Truth be told on this subject I probably align with strummingham. Though calling Obama a liberal democrat seems a bit off. I don't pretend he is what you guys imagine liberals are but is a bit more of a hawkish neoliberal.
I don't typically lower myself to the labels. But, sometimes it's the only way to communicate with people who need to use the labels.

I was actually being somewhat facetious. He's NOT "liberal", whatever liberal even means. That's part of the whole ruse. These labels- left, right, conservative, liberal, neo-con, whatever- are indistinct. What really happens is the same old thing no matter who gets installed in that office.
This, like anything else Middle East related is a "damned if you do and damned if you don't" situation. Probably doing the same thing any other POTUS would do.

-We have forces taking shots in Iraq
-We just sent some troops to Africa to help combat Boko Haram, now that he has aligned with ISIS.
-Now we are sending special forces into Syria, something we were told wouldn't likely happen.
-China has been testing our waters and vice versa.
-Russia is going around doing whatever, and picking their shots.
We have much craziness going on, and they are all big issues.
