Iowa travels to Northwestern for an early 11am game. Northwestern is/has been a pain in Iowa's side for sometime. This is a game that could really propel Iowa to a great regular season finish or bring on the struggle to 6-6. So what happens? Well I think Northwestern wins as Iowa just isn't that good on the OL, Run Game, Pass Game, and Secondary.

Northwestern - 31
Iowa - 21

I agree, Iowa no pass rush, soft in the middle on defense, Jackson will be able to get outside. Northwestern will make us throw the ball. Not a big game for Wadley. Rutgers punished Illinois running the ball. We struggled.

Stanley throws 4 TD passes, and completes a bomb. Hawks score on a trick play and win the turnover battle. Fitz has the Cats in the game but Hawks win 38-31.

Unfortunately I see a repeat of Penn State. The Hawks don't get beat deep but bend to a good back (Jackson) and the short passing game which will negate any Hawk pressure.

Bad guys 24
Good guys 17

Iowa bucks the trend and actually gets out a fast start. 2nd half is a headache but we hang on for the win.

Iowa 31
NW 24

Or we look like garbage and lose an ugly one, who knows.

Forecast currently in Evanston for Saturday is 72 degrees and partly-cloudy.

If that changes and there is some wind off the lake or a little moisture on the field I could see that being a factor. Is it just me or does the grass in Evanston always appear longer/thicker when Iowa plays there?

Turnover battle wins the game.

Hawks - 72
Purple Kitties - 9

You mean like the last time we played at NW? Missing half our OL and both starting RB's and a gimpy QB, and we trucked the Cats on their homecoming 40-10?

Just FYI we aren't playing PSU this Sat, and these guys aren't even close to that level. Everytime we play the Cats, its like everybody is scared of the boogeyman.

I'm assuming you were referencing the "NW is a pain in our side" part of his comment with this? If so, I'll go out on a limb and say it had more to do with last year's game. You know, the more recent example.

Iowa would be favored on a neutral field... which means they should win on saturday because playing there is like playing on a neutral field. Iowa wins if they can stop turning the ball over. Thorson has been throwing picks left and right this year.

For what feels like the first time all season Nate Stanley connects on deep play-action to ISM on the very first drive of the game.....then, to send a message following the bye week, he does the same to Meerkat on the second drive and before you know it, the running game has room to operate and Akrum-IKM &TYoung are off to the races going for 300+ yds in the final three quarters - Iowa offense racks up 8 plays over 40 yrds and Tyler Wiegers even gets in on the fun in the 4th running one in from the 10 yrd line.

With so many big plays the Iowa D spends a little more time on the field than desired and gives up a few of their own, but the good guys triumph 54-28.

And last years game has as much to do with this year as 2015 does, SO? I just don't see the love for the Cats. Here's a few points on Saturdays game.
Iowa is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 conference games. Iowa is 17-7 ATS in their last 24 road games.
NW is 1-6 ATS in their last 7 home games against teams with a winning record. Thorson is struggling. He has a 1:4 td to int rate last two games. NW is 101st in NCAA football against the pass giving up over 250 yds/game.
Look for Stanley who has a 15:2 td to int, to have another big game to Fant, Hock, Easley, MVB, ISM, hell even B Smith gets his first completion. Look for T Young to get a rushing td in the 4th quarter as Iowa pounds with the run, after Stanley riddles them for the first three quarters.

While I agree with you that last years game nor 2015's (nor 1897's for that matter) have little influence on this year's game, I'm still trying to figure out why you decided to go with 2015 when we also played them last year. Normally, the more distant from the current year the less applicable the comparison when looking at a game where you have ~25% team turnover every year.

Regardless, his point, which was pretty obvious, is that NW has been a PITA for Iowa since Fitz has been there, and have knocked off better Iowa teams at a pretty good clip. 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, last year... I honestly don't know of many Iowa fan's that are not pretty upset with NW's success against Iowa under Fitz. Do I think Iowa wins Saturday, yeah. But I certainly won't scoff at anyone who thinks we might drop one to them.

I guess I used 15 because we were on the road, and pretty significant dogs. I'll admit it just irks me that even when were playing coin flip games, we have so many posters who come on and predict an Iowa loss to almost EVERY team on our schedule. I mean, do I think we could lose Saturday,SURE. Do I think we should lose Saturday to this years NWestern team? NO. So why would I as a Hawk fan come on this site and predict they'll lose by two touchdowns? If so many people think we should lose games like this, then why do the same people come on here and bitch during and after the game if we lose? Aren't their expectations being met, if they think we'll get blown out by Nwestern?

Hey, Northwestern fan here.

For what it's worth, regarding our defense, we've been pretty stout against the run recently (Wisconsin 109 yds, Penn State 95 yds, Maryland 85 yds), but our passing defense has been downright atrocious at times.

I would also say that given NU's struggles on offense against halfway decent defenses and the fact that I consider Iowa's the best defense (though to be honest, I haven't watched a ton of Big Ten games this year) we will face the rest of this season, you can count me among the worried.

Iowa has struggled to run the ball all season. And for whatever reason(s), the defense usually struggles to figure out Northwestern. When it comes to this game, records, stats, trends, etc. don't seem to matter, which is probably why neither fan base ever feels comfortable predicting this game.

I believe the Northwestern game will tell us a lot about the trajectory of the rest of the season, especially with Iowa coming off a bye. If Iowa wants to be competitive the rest of the B1G schedule, the offense has to show marked improvement Saturday.

If after two weeks of preparation and "working out the kinks" and it's more of the same with the offense, then it seems very unlikely significant progress will be made on that side of the ball this season. If the offense lays another egg this week vs. Northwestern, then Iowa likely finishes the year 6-6 with a toilet bowl invite.

This is a really huge game for Iowa. It's not just about getting a W, it's about establishing moment for the 2nd half of the season after having two weeks to prepare for an opponent.
