fans. Cheers MSU, you are the best! 😉
Too short for 174.
The fact is someone will be sitting unless GA cuts to 157.Gabe is going to be a tank at 174. Agree that offense will be the determining factor but I think he has the tools to be much more offensive down a weight. in my opinion his difficulties at 184 was due to him giving up a lot of size/length. he got into the habit of waiting for the perfect shot too much because it was hard to finish. hopefully the offseason gives him a reset and allows him to find that offense.
i am also in the camp that the 4th place finish from Kennedy is great but it’s not going to buy him a spot next year and he knows that. It’s going to be who is the better wrestler next year and who gives the team the best chance of winning it all.
Can he try out for the 2026 Winter Olympics and get an Olympic redshirt? Like maybe bobsled or curling?I thought he was considering becoming Mormon, and was going to take a mission.. specifically whatever type pauses his eligibility clock.

The guy Arnold beat r1 came back and AA'd btw. Also, PK lost his r1 match last year and r2 the year before. This was the first time he made the quarters. He was in a war in r1 again this year.PSU fan perspective, which is worth nothing: Kennedy all day. He’s shown an actual ability to get to legs and…score. Often. I was impressed by him at NCAAs.

I feel like we can talk until we are blue in the face about this in March but I feel like these things have a way of working out by about next February.Really love to see Gabe out there, but it's either him or Kennedy. Neither can be successful at 184, even if there wasn't already a much better option there. It seems unlikely that either of them could make a successful cut to 157. Somebody is going to be the odd man out. Right now, it's looks like that will be Gabe.
Thanks for pointing this out. I think it's obvious GA is the more athletic one of the two, but didn't seem to let it fly up at 184. There could be a bunch of different reasons for that, but I hope it doesn't follow him to 174. He's one of the better scramblers on the team and I would guess he wins most of those scrambles. Gotta have the confidence to let it fly - IMOThe guy Arnold beat r1 came back and AA'd btw. Also, PK lost his r1 match last year and r2 the year before. This was the first time he made the quarters. Gabe lost to 1 non-AA all year - DJ Parker, who finished r12. 3/5 losses went to OT and he beat 2/3 of those guys this year too.
PK lost to Pinto, who has never AA'd, and Kharchla, who went 0-2.
They're both really good 174s. Gabe was even really good at 184! Made a bad mistake and got pinned in a scramble against Parker. Other than that, every guy he lost to was an AA this year or last year and none of his losses finished worse than top 12 this year.
It's a good problem to have.
Because PK is not big enough to be competitive at 184. They're very close. It's not a given who is better. Gabe is bigger so Gabe wrestled up.If Gabe is/was better than PK, why didn't Kennedy go up to 84 and wrestle this year?
Seems odd that the coaching staff wouldn't want one of their best wrestlers at their optimum weight, rather than a "second teamer" man 174 and an undersized Gabe wrestling at 184.
it also seems like gabe prepared in the off season to go 184 - he said early in the season the cut to 174 would be difficult at that point. This off season I imagine he works to get his body in shape to make 174 an easier cutBecause PK is not big enough to be competitive at 184. They're very close. It's not a given who is better. Definitely wanna see Gabe get his speed back. Seems like he was better as a true freshman wrestling 184 with the size of a 174... i think he bulked up a little too much and lost what made him so effective, cat like quickness.it also seems like gabe prepared in the off season to go 184 - he said early in the season the cut to 174 would be difficult at that point. He's too short for Bobsled......don't you know. Can he try out for the 2026 Winter Olympics and get an Olympic redshirt? Like maybe bobsled or curling?
Kennedy is up a weight too! And he's still better right now than GA at his ideal weight. I spent pages arguing this. And the argument that it took 5 yrs to AA is a joke. He literally has 3 bad losses, and maybe 4 total to non-AAs in 5 years, most of them up a weight. The weight class is tough, he's up a weight, had a few bad losses but has consistently been ranked top 8 all year, every year. And that same Kharchla had Haines beat in the OSU/PSU dual. Trust me, Kharcla would beat GA similarly to Foca at 84.The guy Arnold beat r1 came back and AA'd btw. Also, PK lost his r1 match last year and r2 the year before. If GA were the better 74, he would have been there and Brands would have been at 84, with Kennedy as the odd man out. You don't pay for Parco, Teemer and Buch and ask your better wrestler to bump when you have another option at the weight. Enough of this. GA may have a better career but Kennedy is a stud a will likely be a 2x AA while competing at weights owned by OToole, Carr, Messenbrink, Haines, Hamiti etc...Kennedy is up a weight too! I think this trend started with Seth Gross’ mysterious back injury which allowed him to follow Bono to Wisconsin.Would hate for him to tweak his ankle and have to get a medical
There’s a video of Facundo warming up with the team prior to the Michigan match. He wasnt hurt. At least not in the teens you’re supposed to be to get a medical.I think this trend started with Seth Gross’ mysterious back injury which allowed him to follow Bono to Wisconsin.
I have my doubts about the extent of Facundo and timely/convenient injuries of others more recently.
First sentence has zero basis in truth or fact…. At all.GA WAS the better 74.
But with Nelson coming back - and he’s the best 74 of the three - coaches and Gabe made a decision to bulk to 184 for a year.
The plan wasn’t for Nelson to come back originally - but after the gambling stuff, he figured he should.
Now. Kennedy has improved - a LOT. even up a weight at 174, he placed 4th. It’s going to be a dogfight between him and GA next year.
When the NCAA assesses medical redshirts and decide whether or not to grant them, what’s the process? I assume they have some review of medical records, but maybe that’s confidential?I have my doubts about the extent of Facundo and timely/convenient injuries of others more recently.
