*****Northwestern vs Iowa Game Thread*****

two bad passes on inbounds plays and at least one into the post. FWIW, CC had a fair number of TO's but still ended up with double digit assists most games.

Couple up top as well, so ne to a girl that finally tracked it down snd then threw it away herself as soon as she got it😂

Like others have posted, missed layups, and possibly Hanna's could be attributed to her first game back after a severe concussion, and were late in the game. A few dumb passes, and the TOs were down somewhat, but I would hope they could get in the 10 range.
I'm writing this in general and not just to you. I've seen TOs talked about in several post. I picked yours because it expresses what I think is a hard task (bold text) to accomplish with this team.

You do realize the well-oiled machine and veteran players of 2024 avg ~14 TOs a game? Kash Alexander also said what was preached when she played at IA was 14 or less. Now, I realize you "hope" they can do this and so do I. However, with a bunch of role players and a bunch of new freshmen getting a lot mins, I think it's a big accomplishment if they come near to this 14 TO threshold. Meaning I expect this to be closer to 18 to 20 ~half the games. Lately they've hit right at or near 14 which is progress for this team.

Btw, our team is currently averaging less than 17 TOs per game now.

Anyone thinking freshmen coming in from the high school level should only create the same amount of TOs as upperclassmen do has a HUGE screw loose. It takes time to get use to the faster athletes and pace at the next level.

Aaliyah Guyton has made big strides in the past 5 games getting use to the pace and decreasing her TO rate with playing more time. The reason her per 40 is so bad yet is because of all the TOs earlier in the year. Mind you she got a very late start to this year because of her injury on top of it.

This is the whole point of playing talented freshmen more mins when upperclassmen are marginally better. If you think you can learn this faster pace by sitting on the bench, you have another HUGE screw loose. They need playing time to work through faster athletes/pace, screaming fans and excess pressure to see if they can handle it. We need to find those players who want to sharpen their skills.

So yes there s/b an expectation that the TO rate is higher than normal and yes I expect that TO rate to go down as the season is drawing towards the end. However, lowering TOs doesn't happen by sitting on the bench.

It is what it is….she’s had plenty of time to differentiate herself and she hasn’t. Not even that surprising. She’s a freshman post🤷‍♂️

It’s also one of the casualties of dropping Hannah down low like everyone wanted
A concern I have for the future with another tall 5 coming in is what kind if offense is JJ going to run?
These tall 5s don't lend themselves to an uptempo style of offense. At present they can't seem to run a set offense.

I like this line up, but like Stremlow for KF. I think Stremlow can do a lot of the things Kylie can do, but understand why you've put her ahead of Stremlow....

McCabe getting near 20 minutes/game is too much. Unless she's drilling 3's (more often no than yes) she doesn't contribute much. Again, there is probably some loyalty to her for 'waiting her turn' but it's become clear why she wasn't getting minutes the last couple of years.
?? She wasn't getting minutes the last two years because she had Kate ad Gabby playing ahead of her. Thats the biggest reason. More and more Jan is playing Lucy and Guyton together in the back court and for good reason.

We have a strange amount of fans that have agendas that they hope the “coach” pays for
I'm not sure its "an agenda" for most fans. Saying that is just as reactive as you claim many other posters are. Its certainly a concern as I said earlier because of the portal and the way these players jump teams now and can play right away. As for her family moving to the area, thats certainly a good thing, but there are a number of good schools within a couple of hours of Iowa City, so....

Meh…. you’re a good dude and I know you and I have mostly got along, and I understand I can be irritating, even to you. But in my life experience if you’re consistently complaining about things and consistently take a negative slant you suck the life out of everything. 🤷‍♂️

And I’ve been there and I know what it’s like. If you say something once sure, no big deal but if it’s a consistent theme, then it’s just who you are.

I agree the complaining gets old and its reactive during and after every game. The main reason I rarely post during games, football or basketball. Theres too much passion built up and we don't always weigh everything before we post. I'm struggling with this deal with Ava though. Everytime I see her on the floor she just looks so much more athletic then AOG, and I keep thinking if she was playing more we might see the kind of growth were seeing from Guyton. AOG had a couple of really good games early (like Drake) but she seems to be reverting to the norm against good teams. I'll just wish for the best, and hope Ava hangs i there and keeps putting in the work.

Heiden can run the floor. She isn't a Stuelke rim runner, but she's done that a little bit this season. I think the hope is that Heiden/Hays can give you a game like Raegan Beers (OrSt/OK) when some size is needed. Oklahoma goes pretty fast. That said, some of those bigger athletic players are unicorns.

I'm convinced the plan coming into this season was for Hannah to play the 4 with Heiden backing up AOG in the post. This would explain recruiting Hays at 6'5" to back up Heiden in 25-26. That plan derailed with Hannah's preseason injury and her failure to develop a mid-range jumper. The end result has had a domino effect and forcing JJ to do a lot of experimenting and shuffling players in and out looking for a winning combination. I truly believe success in the future still depends on Hannah at the 4. Otherwise we will likely have the same conundrum with Hays coming. If Stuelke can go 6 for 6 from a 15 ft. freethrow line there's no reason to believe she can't do the same from elsewhere.

Heidens ability to run the floor is why I think she should be the sub for Hannah. I shudder whenever OGRADY s in the game. She slows everything down not to mention the turnovers by trying to force it into her. I'm surprised JJ hasn't been able to teach her how to present herself to receive t h e ball. Not just stand waiting for the lob. Bad on the passers lobbying it to her also

Heiden and Hays both can handle the uptempo better. They are more mobile and athletic as well. Plus they're rebounding machines which goes towards them being more mobile and athletic. Someone can correct me on this, but from the highlights I've seen of Hays, I even think Hays might be slightly more mobile and athletic than Heiden. Of course, need to see her play at the college level to validate this coz HS can be deceiving based on competition.

They both can also move to caught a pass that doesn't exactly hit them where their hands are currently positioned.

“Layla is more physical down low, has a better jump shot and is a more consistent scorer,” Hebert-Truax said.
"She’s a big who wants to play big, not shoot 3s and try to handle the ball. She camps in the middle of the key, hits the boards and owns a FG% of .592. And don’t sleep on her defense." Here's a small sample of her highlights.

"I'm so excited and playing in front of this fanbase played a pretty big role in my decision," she said. "Seeing the support system here is amazing. I'm blessed to be considered and even be offered by them."

Now there may be another option next year. It was kicked around recently about converting Ava to a 4 next year as well. Maybe a competition between Hannah and Ava to see who ends up with best stroke from distance next year? We have no idea if Hannah will develop her game at the 4 this late in her career. That means we will possibly have the same problem next year with 3 players looking for playing time at the 5. Would be nice to shuffle these 3 around the 4 and 5 spot as needed next year if their development pans out that way.
That came out of this interview...

Can Heiden hit a jump shot? I believe she can. How far can she go out?

Article by Kyle Huesmann on 10/10/24.
"Ava Heiden may be the answer at the five. A freshman, four-star center from Sherwood, Oregon, Ava is an athletic post player than can run the floor, finish around the rim, grab rebounds, block shots and shoot the mid-range jump shot."

Here's Heiden hitting a recent jump shot above or at the FT line against IN. It will set you back $499 for a large. Wonder if these girls get any NIL cut for this?

Against BYU...
"Ava Heiden makes a jump shot from 13 feet out. Hannah Stuelke with the assist."

File under "good problems"?

Hard to know how tough Hays will be playing against tall athletic competition, but you hope competitive drive brings it out. Hope she comes to campus in shape and ready to go.

If Iowa can land an athletic scoring wing the pieces will be there. (Curious what Mallegni can bring to her sophomore year.)

Just going to have to puzzle it together. Again.
Teach these post girls to play fast and run!

I’m just not convinced Stuelke will ever be able to play the 4. She’s our best athlete and will be a Sr so she’s starting somewhere next year. We’ll have 2 young bigs that we will need to find out how to use. Hasn’t worked well this year.

Such a strange issue to have recruiting success bring about a problem like this, and even more confusing if things pan out in such a way to make Deal/Guyton a running focus. They have to rethink how these positions will be used to get the best five on the court.

Journey Houston might add to this mix as well.
A big coaching job ahead.

Guyton seems pretty versatile. So at that point it’s like having 2 pt guards which is great. If Houston can handle the ball as well the more the merrier as we’ve seen what happens this year when hardly anyone can really handle. It’s clear that Hannas best position for this team is the 5. Now maybe if she’s healthy in the offseason and puts in the work to make herself a 4 we can get our 2 bigs on the court next year. Otherwise I’m not sure what we do with them.
