This never should have gone to trial. People with good hearts and heroic minds will see people that need help and not get involved. Why would someone put themselves in the situation where they may be put on trial for manslaughter? Years ago, I caught a guy trying to break into my neighbors house and fought him. He didn’t look like he was a stranger to drugs, what if his heart had exploded and he had died while I was trying to subdue him, while my wife was calling the police? Crazy backwards world we’re living in. Glad Mr. Penny isn’t going to prison, but rioting will commence nonetheless.

but i think reasonable people can disagree or at least be concerned about where we draw the line on appropriate defense of self/others and vigilantism

Had he wanted to **** this little thug up, his point of impact would have been firmly against his trachea and he would have adjusted his arm to use bone vs. the soft notch of his elbow. Try this at home--slide the edge of your wrist where your thumb ends, firmly against your trachea. Now imagine it being forced with multiple points of leverage from behind. Game over! Secondly, he's not even trying to torque his head. Third, he's not even using his grip arm to add pressure to his wrap arm--it's just kinda resting on the criminal's head...unless Dan has a 24" hand. lol Fourth, look at Dan's face...calm with no flush or grimace.
