What an all around shocking performance! 55 points is the most points Iowa has scored against OSU in history! Un-freaking-believable.

1. Stanley - Today was the kid's coming out performance. 20/31 for 226 yards is solid, but the 5 tds and 0 ints is historic. That's 1/3 of the touchdowns that CJ threw all season last year. Stanley was hitting on his deep balls, his check downs, his throws against his body and play action roll outs. He was also staying up and delivering throws even after being hit. This was Stanley's first big win, and it won't be his last. If we can teach the guy to scramble for first downs every now and then, and find him some D1 WRs, he could be a first team All-Big 10 QB next year.

2. Running Game - Thus far, our running game has been the most disappointing unit at Iowa. Wadley came into the year averaging over 6 yards per carry, and Butler is a 2,000 yard grad transfer. Despite the talent, our running game was ranked nearly last in the Big 10 after 9 weeks of play. Today was another story. Wadley was used the right way, out running defenders around the corners, running counters, and catching passes. The coaching staff got the memo that running a 190lb back up the gut against 9 men in the box over and over and over again isn't going to work. 20 rushes for 118 yards is solid against anyone, but this was far and away the most yards gained against OSU all year. Butler came in relief and had 10 carries for 74 yards, mostly running right up the middle for tough yards. Even Toren Young had 50 yards, and he's hardly played all year. This is how the running game was supposed to play. Are we ever going to see Wadley and Butler in the game at the same time? It would be nice.

3. Sudden Coaching Creativity - This was a huge, monumental upset, no doubt. The use of the tight ends, the play action, the proper utilization of Wadley, the beautiful fake field goal. But WHY WASN'T THIS OUR SYSTEM IN OUR VANILLA, LACKLUSTER PERFORMANCES VS. MSU, NORTHWESTERN, etc.? The same players who put up 55 points vs OSU could barely muster 10 points against inferior opponents. Our defense hasn't changed; it's all on the offensive play calling. Too much learning on the job and randying around by Brian Ferentz. This team is too good to have 3 losses already, but let's hope the high scoring offense is here to stay.

4. Josh Jackson - I was tough on Jackson in the past for his god awful punt returning. As a CB, however, he has always been solid. I was a little surprised last week when publications came out touting him a possible high round NFL prospect, as he barely even played last year. With 3 interceptions on national tv against a Heisman contender, I think it is safe to say that talent scouts from every NFL team will be taking a good look at his tape, and Jackson won't make the same mistake King did in coming back for his senior season. Barring an unforeseen injury, Jackson is going to be the next great Hawkeye DB in the NFL next year.

5. True Freshmen Still Playing Like True Freshmen - It's great seeing Wirfs out there playing well as a true freshmen. But what's up with the most highly hyped kids in last year's recruiting class? Epenesa played quite a bit today, but he was blanked, with zero tackles, and he has a combined 2 tackles in the last 3 games. Brandon Smith, our diamond in the rough savior at WR, has dropped/fumbled more passes this season than he's caught. Literally. Max Cooper had his redshirt burned, but has yet to even have a pass come his way in 10 games. Smith-Marsette had the infamous wide open deep ball last week that bounced right off his facemask, and today he returned a kickoff from the 1 yardline to the 7 yardline. And what happened to the punter who burned his redshirt in the 8th game of the year, averaged 52 yards per punt, then found himself back on the bench this week? These guys have potential, no doubt, but they are playing like freshmen.

6. Tight Ends - TE U is back! Fant and Hockenson had 125 yards and 4 touchdowns! George Kittle, a starting TE in the NFL this year, had just 300 yards and 4 touchdowns all year last year. These guys are big, fast, and have great hands. Best of all, they are both going to be around for several more years catching passes from Stanley.

couple responses...hunches anyway.

1) I get the feeling one change on offense that has been implemented all year is "QB's job is to pass". Meaning, the lack of scrambles is by design. CJ's happy feet tended to get him in a lot of trouble through his career (taking big hits), and they don't want a repeat.

2) Regarding AJ, Iowa historically (imho) on the line, their main job is to occupy the o-line so the rest of the defense can take the ball down. In other words, AJ's lack of stats ain't surprising, and must be doing enough good things to see the field.

Besides, Iowa rotates the hell out of their ends this year anyway.

He's just what, 18? Give the kid a chance.

lets start with the OL
1st in the 1st 6 games the OL went thru 6 different sets what helps is the Welsh was out of his element at RT
now todays OL has been together for 4 straight weeks and it showed,
2nd RB Burler missed several games and the defenses have sold out to stop Wadley. Butler has been back for the last 2 games and Iowa has won both games
3rd this is the 1st time all season that there were no major injuries. to cause the coaches to make ZERO changes, on offense or defense.

the good thing is Iowa loses just 3 offensive starters, and the FR/RSFR are growing up right before our eyes. its really is to bad that people were/are expecting these 1st year starters to play like 5th year seniors.

BF is learning on the job and will only to get better
Wadley thru 13 games had 1081 yards rushing and 315 yards receiving for 1396 total yards, thru 9 games has 771 rushing yards and 308 yards receiving for 1009 total yards with 3 to go before the bowl game. Wadley can surpass last seasons totals in 12 games.
what Iowa does not have is a power back like Daniels although a healthy Butler is a good bruiser like Daniels was now that he is back teams can no longer key on Wadley like they have been.

Why do you guys humor this clown? And why did he have to change his name? He doesn't even understand what the word objective means.

Personally I think we saw things in our losses before the game we thought we could exploit like ND rushing over MSU, and we were slow to adjust.

That is my assessment. I, also, think JD’s knee was worse than we were all thought. They and losing our OTs hurt us early.

It's also not unusual for a team that gets embarrassed in a week to come out on fire and play an excellent game the next week. Players are more focused in practice and want to make up for the week before. And, as it turns out, Michigan State is actually pretty good this year.

I agree completely, and maybe that is it or the hangover from PSU. With that said I think we stuck with beating the analytics and balance a little too long. NS is good.

#5. Ohio State has maybe the best offensive line in the nation. They've never allowed more than 2 sacks in a game. Epenesa mainly plays pass rushing downs. He also had a pass deflection. He did his job today.

Also, Barrett runs the ball. I think Iowa is less likely to push the DLinemen because they are trying to cover the running lanes and keep Barrett from making big gains. Of course, the side effect of that is Iowa doesn't get much pressure on the QB which can be frustrating as all hell if their QB is hitting the underneath receivers. Fortunately, Barrett is at his weakest when he is forced to sit in the pocket and throw.

Which brings up another point. Why did OSU move away from the QB run-option? It seemed to work really well in the first half. Did they get worried that having Barrett run the ball 60 times was going to get him killed or did Iowa make adjustments I just didn't notice?

He's a Cyclown troll that gets off taking back handed swipes at Iowa in his "objective thoughts" threads. Now go back and read his nonsense and see if it doesn't match my description.

O-line, D-line stepped up today and dominated. Short passes on first down which opened up the running game. Looked a little like what BF saw during his days at New England. Nice change and a hell of a lot better to watch.

Also their d-line did not stack box.Challenged us.Their 4 vs our o'line.Opened them up.Qb.plus Fant and TJ opens lots of space.Again not STACKING box huge no?

players actually catching the ball and not fumbling also helps in reguards to a good to great offense,

the OL is coming together at the right time and are giving Stanley time to check down.

Butler being back is a big help in the running game.

Though they don't use him much, but Toren Young could be the power back. You are gonna see a heavy dose of him next year.

actually people are going to see a lot of him
Young has Power and speed that is better than Daniels, the power is about equal
IKM has the speed and catching ability to replace Wadley,
to me Toks could be the 3rd down back which will be a good thing in the run game and passing game,
Young already has 34 carries for 161 yards
IKM has 14 carries for 94 yards and 2 TD's
these are the future RB's and both are just FR and can be the featured backs for the next 3 seasons.

Zero turnovers were huge. Eliminate those against MSU and NW and you win.

Future looks very bright for this team next year. Only concern is we lose all three starting linebackers.

Overall just a huge win and the Hawkeyes are front and center in the national media! Great exposure for the program. Hats off to the players and coaching staff!

Yes. Not sure if it's arrogance or ignorance that made them play like that.

OSU Arrogance...but with Iowa coming out throwing, it is harder to stack the box and not give up big plays as long as Iowa OL protects. I thought the OL protection was fantastic and Stanley's pocket presence was off the charts.

OSU should have sent the house on every snap. That's what I'd do if I were an opposing defense. Hard to get your TEs in the passing game if they have to stay in and block.

as for losing all 3 LB'rs there are 2 SR LB'rs ready to step in SR Hochady and SR Mends. the LB'rs have been improving to the point of them just reloading,
people were wringing their hands over how Iowa was going to replace King and now most of those same posters are worried that his replacement Jackson is going to turn pro after just 1 season.

Jewell even as good as he is, will be replaced with somebody just as good.

Looked like adjustments to me. Our dl worked hard to stay in lanes and step opposite the slant of the OL block. Jewel also keyed more completely on JTB and moved to the weak side as a first step much more often to close down the back lane. Our DEs started to take a more inside route on first step and LBs played a little tighter to the line - trusting the DBs to cover for first few moments until LBs read pass and then dropped into coverage.
