The Iowa State government for some reason did an investigation into the on-line gambling situation and found a number of athletes at both Iowa and Iowa State were involved. After some investigation it was determined that Noah Shannon had been involved but not in any serious matter. Nonetheless the NCAA suspended him for the entire 2023 season, his last year at Iowa. Coach Ferentz vouched for Shannon's character and Iowa appealed to the NCAA

To continue, not knowing what happened to stop my post.
The NCAA denied the appeal. I posted an item at that time noting the NCAA will regret establishing such a severe penalty on a player because if that many Iowa college athletes were so involved you can be sure this a problem throughout the country. And if other Sates do similar investigations they will find numerous similar situations. Would the then continue full one year suspensions? They would have chaos throughout the country.
Sure enough they announced three weeks ago that they were changing the penalty. So Shannon could return to practice. BUT, they have not yet cleared him to play and another 2 games have been missed by him. So he is down to only 4 games if they clear him to play before the Northwestern game. So he will have lost 2/3 of the season.
That is outrageous and a complete abuse of Shannon's rights. I do not know, of course, if this will have any financial impact on his opportunities for professional play in the NFL. And a mistreatment of both Iowa and Iowa State. I would like to see the NCAA suffer the consequences of a legal procedure if there are legitimate matters to be litigated. One cannot imagine the impact this is causing Noah Shannon. All the best to him.

My thoughts have been that the DCI was tracking a non student and while investigating stumbled on a large number of students at both universities, some of which happened to be athletes.

They probably gave a heads up to the NCAA as it’s illegal or against their code of ethics and that’s how it ended up in the media.

This is all purely speculation.

The NCAA does not make decisions based on precedent/previous rulings. Never have; never will. They’re not the supreme court. They do whatever the f&ck they want when they want and to whom they want and don’t need a legitimate reason for any of it.

Any news about Noah's possible reinstatement for the final 4-5 games?

Oh I’m sure they’ll find an excuse to delay it another few weeks.
If Shannon somehow plays the next 4 games (including the bowl game) he can still count this as a redshirt year. I wonder if he'd consider coming back.

BTW, you should change your handle. Just sayin'..

The DCI used a process called geofencing to target athletes at Iowa and Iowa State. This type of thing is done and can be done with a warrant to identify specific things. They essentially grab the signal off of cell phones or other devices in an area where a crime has been committed. Think of it as a murder has taken place and they are identifying anyone that was in the area at the time. What it cannot be used for is a fishing expedition to find criminal activity. That is what they did in this case. They went fishing for a crime and then only targeted athletes with charges. When they couldnt charge someone because their actions werent illegal they took the extraordinary step of taking their illegal search and turning information over to the ncaaa. After the fact they then went to a small county to justify their illegal search with a warrant but didn't follow any of the laws in place about investigations related to gambling. Nothing the state did was legal. Knowing this they put the full court press on kids to get plea deals over 5 dollar bets and got them because these kids don't have the resources to fight them.

In those plea deals there were a lot of "extras" that had nothing to do with the case. They were all hesitant to sign, but the DCI knew these kids just wanted this nightmare behind them and would sign off on anything. Good thing a few Iowa St kids did not sign and fought it or none of this would have been brought to light.

Interesting to think about. Didn’t realize he had a redshirt year. Hope good things happen for him. This has been such a raw deal for him.

Not apples to apples but out here in NC when Tez Walker was ruled ineligible by the NCAA ( transferred a second time) Mack Brown talked about the b.s. Everytime he was on TV and the NC AG threatened a lawsuit against the NCAA and they quickly overturned. Could Iowa have done more to push back against the NCAA?

Difference is the whole problem for Iowa and Iowa State started with the Iowa AG investigating the gambling activities. Not sure they would be much help.

They absolutely overcharged these kids to force a plea deal. What they did is disgusting and those involved should face sanctions, loss of jobs, loss of law licenses, abd criminal charges of possible in any way

They won't because the hush is on. But they should

I think it would have been tougher with Shannon because of the gambling implications vs. the NCAA simply making an eligibility decision through transfer rules. The DCI investigation and the fact that Noah did actually violate an NCAA rule betting on a sport at his school would make it much more complex than the Tez Walker situation.
