  • At the end of practice, the Patriots defense and offense traded places. The defense played offense and the offense played defense. Tom Brady played middle linebacker — Patrick Chung played quarterback. There was plenty of razzle-dazzle from the defense-playing offense, but they couldn’t get into the end zone on their two plays despite starting inside the 5-yard line. The message: We promise, we have fun!
  • In the 1-on-1s between defensive backs and receivers, Phillip Dorsett beat Jomal Wiltz with a savvy route. Cordarrelle Patterson ripped down a one-handed catch over Jason McCourty to cheer from the crowd. Julian Edelman beat Duke Dawson downfield on a flag route with help from a perfect throw from Tom Brady. Riley McCarron shook Duke Dawson with surprising physicality — he proved slippery on the follow rep against Dawson as McCarron beat him again. Braxton Berrios created enough separation from Wiltz to log a catch. Eric Rowe got beat by Julian Edelman, who playfully threw the ball behind him at Rowe. Rowe spiked it out of the air.
  • In 5-on-5 drills, Jacob Hollister proved one of Tom Brady’s favorite targets with a pair of receptions, one coming with Devin McCourty in coverage. McCarron continued what was a good practice, as he hauled in a ball from Brady while again beating Dawson.
  • In 1-on-1 drills between defensive and offensive linemen, Derek Rivers forced LaAdrian Waddle to hold him. Isaiah Wynn held up nicely against Trey Flowers off the left edge. Cole Croston then stopped Deatrich Wise of the right edge. David Andrews put Keionta Davis’ face in the grass. Joe Thuney beat Adrian Clayborn. James Ferentz beat Trey Flowers from the nose tackle position. Danny Shelton dominated an offensive lineman — couldn’t see who it was.
  • Phillip Dorsett beat Ryan Lewis for a deep ball from Tom Brady. McCarron continued to get volume in the competitive 11-on-11 sessions — he even got first-team reps during a hurry-up situation where Edelman was (perhaps intentionally) left out. Tom Brady couldn’t sneak a ball over the head of Kyle Van Noy while targeting Jacob Hollister. Van Noy managed to break up the pass and erase a touchdown.
  • In the red zone, Brady called a timeout before a play. He then yelled at his teammates to pick up the pace. On the following play, he found James White for a wide-open touchdown in the flat.
  • In an 11-on-11 hurry-up drill, McCarron drew the ire of Brady. McCarron couldn’t haul in a ball behind him from Brady. Brady then screamed at McCarron as if he’d done something wrong
