I think this B1G season, Connor, BE, and JT to a lessor extent have had 2 big games. i.e. scoring 15 or more points and hitting threes. If they were consistent shooting these, we would have won most of the games we lost. Seems like every other 'good' team has guys that don't score much for average - maybe 8-10 - but when wide open can hit threes at around 50%. Our guys can't (other than CJF).
So without shooters out on the court, the defense can leave these three wide open and sag in on Garza and never leave JW alone. And when Joe drives the 3rd defender not on Luka and Joe can come in and double Joe also.
Am I wrong?

We've known this for 5 months. Things haven't changed and they won't the rest of this season. BUT things could change next year and be a really great year if Garza comes back...

(1) Offense is not the team’s primary issue. They rank 6th in the country in offensive efficiency per Kenpom. The defense still is the primary issue as it ranks 85th nationally (12th in the Big 10) in efficiency.

(2) Yes it would help tremendously if McCaffery, JT, JW, and BE were more reliable 3-point shooters. With that said, when CJF is healthy and JW is his usual self, the ordinary contributions from McCaffery, JT, and BE are enough for this team to make a run in the tournament. The problem lately has been that JW’ offensive output resembles McCaffery’s. We need at least two dependable perimeter shooters.

Just curious, is this a recent revelation or have you thought this for a while?

The team is built around Garza with solid, but not All-American type of guards. This hasnt changed since the start of the season

Iowa could make a run in the NCAA tournament as is, but let's not start bashing the team for what they arent.

I think maybe our early success was because the opponents hadn't figured out how to beat us - double Garza AND JW when he drives. There are always 2 players available to slide over to double them. Early on other teams hadn't figured this out and we looked pretty unbeatable.

Unbeatable....unless it was a road game.

Conference play is always like this. You get scouted during the regular season and your weaknesses get exposed,.. The game tends to open back up a bit come tournament time when you get to play teams that haven't been studying you as closely as your conference opponents have...

Teams have been doubling Garza all year.

With different levels of success.

The two teams that did it best were DePaul and PU.

For the most part Garza has still been able to score against doubles.

Iowa needs to get allot better at exploiting the double though. If a guard gets left open he has to cut and not stand.

We are 5-5 over our last 10 big ten games, people have been doubling Garza since December. Everyone should seriously relax, this Purdue game is really mindF**king much of our fanbase.

They're panicking because they think it's another late season collapse.

Which doesn’t make much sense. Even if Iowa loses at Illinois, which seems somewhat likely, what happened the only other time that the Hawks have gone on a two game losing streak this year?

They subsequently won five straight games, before losing AT Maryland. This team has earned the benefit of the doubt. I will wait until there is a collapse before worrying about a collapse

Apperently Purdue is to Iowas basketball team what northwestern is to the football team.

A team with inferior talent across the board that happens to have a particular strength (rebounding) that exploits Iowas primary weakness.

Purdue hasn't reached Northwestern territory yet......

Before we play the talent card let’s remember we start a freshman, a red shirt freshman,a sophomore, a red shirt sophomore, ands junior.

Remember Luka as a freshman and sophomore. Like most underclassmen we expect their game will grow.

We are inconsistent but that happens when you start two freshmen and two sophomores. Don’t give me they’ve played almost a full year. It takes time to mature physically and mentally.

Iowa had hell of a lot better season than I or anyone else on this board predicted. A lot of it had to do with guard play because you saw what happens when we lose even one of them. Luka is great, but someone has to get him the ball and play well with him. And the guards have come through more often than not this year.

Exactly. This is the most physical and toughest league in the nation and all the teams know each other. L

I am thrilled with our season this year. I wasn't expecting much. Then got my hopes up. Then our weaknesses were exposed. Right now I don't see us winning against a top 20 team unless our outside shooting improves.

very true . purdue did such a good job of bringing baldy from the opposite wing almost on a dead run to double garza . if someone would have cut from the opposite wing they probably would have had a layup .

So based on the headline - didn't we beat Maryland, Illinois, Ohio State, Michigan? Or are they not good teams??

They're not good teams.....because we don't have the guards to beat good teams. I'm certain the NCAA tourney seedings will reflect this.

B1G will probably be lucky to get 4 teams in the tourney.

Iowa has beaten a lot of ranked teams this year. Personally, I like our guard talent, and believe it will be deeper and more talented next year than in a very long time.
