The WRs that Got Away

Let's not forget the over hyped Oliver Martin who couldn't figure out what school to attend on a consistent basis. I think you can make this post about most of iowa transfers. Many many transfers and only a handful made a big impact with their next team.
He gets an ‘incomplete’ - how many schools did he end up ‘suiting up’ for anyway?!?!🤪 Tia

Iowa's wr room had one high quality player in the last half decade. He saw very little PT and was buried behind much lesser talent. Then became a one season superstar at pu.
Iowa's got a mountain to climb to get out of the position they've put themselves in.
Having Budmayr involved in the reclamation project is the equivalent of imposing a penalty on themselves.

I wouldn't be so fast to look down on Oliver Martin. While at Iowa he (like many talented WRs before him) only had 5 catches in his only season (mainly because Brian Ferentz had him at the end of the bench behind walk-ons), Martin had a pretty productive career after leaving the stink hole offense.

Martin went on to have 25 catches at Nebraska, averaging 17 yards per catch! I don't think Cade McNamara can even throw a ball 17 yards. Then last year he was a WR on the Jacksonville Jaguars practice squad. That's more than we can say for virtually anyone else he played with at Iowa.

25 catches, wow!! Do you remember the hype when this kid was recruited and Jimbo jumped in the pool when he committed to Michigan. Severely underperformed his recruiting stars

It's de ja vu all over again. The Hawkeye WR room has been a national laughing stock for more than 5 years now. While players and coaches have come and gone, the lack of talent at the WR position remains

Bostick. When hyped but unproven WR Jacob Bostick announced he was leaving Iowa and transferring to talent rich Texas A&M after receiving big $, fans were left scratching their heads. Did A&M see something in the guy that Ferentz never did? After all, the guy had high expectations going into last season, yet finished the year with ZERO receptions. It turns out, after six games in the SEC, Bostick has a grand total of...ONE catch for 14 yards. It came at the end of a blowout win against an FCS school. Bostick likely would have had his union card at Iowa by now and been starting this year.

Vines. What about Iowa's other WR to jump ship after last season, Diante Vines? Vines played way more than he should have last year with mixed results. He had 12 catches for the Hawks and something like 14 drops. Like Deacon Hill, Vines realized he had no business playing Big 10 football and ultimately transferred down a level to Old Dominion. This year, Vines has 20 catches for 190 yards. He too would likely be starting for the Hawks this year.

Kasper. Then there's Kyler Kasper. The 4 star legacy recruit had Iowa in his final 2 schools out of high school. He ultimately chased the $ and the high powered offense and picked Oregon. Unfortunately for him, lots of 4 star WRs go to Oregon and Kasper wasn't utilized at all during his first two years. Iowa was desperate for talent at WR those years, so during this past offseason, there were rumors Kasper was thinking about transferring to Iowa for playing time. He ultimately stayed put at Oregon. So how is he doing in his 3rd year with the Ducks? He is 9th on their WR depth chart and has a grand total of...1 catch. He too would likely be starting at Iowa.

Brecht. Brecht was a 4 star guy who never lived up to his football potential. Rather than endure another year with Brian Ferentz calling plays last year, he opted to focus on baseball. In this, his senior year, Brecht likely would have been the team's primary WR. While Brecht was drafted by the Colorado Rockies organization, he does not have any pro stats yet.

Johnson. Believe it or not, Kaegan Johnson, who started at WR for Iowa way back in 2021, is still playing college ball. Oddly, it appears he peaked his freshmen year at Iowa, where he had 18 catches for 350 yards. In six games this year as a senior at Kansas State, Johnson has 14 catches for 161 yards. He's their team's second leading receiver.

Bruce. Arland Bruce should still be a senior in still in college. He too started for the Hawks as a freshmen in 2021, where his career peaked with 25 catches for 209 yards. He had a sophomore slump, left the program to get away from the Brian Ferentz offense, then was embroiled in the gambling scandal.

Not all WR recruits turn out to be stars. But it's mystifying just how bad Iowa's eye for talent & retention is at this position. Unfortunately, with the Cade McNamera 100 yrd per game passing attack, and Iowa's worst coach/recruiter Budmeyer responsible for recruiting and coaching all new WR talent, the future is anything but bright.
The only thing worse than our abysmal QB recruiting, is our WR recruiting. The only WR we've had that was worth a damn since ISM, left because KF wouldn't play him.

Dont forget, that WR was not recruited by Kirk and paid his own way to come to Iowa as a walk on while guys like Ragaini got 6 yrs of scholarship.

How many WRs have had 25 catches in a single season at Iowa over the past 5 or so years? Can’t be many

Lack of talent?!?!?!?
How about having a first team all american as your fourth receiver who scored for the Bengals on Sunday?!?
How about having a utility guy that Brian doesn’t know how to get the ball, that is currently the starting running back for the New York Giants?!?
Talent isn’t the issue.

talent is the issue. our wr room is full of guys with a lack of power 4/5 offers. how many have been drafted over the yrs? Charlie Jones was a walkon when he came to Iowa and he improved more than most and got drafted as a return specialist not a wr. TT could not catch so he was moved to rb. until we get guys with more talent, we will be seeing 9 men in the box.

Charlie Jones was a first team all American at receiver. Point blank period. The problem was Brian and that’s led to everything else.

I am not a Brian fan, but there is not much u can do when teams load the box and u have wr's that cannot beat their man one on one. we end up playing in a phone booth. until we get more talent our passing game will suck.

Yea. There is. You scheme route and concepts to beat that. You don’t stick your head in the sand and double and triple down on the same route tree.

I would suggest that Brian being the OC means there is no one on this earth that could do more.
- If your WRs can’t get separation……..you recruited them and are playing them.
- If your QB can’t get the ball to where it needs to go………you recruited them and are playing them.
- If the defense is stacking the box………call something else besides zone left and zone right

agree. it starts with recruiting better talent and that is on the coaches. Lester is better than Brian, he has designed a running game that can hit a home run with #2. the problem is some games we will need to outscore someone like Mich st and it is very difficult to do that with no passing threat.

To be honest, I thought Kaleb’s long TD was a fluke. MSU held him all day and he just happened to get around the corner. Other than that, he was completely held in check.

ok...so why does the passing game suck this yr? coaching or lack of talent?

Have you watched our quarterback try and complete a ten yard pass to a wide open receiver?!? It’s a 50/50 completion percentage.
And then Brian drove the offense into the ground with receivers like Charlie Jones, Tyrone Tracey, Keagan Johnson and Arland Bruce. That’s not a bad wide receiving room.

Iowa's struggle at WR recruiting is a chicken or the egg situation. Our offense for starters hands the ball off 50% of the time and then the first option on a pass play is usually a TE. Why would you come to Iowa if you are only going to see 2-3 targets MAYBE a game?

Considering those above factors, they actually have pulled in some decent talent. Johnson and Bruce were both solid, Brecht might have developed but we will never know. Tracey and Jones both left because of lack of volume.

I really liked Johnson and Bruce, and after seeing them (in the beginning) I honestly thought MAYBE we had turned the corner (from playing walk-ons). But alas…..💎

Iowa is where WRs come and do nothing or leave. I’d venture to guess that most MAC programs have equivalent or better WRs than Iowa…

Because of $$$ or the Offense Iowa runs?
It's NOT the money.

Troy has better WRs than Iowa. James Madison has better WRs than Iowa. Iowa State has far superior WRs than Iowa.

All Iowa has is the most lucrative Big 10 tv deal in college football history and some of the highest paid Hawkeye grads playing in the NFL. Yet somehow everyone else is able to recruit WRs without Iowa's resources.

Johnson and Bruce did have some talent. Brecht did not. Jones was far and away the best talent on the team and was being wasted in a completely broken offense at Iowa.

The problem prior to this year was everything. Brian and Kirk had no idea how to build and run an offense. The biggest problem far and away this year is the QB. He has had innumerable opportunities to make plays that most could, but he could not. That's still on Brian and Kirk. The legacy of that disaster remains and this season isn't changing any perceptions. People thinking Kasper's limited success at Oregon is going to send him to Iowa is laughable. If he still sees himself as an elite prospect, why would he submarine his career by transferring from an elite group to one of the worst environments for wide receivers in the country? Did it work out for Brown? Who can Iowa point to as an example of success? The guys who left?

Little of both. From the jump they just wanted him to be happy and make his own decision. You would hate to have your kid go to your school when it's not what they really want and be miserable. Kyler liked the Hawks....but he also built good relationships with kids out here in AZ including some ties to Oregon. Then his recruitment blew up. Tenn, Oregon etc made some crazy NIL offers. Kaspers' aren't the quitting kind. If...and it's a big if....he were to leave Oregon, I would be stunned if he didn't wind up in Tempe.

Nice recruiting good grief is KF lazy or what wont travel wont recruit wont play a real achedule same old same old every year

Brecht made the right decision. He's a millionaire now. The only two on that list that'd make Iowa significantly better would be Johnson & Kasper.
OP has repeatedly put Brecht on the list of WR recruits that didn’t pan out, especially after he chose to focus on baseball full time…when anyone who followed his recruiting at all knew that was always the most likely outcome. He simply had a much higher ceiling at baseball than football. Considering he was a first round pick this year, it’s hard to argue he made the wrong choice.

To be fair, Iowa tried to get Tracy to switch to RB, but he said no. It wasn’t until he got to Purdue that - in his second year there; he accepted the recommendation.

No arguing about it with Brecht. I think his slot value he got for signing was $2.2 million. He wasn't ever going to get that as a WR.

Did Brecht come to Iowa on a football scholarship or baseball scholarship? Football you say? Hmmm. And he took up 2 years of limited scholarship space as a WR (i.e. more than Wetjen & Drew Stevens)? It's irrelevant to whether he panned out in football that he's good at baseball. The fact remains he came to Iowa as a highly rated scholarship WR and didn't pan out. That shouldn't be difficult to understand.

You can't be this dumb. If he played football he couldn't have been on a baseball scholarship.
