Northwestern pushed us around.

We may have pulled one out on our home floor, with a last second (very low%) shot but this game illustrated another of Fran's glaring weaknesses. The weight room.
When you are being bullied by NW, you are in trouble. We have players with good frames, they just don't change over 4 years. We are physically ready for a game in the 1970's. I still think Fran builds his team around how he saw himself as a player.

Pushed around on both offense and defense, glaringly so.
Yes and some is attributed to attitude but remember Hawks are mostly playing with sophomores and Northwestern was playing with seniors and grad students. Filling out also takes some time besides just weight training.

I think the Cats were well coached and knew how to exploit Iowa’s weaknesses. First half they weren’t prepared for our outside shooting to be so good but second half half they weren’t prepared much better . They knew to double Owen and realized every time he gets on the block he’s looking to score and he’s not yet as adept at kicking it out quickly enough to get open 3’s. Lots for the Hawks to work on . Getting a healthy Traore back will certainly help in lots of ways.

I watched two fringe NCAA Dance teams duke it out - solid players for sure, but neither team oozed athleticism/passed the eye ball test for a program that would make a deep run in March. By all accounts Fran made some nice portal pick ups, but nothing that will move the needle for the program in the grand scheme of things.

Yeah, I've brought this up before. If you field a team like this, on the slow lanky white side, you better make up for it with excellent shooting and passing skills. No way should our free throw shooting be that bad.

Yes, our guys are twigs, no strength in our Wings in Payton, Pryce, and Josh and also our PG Harding.

I wonder if Josh Dix returns next year to Iowa as he probably is worth $400K/yr on NIL market and Iowa NIL is at garbage level. When
we lose that type homegrown player to another school, that will open eyes.

Josh ought to be bulking up if he wants to play in NBA---he looks to be better NBA prospect than Payton.

Weight training has no place in basketball. If one team is physically abusing the other team, they're not playing basketball. This bullshit of thug ball has to stop. And it would be easy. Just call every damn foul. Thug ball ends in days if not minutes.

And yes, part of the equation is attitude. Iowa doesn't play that way. Iowa tries to play basketball, not rugby. And I like that. But I will also say this: If you're getting pushed around . . . at Costco, on the playground, on the sidewalk . . . you'd better start pushing back, even if it's against your principles. When playing at the Y or the Rec Center, you'd better believe I play basketball, BUT you'd also better believe if I start getting pushed around, I don't just take it. I give it back. And that's where Iowa comes in.

If the reality is that they're letting the other guys physically abuse you, don't back off. Give it right back. But basketball success should NEVER be based on weight training and physical play. When it is, it's no longer basketball.

I 100% agree with the bold comment. There is no excuse for Iowa players to be underdeveloped.

Wow, what have you been watching the past 20 years? Maybe the dumbest line I've ever read considering any sport. I'm not an NBA fan, but watch occasionally. Those dudes are strong & everyone lifts weights. This isn't a video game. Strength, especially in the paint wins every time. Fighting for rebound position, defending the paint absolutely depends on strength through WEIGHT TRAINING!

I've said it before, Fran needs every recruit to start bulking up & getting stronger through lean proteins & weight training as soon as their high school season ends. They need to be stronger the second they step on campus. This is BIG10 basketball, not your local YMCA rec league.

Tell Seth Curry and Michael Jordan that weight training has no place in basketball. Two of many players who took their game to the next level with weight training. Proper weight training can do things like improve flexibility, reaction times, speed, vertical leap, hand eye, the list goes on.

Can't get outrebounded by 10, at home, by NW, that is a problem
And Fran continually plays Dembele and Brauns, both who are good size players but can't rebound a lick. Last night in 16 minutes Dembele had an incredible 1 rebound and Brauns in 4 minutes had zero. Quite the haul for those two don't you think. Maybe it's time to see what Riley Mulvey can do, at 7 foot, he can't be any worse then the 2 worthless players that Fran puts out there.

No one wants to watch a game with no flow to it and free throw after free throw. Same reason why they don't call every travel and carry.

Power also, a form of weight training. Power lifting should be required for all post players Centers and Forwards, beginning in high school. Acceleration/quickness is a valuable BB skill.

Right, excited to get the win, but disappointed in our rebounding. Freeman gets 3 rebounds, should have had 10 against this team. Dembele just doesn’t show any aggressiveness going after rebounds, doesn’t even get off the floor much of the time. We have to have more urgency in going to the glass if we are going to have a chance against Michigan.

Northwestern was a lot bigger then Iowa. I thought our defense was good, shooting pretty good. I was impressed by northwestern, big and skilled team. That was a great win no complaints here.

If Seydou can stay healthy, I feel he can be a difference maker.

His athleticism alone will help elevate the teams flow and transitions and hopefully keep opponents from double teaming Freeman.

For me, Dembele is the real disappointment so far. His apparent lack of willingness to rebound in particular.

correct, and to add. the Coaches and the NCAA committee create and define the rules not the game officials. Basketball at this level is not much different than the game in Kinnick with pads. It's advantage/disadvantage and ALL contact is incidental until illegal. These players are big, strong and very quick. Watch the Coach's reactions to most of the contact...mostly non responsive because they know the rules. Officials want good flow to a game and try not to unnecessarily whistle game interrupters but rather call the obvious. 99% of the fans don't know the difference.

Strength training is a must for modern athletes in virtually every sport.
It is absolutely a flaw of Frans recruiting over the years that he pays little attention to this.
Basketball players don't need to be body builders. But the effects of valuable, functional physical strength can be seen in player physiques.
Most of the Iowa players, the Sandforts being prime examples, don't display on court or even have the appearance of "wiry" strength.

Yep... Would it kill the Sandfort boys to do a few curls now and then? C'mon boys!
