I ask because I am not sure. It is great to hear that he wants to come back for his 5th year. I thought I heard someone say right after we found out Ott was lost for the year that he had about a 20% chance for medical redshirt. I was thinking he had played too many games despite having very limited snaps.

Anyone with more info?

He is over the 30% games limit. Seems like chances are low, but I hope for the best. 20% sounds reasonable.

Upon further review...the player didn't play a whole lot of games in his career because of injuries...yes, he back...

I think he has a pretty good shot. He didn't redshirt so he still has a year on his 5 year clock. He only played full games against Ill St, Wisc, and maybe N Texas? He sat out Pitt, played 1 quarter at ISU and 3 quarters vs Illinois. If you add that up it is only 4 games and 30% of Iowas season is at least 4.2 games.

I believe they count all games and participating in a single snap counts as a game. I don't seriously think he has a chance here....

As great as it would be to have him back, not gonna happen. He exceeded the playing limit criteria set for medical redshirts.

He'll get a shot in the NFL, whether it's late in the draft or as a free agent.

I think, to an extent, they look at the whole story of the players career. Was it a bonehead play to burn his shirt his freshman year late, late in the season? Yes. When you take into account, the games played this year, and time in the games (ISU, Pitt, Illinois), it's possible they could give him the year. I think they are going to say that he really couldn't go against Pitt and was testing his elbow. Add in that he eats eggs whole, it's guaranteed.

I don't think he'd apply for it if he didn't have any chance at all. I read in the Gazette that there's a six person committee in the Big Ten that reviews these, and Barta is one of those six. They meet again in Feb and will review it. By all means, that doesn't mean he'll definitely get another year, but it can't hurt. I think he has a good chance to get it. Not having a redshirt year will help. He may have played in 5-6 games this year, but several of those games he barely played at all due to injury or limitations from an injury. Having 14 games this year is a huge plus, too.

How will this affect his draft status? Players have to declare in January. If the group doesn't meet til February, does he sit out the draft, hope for a miracle, and try the supplemental draft if/when he's denied? Or does he play the odds and declare, ending his eligibility?

I corrected this point in another thread. They do not look at if he played 1/2 or 10 plays in a game. If he participated, it is considered a game played. He's from Nebraska, so I certainly dont wish him ill will, but I dont see even a remote chance, and dont know why people would think they would change the criteria for one guy. It isnt going to happen.

Was he injuried early in his freshman year? I can't remember if injury was a factor in keeping his redshirt on as long as they did. Multiple injuries over the years could help his hardship request. Hopefully Dave Porter's sister is counciling them.

Too bad his teammates weren't mean to him after an altercation over a cable bill. Those are slam dunks.

Two separate injuries this year and both requiring surgery, an insider told me at least 50/50!

I assume he's wanting to come back and play for the hawks again or else this wouldn't even be discussing it. Right? That would be great if he did. It would probably help his nfl chances.

If it is cut and dried...a computer program would be in place to decide before even taking the time to fill out the paperwork whether he would be granted the extra year or not...one would think.

Must be some "common sense" that the committee looks at...outside the sterile numbers and guidelines...

I think it's very unlikely. He participated in too many games.
It's a medical hardship not a redshirt, so games played may not matter as much. Yeah if he played in eight or nine games, not much chance. But he was hurt in the second game and missed time. Then came back and played hurt for a game and a half, so as medical hardships go, he may have a better chance then some on here think.

Does it make an difference that he is applying for a 5th year and not a 6th?
