Lack of stalling calls for going out of bounds...has the rule now forced more action on the mat, or is it a case of the refs starting to swallow their whistle?

I noticed there were a few times that when Iowa would get a leg up, NCST would hop to the edge, and then try to break the hold before going OB....

Ref last night needs to do middle school meets, or move/stay out east. He surely didn't cause last night, but he didn't help either.

The primary ref did look like he was in over his head.

Hey -- it's tournament time! This is when refs across the country start swallowing their whistles. It's a tradition about as old as the sport, itself.

I guarantee that there will be some big matches at Nationals won and lost due to a ref swallowing his whistle instead of making the correct stalling call on the edge. Book it.

How about the Cooper match where refs continued with the second period into third without any break.
Stalling calls were very inconsistent the entire match.

To be fair, that was largely on the clock operator, who apparently figured that breaks between period were overrated and just kept on going from the 2nd into the 3rd. In 40 years of following the Hawks, I don't think I've ever seen that happen with the clock, BTW.

Granted, the refs should have been aware of the clock, too. That exchange pretty much took Cooper out of the match by taking away a beautiful takedown, not to mention setting Gantt up to get the major.

Not a strong outing for the refs last night.

It very much changed the match. I was checking IAWrestle's PBP and saw the takedown making the score 6-8 and thought Coop was going to come back and make a match of it as I expected. Then I check later and it was gone and he got majored. That's a big difference for the match and the outlook for Copp the rest of the way.

I always think of Delgado wrestling Nashon and he's already got a stall call and the last 10 seconds he dances away celebrating. I dream of an official with the stones to call that with such little time left.

Would have to agree with TNT. I thought the refs. were terrible. The team score wouldn't have changed but why waste money for a second ref. if he does nothing and sees nothing. Every close call went to a monitor and took way too long. Get rid of that guy if he does nothing!!!!

There's no incentive for multiple refs to contradict the lead ref...they're peers and in competition with one another. I've experienced this in freestyle as the mat ref constantly looks to the other refs for confirmation before making a call. They're always going to stick together so they don't ruffle feathers. The only way to make this work is to have an independent ref for reviews. By independent I mean someone who isn't competing to wear a whistle and raise someone's arm at the end of each match.

The ref on the mat in freestyle does not have the final say or close to it.

The mat official and the judge make their call. If they are the same the chair scores it. If they are different the chair decides which call to go with.

If the chair thinks the other two completely blew the call he can call the other two officials over and over rule them.

The chair is the person who sits next to or underneath the clock. He's really the only one that matters.

Copy all Omaha. I understand what you're saying but it doesn't work that way here in Japan (and in Korea). It's more of a clown act, but then again so is some of the NCAA officiating we've experienced.

I have recently gone back and watched a few matches from ~5 years ago. To my eye it looks very different. There is much more continuous action now. It's almost like they were using out of bounds to pace themselves.
