If you want to learn more about the academic fraud that went on for 18 years at UNC, check out this article: http://www.cnn.com/2014/10/22/us/unc-report-academic-fraud/

As you will read,

University Learning Specialist Mary Willingham went public with detailed allegations about the bogus classes. CNN interviewed Willingham about her years working with student-athletes. She said that she had worked with dozens of athletes who came to UNC unable to read at an acceptable level, with some of them reading like elementary schoolchildren.

Willingham also said she believes it took so many years and six previous investigations because "this is the flagship of the university system and of the state, and to admit we did anything wrong was too difficult; there is a level of arrogance here and that's part of the culture."

I hope Purdue gets the chance to play either them or Duke at home in the ACC/B1G Challenge next season (would make sense from a technicality standpoint; powers that be will probably disagree from a marketing standpoint) and hammers them.

Just another clueless person commenting on something that you have no clue about

Yes. They are. They all cluster in COMM now, where they have athlete friendly professors. They spent 40 years mastering the art of the CHEAT. They are still doing it. It pays dividends, so why would they stop?

I read the books and all of the emails and documents released. I saw the list of fake classes UNC provided SACS. That's why SACS placed UNC on academic probation. The first time it's ever happened to a tier 1 research institute. I saw a lot of the same fake classes that were also on Michael Jordan's transcript. I know that Dean Smith was the architect and Burgess Mcswain was his facilitator.
So go ahead and tell me what I don't know.

Poor Roy ...

From the article:
"But he’s also angry, mad that “this junk,” as he described it, has interfered with recruiting and caused some to look askance at North Carolina’s second trip to the national championship game in as many years.

“We did nothing wrong, OK? That’s just the best way to put it,” Williams said. “Were there some mistakes made? You’re darned right there were. Were there some things I wish hadn’t happened? You’re darned right. But there were no allegations against men’s basketball.”

Later in the article:

"The emphasis is mine, but the words are those of Kenneth Wainstein, the former U.S. assistant attorney general asked by North Carolina to investigate the fraud. While some of the players involved surely preceded Williams’ time — the fraud dated to 1993 and Williams didn’t arrive until 2003 — Rashad McCants told ESPN’s ‘‘Outside the Lines’’ that he never wrote his own papers.

For some of the premier players, we didn’t write our papers,” McCants, a member of the North Carolina team that won the national title in 2005, told ‘‘Outside the Lines’’ in June 2014, three years after the Raleigh News & Observer began reporting on the academic irregularities."

“It was very simple,” McCants said. “When it was time to turn in our papers for our ‘paper classes,’ we would get a call from our tutors, we would all pack up in one big car, or pack up in two cars, and ride over to the tutor’s house, pick up our papers and go about our business.

My reference is to you calling these kids cheaters. These kids had nothing to do with it. Show me proof that these kids are cheating.

Roy Williams STILL works there! The guy that learned how to cheat at the knee of the master, Dean Smith. If the conspirators are still in power, the status quo of cheating is a given.

Roy Williams CHEATED his way to the 05 and 09 titles! This is not open for debate! Now you want us to believe that he up and quit cheating? Go back to that cesspool in Cheater Hill.

Are you saying they were not aware that a class you basically neither had attend nor do any work for was not a legitimate college course???

...when your obvious bias makes it impossible to be rational...

Roy's the biggest, lying snake there is. More lies fly out of his mouth than any other coach in America.

But don't you love his "Sheriff Andy Taylor of Mayberry" act? He turns on the "Aw shucks, I'm just a good ol boy" when he needs too.

Funny how Rashad or any of the other student-athletes never complained about not writing their own papers while they were playing. Instead, Rashad wants to sue for not getting an education while enrolled in college. Mr. McCant's NBA career never materialized so now he wants reparation for his lazyness. Former OSU running back discussed how the coaching staff at OSU tried to pressure him to enroll in easier classes during his time at OSU.

Yep. No sympathy for him or anyone else that chooses those kinds of programs. That's why it's a choice made by people of no character. You choose to play ball at one of those cesspools, you have no character. No "good" character anyway.

No doubt. If your the parent of a highly rated basketball player right now, are you looking more toward your sons shot at the NBA, or what little education he'll get at a supposed school of higher education like UNC? So what happens if he doesn't make it or he is injured? How well prepared to function in life will he be?
By the way Scout , I agree totally that Mr. McCants and his family have no one to blame but themselves. Unfortunately everyones a victim these days.

In light of all this I wonder if Marcus Paige would have chosen a different path for his college career had this come out a few years earlier. From what I've heard he took his studies pretty seriously.

There are some mighty high horses being ridden around here. Makes me laugh a little when I remember the time Iowa briefly and rather entertainingly out cheated the cheaters. Roy Marbles free throws in the UNC vs Iowa game ring a bell with anyone? Pretty tricky dicky there. I know, I know, that hardly registers on Cheating scale when considered against years of institutional cheating and pulling one over on Dean Smith did feel good but it wasn't exactly fair and I don't remember any Iowa coaches jumping up and informing the officials that the wrong guy was at the line.

Yes. One moment of poor sportsmanship = 4 decades of systemic cheating and fraud. The 2 are exactly the same. GTFO of here!

The message was for entertainment value, not an expression of belief. Just a fond memory. Perhaps you should invest in some medication or take up yoga. I do believe I put a qualifier in there that indicated I wasn't really matching the two on the heinous scale, just enjoyed the irony is all. Not exactly certain what "GTFO of here" means but I think I can figure out your intent and will let you know, baring death and the "crick don't rise" I don't plan on going anywhere unless Tom boots me.

Scoutrefugee - please tell me why a response of such anger and disrespect was deemed necessary. Were you joking? I have a sneaking suspicion you are not and I truly am mystified by the response. I understand that it is sometimes difficult to divine what a persons intent may be when posting on line. It is not always possible to relate the mirth you are enjoying when relating a particular story or memory and I do believe I wasn't coming off as meaning that the two situations were deserving of equal condemnation in the regards to the heinousness of the acts. I would appreciate knowing what your response was intended to do.

It was an over reaction to the other UNC trolls. Sorry. Must be getting grumpy in my old age.

I fully understand the old age part since the 67 in my moniker denotes my age, and not my year of birth. Although I am rather round and have hidden under a few bridges in my time, I am not a troll of any stripe. Thank you for the cordial response.

Scoutrefugee - Is the Scout in your name referencing a certain kind of Scout? My interest is piqued because I am still a registered adult Boy Scout in southeast Iowa. I am no longer a Scoutmaster but was for 10 years. I created and Scoutmastered a troop of the mentally handicapped in 1978 and then took as many as 28 MR (both children and adults) scouts to summer camp every year for 10 years.
