*******Official Cubs 2025 Thread*******

Oh I get that, I'm just saying at some point you need to shit or get off the pot. That shitting part for me is you have the best minor system in baseball, while the pot part is you can't trust it.

I'm actually convinced that Hoyer and the GM are actually clueless, or are so invested in metrics that they won't bring kids along and let them do their thing.
It’s been obvious for quite some time that Jed is not great at his job and has many faults as a decision maker. I don’t expect him to be around after this season.

I think they wanted to ditch Nico and put Shaw at 2B. They would have gone short term at 3B until Smith could possibly be ready in 2026 is what I am saying.
I think it was always going to be Paredes OR Nico that got dealt. Without the surgery, maybe it would have been Nico and then Paredes would have been fine at 3B for a bit.

Looks like Brown gets rotation spot #5 (Rea to bullpen) and Keller is being added to the active roster.

Brujan has conveniently hurt his elbow, so he may be saved from a DFA and instead start the season on the IL.

Unless Assad or Miller start the season on the 60-day IL, a 40-man roster cut is still needed (in addition to an active pitcher being optioned or DFA'd). I've been predicting Roberts for a while. If they go with that, then Morgan likely starts the season at Iowa.

Elbows are tricky. Always prone to the inflammation and what not.

This is why the Cubs can’t have nice things. Hurts extra hard as an FSU fan.

If Nico doesn't have surgery I don't think they make this trade. They would have added a bat most likely, but not being able to deal Nico hampered Jed.

I have to say that statement is like the most Cubs thing ever. Cubs traded for (maybe) a one year rental, and it "could" end up like Brock for Broglio.

I think if the Cubs had balls, they'd be my Uncle. Sometimes you just have to take a chance. I'm not trying to be a smartass, but damn, Astros maybe have 3 players from the Cubs who will play significant roles for them.

That sucks.

At this point, I’m done with Jed. Could have just kept Belly and still had Cam. Now we may have lost a perennial all star
For basically belly for cheaper. ****

How 'bout instead of griping about it, we all just root for Hoerner, Shaw, Workman and Tucker to all have awesome seasons and we can forget about a former Cubs farmhand and a two other players who underperformed playing on an AL team?

And I don't think Tucker being a Cub in '26 is out of the question.

Fair enough. But some of you will rue the day Jed let Mike Tauchman walk for nothing to the White Sox!!

Would be hilarious if Tucker signs with the Astros next year.

Sorry, I have to try to find humor in this. Dumb trades like this just drive me insane.

We do all have to remember this is just spring training stats for Cam Smith, which are basically the same as the spring training stats for Gage Workman. It was a steep price to pay and I said at the time it's probably not a good trade if you don't make a VERY REAL attempt to resign Tucker, but let's keep everything in context.

I wasn’t griping at all. I actually still don’t mind the Tucker trade, though there are scenarios where it could look terrible. I do not think Tucker will extend in-season, but I think the Cubs will have the chance to keep him if they will pay market rates.

If the Cubs plan to sign him this offseason, then why make the trade for a 1-year rental? I feel like you make this kind of trade for the exclusive negotiating rights, in-season.

I skip over your texts without reading them in this thread.
FYI.
I'm only here to agitate.

But I do admire the loyalty of Cub fans.
But I'd have a difficult time understanding why a franchise with the resources this team has continually sucks.

I agree, and they still get those, so there’s a chance - but as we’ve seen quite a few times, the elite players often want to hit the market to see.

I do agree that you don’t make that trade unless it was just Jed getting desperate to pull off one season (possible, but then why not more aggressively pursue other moves?) or you plan to take every shot to convince Tucker to stay. Also worth noting - the Cubs can put the full-court press on this season to make Tucker feel at home and that this is where he’ll want to play the bulk of his career and go into the FA portion as the favorites to keep him….and every player has a number they’ll sign for. If Tucker is at all happy in Chicago and the Cubs hit that number, he’ll stay.

Brasier to IL (he has really sucked, so I hope this injury has something to do with it - another infamous Cubs hip injury), so it looks like Morgan will break camp with the big leaguers today.

Still no word on the 40-man move.....

Edit - also, Keegan cleared waivers, so he'll spend yet another summer in Des Moines.

Agree, but they gave up a big time prospect for a slightly increased percentage at signing Tucker. Dumb

As far as Cam Smith, relax a little. The Astros shed payroll during the offseason in a bit of a soft rebuild. I like it when both teams win in a trade, so hopefully this works out for everyone involved. But, Smith is a ways off from knocking 40-50 homers in the majors this season.
If I was an Astros fan I'd still be scratching my head at how the Jose Altuve in left field thing is going to work out.

I’ll feel better about the Cam Smith deal when Owen Cassie gets back into shape. If he progresses this year he could feasibly slide into RF next season.

Jed put himself in a corner where he had to make a big move to help the team get to the postseason this year. If he misses the playoffs, he’s likely out and not here to offer Tucker a bag. Cam Smith was a STEEP price to pay, but context matters.

Hopefully Tucker has a good April and May. So the Cubs can move him for some decent minor league prospects. I just hope that Happ and Suzuki didn’t ruin his career already.

Belly versus Tucker? Not worth the squeeze
