***Official Coach DeVries to Iowa make it happen thread ****

Drake in the semi finals of Arch Madness down 3 starters to injury has 8 scholly players left. Year 1 of tenure as Head Coach had 3 months to build a roster from scratch and is now 24-8.
And his Drake team would be an upper tier team in the BiG ?? Give me a break!!

Drake is gonna beat the sh*t out of us in Des Moines next year. In 5-6 years DeVries will be running a Top-25 P-5 level program somewhere (maybe Iowa St).....and we'll still have Barta and Fran....
Want to bet. Iowa does not play Drake in DM next year.

DeVries had 3 months to assemble a roster from scratch and he's the MVC coach of year and Drake in Semis for 2nd time ever. Get. A. Clue.
Yes, impressive. But Fran had just about the same credentials. Took teams to the NCAA by winning the conf. tourneys. One invitation conferences. His first year at Siena, he had a similar situation, some kids did not stay at Siena, just like they did not stay at Drake for this new coach. So sometimes mid-major coaches work out when hired for high majors, sometimes they don't. I myself would like to see what happens next year JT and PM coming in. BTW, ISU beat Drake at DM this season, while we beat UNI.

Until Iowa decides to make a commitment to basketball facilities (ranked 12th in B1G), recruiting budget (ranked 13th in B1G) he will no more success than Davis, Alford, Lickliter, and Fran have had on the recruiting trail. Can’t do anything about being ranked #14 in recruiting base but facilities and budget have to come up to at least middle of the pack in the league if you expect ANY coach to succeed. That is of course they hire a coach willing to grease some palms. But even then top recruits won’t want a program without a practice facility and don’t want to train in a high school weight room.

Let’s be honest for as good of a season drake had in a bad MVC there are so many more attractive mid major coaches out there over a guy who has been a head coach for one season who isn’t making the ncaa tourney.

I’d take Eric musselman of Nevada, Nate oaks at buffalo, Greg Marshall at Wichita st or if you are taking someone from mvc porter moser at Loyola are all just a few that would be better mid major options than devries.

Porter Moser is hardly someone I would get excited about. Great run last year, but check his overall record. Not good.

Didn't we already make the mistake hiring the "Flavor of the Month" in Lickliter? I seriously doubt McCaffery is going anywhere after a 20+ win season, so we may as ell bite the bullet, hope Fran makes some staff changes and see what happens next season.

The two hires before F McC were the hottest young coach on the market, coming off a sweet 16 performance with a Mo Valley team and he drug the program into the gutter. Then we hired the national CoY and he reached new depths of failure.

Any coaching change is very risky.

As is an AD hire. I am open to both under the right circumstances, but I would love to be able to have a logical conversation instead of overreactionary pessimism that works against us.

Don't like these fire the coach threads until fire Barta comes true. I don't want him deciding breakfast let alone the next coach.

I wouldn't be surprised, or disappointed, if we targeted an MVC coach from Iowa. I just don't think that coach would be DeVries.

Barta really is an awful AD. Giving in on the McC suspension without a word about what caused the outburst was about as cowardly as it gets.

The Iowa basketball facilities are ranked 12th in the conference. No coach in the country can recruit to a program without a state of the art practice facility complete with weight room, locker room, lounge,.............Iowa’s basketball facilities are lacking, only Penn State and Rutgers rank behind Iowa’s. Add to that Iowa ranks 13th in the league in budget/resources with only Penn State trailing in the league. Iowa can not do anything about being ranked dead last in recruiting base but if facilities and budget are not brought up to at least middle of the pack there is not a coach in the country Iowa can bring in to overcome a handicap in recruiting.

You are correct on facilities but your budget claim is misguided. I agree though, need some upgrades

I’m getting much of the info from a 2018 analysis/poll. Here’s how it ranked Iowa basketball:

History/tradition 9
Media exposure 10
Game atmosphere 11
Budget/resources 13
Recruiting base 14
Facilities 12
Selling Pros 10
Admission Req. 1

Gave the Iowa basketball head coaching position an overall ranking of 11th “most attractive”. I saw another analysis that had Iowa ranked 9th best job in the league. Any way you look at it, tough job to compete with the rest of the league right now unless Iowa administration makes more of a commitment to basketball.

I plead ignorance, but didn't that $45 mil addition to CHA include team locker rooms and weight rooms along with the practice gym? And those are out of date already?

For example I think they still share the weight room with all the other sports (except football of course). Many B1G teams have committed to a basketball only strength coach, as far as I know Iowa has not done this yet.

It could be that the top tier programs have dedicated facilities for each sport. For example, I read somewhere the Oklahoma softball program has its own indoor practice facility they don't share with anyone else. Whereas I believe we have a building that baseball, softball and the marching band use jointly, and that's a fairly recent development.

No. Have gotten a tour of it. Before it was built I can understand the complaints but not now. It is a nice facility. Are there better ones? Of course. But not like it is so far the rest of the league.
