I have many days where I fail on puzzles like this. But I think I’m learning. I first saw the yellow had 5 obvious choices and realized one of them will be necessary to fill another category. So I skipped it for a while. Once I got the blues that narrowed yellow down and the rest was easy.

I think I’m on to your tricky patterns NYT.
