*****Northwestern vs Iowa Game Thread*****

What I’m confused about is how much our post players over the years improved, especially Megan and Czinano (I get Monica had CC) and Jan was kind of the big girl whisperer. Zero or 1 dribble off a great pass as they sealed the defender off. Now we have terrible angles and stare down the defender and then throw it away. What’s happened?

It is what it is….she’s had plenty of time to differentiate herself and she hasn’t. Not even that surprising. She’s a freshman post🤷‍♂️

It’s also one of the casualties of dropping Hannah down low like everyone wanted
This exactly. While the team is still not great with Hannah at the post it’s the best we’ve got. Should we move Heiden in the starting lineup where honestly she just hasn’t been great and put our only athletic big at the 4 where she struggles? Heiden will be fine. But she’s got a lot of work to do.

The upside for Heiden is great, and she's going to keep getting better, but Stuelke was the POG tonight, needed to be in there every minute she could. If she was struggling to get anything done, fewer minutes and more time to play all three. *Some better concentration on some layups and she has a 30 pt. game

O'Grady had a pretty good game in Seattle, so I can't really blame Jensen for playing her. I mean, you think and hope she is still going to do some good things. She played 12 minutes.

The unfortunate thing here, is that not one of the three can slide into the 4 without an issue.

I'm more referencing with Hays coming in and HS having one more year.

Can be maddening at times but take the win. Iowa is lacking in quality perimeter players, Our best guard is a freshman that will continue to get better with playing time and experience, Our 2nd best guard is still playing in H. S. It will get better. Caitlin made a great comment when talking about the difference in the WNBA vs college, While obviously players are more physically gifted, She talked about how a lot of college players don’t have a good B.B. IQ, Caitlin, Kate and Gabby are really missed in that area.

I will join in with the masses in regard to Ava, Unless there was an issue we didn’t hear about it makes zero sense why she didn’t see the floor. While I get having Hannah play the 5 cuts available minutes I still think you give her some of AOG’s minutes.

Finally, I think Jan feels so much loyalty to Syd, Kylie and AOG that she probably gives them more minutes than may be warranted, They are what they are, Good quality role players but not talented enough to get you in the upper echelon of the conference. I still hope Jan looks to the portal to add another quality perimeter player.

I’m not trying to be a dick here, but Lucy Olsen is an average passer at best, I like Lucy. I think she’s a solid player but I swear to God she says “what the hell, let’s give it a try“ multiple times a game. Those cross court inbound passes underneath the basket have gotten stolen every time she’s thrown them. And it’s been more than one, hell I think it’s been more than five. And the freshman, lack prudence and conviction both. Which is almost an oxymoron, but at times they should be more cautious and at other times, they should throw the pass when it’s open, and they rarely do.

And AOG has average hands at best and very limited, jumping ability.

Throwing it over Hanna on the other hand is quite a feat😂

I see this another way… Those freshman girls make way too many mistakes still to take their spots. They will be better I agree, but they aren’t now.

Other teams don't inbound the press like Iowa. I imagine that is a player issue, but also then a coaching issue. Lots of failure to pass in to players streaking laterally, and poor screens. Lack of timing? Anticipation?

More often than not you see a player with space available to come to the ball, but nobody goes off-script to just make the play. Experience?

Idk. That last inbound should have been a hard screen for Guyton to get the ball. What are they even doing?

1- I can't tolerate the stationary passing. We don't dribble to create angels, we just stand and everyone else moves off ball.

….Many of those passes to Hannah inside were mostly off cuts and dribble drives. AOG also utilized many passes to cutters as did other girls. It’s there, it’s maddening to me fans miss it…inconsistent sure, but it’s there…

2- the entry pass to the post is fine but it can't be just one person to look for.

….They overthrew HS & AOG both, and a couple others…

3- Not playing Ava Heiden is maddening. She is the best 5 on this team, no doubt. I think O'Grady works hard but she's just not close to Ava on both ends.

…it’s odd, but in no way is she currently the best. Doesn’t pass out of the post great, she’s timid and lacks conviction on the box…..

4- Guyton is now playing a lot more, as she should. I'm confused as to why Kylie keeps playing over McCabe.

….Shinmy told you during the game why she plays & McCabe is just as up & down with less size, less athleticism and poorer defense….

5- Still too many girls watching as shots go up and not enough boxing out.

….our rebounding is sketchy, but there is no way a “post” coach isn’t telling them to box out. We are inconsistent just like everything else….

6- inbounds plays are just not productive enough. Against the press, sideline inbound plays, under the bucket.

…..Yes, we are very poor at this and I do believe she can & needs to do a better job….

Your points for #1-

Yes, when we are successful. Watching moments particularly in the first half where the ball came to the top of the 3 point line. There were tons off ball screens and cuts that were happening but the ball itself stayed in one spot. Defenders watch the eyes and body language which ask say "I'm looking inside". In a few possessions we got called for a 5 second violation as the screens and cuts weren't getting open and nobody came to the ball. We had a typical turnover on a pass out of bounds and a third one that was stolen by a player sitting on the pass. All three came from a player catching the ball and not moving their defender. I think we need to dribble those lanes open or, like you mentioned, attack and look to have a post slip or kick for 3. Just too stagnant for me.

For #2, when we are successful we do get more players attacking down hill or the ball constantly moves side to side while posts look to pin their player. I was referring to the idea that it is good to get the ball into the paint and not the physical pass itself. To what you said, yes, we badly miss passes inside to anyone and that has to be fixed.

For #3, I think Hannah is best as a 4. She is the best post player we have, to be clear. I think Ava needs minutes and they need to be coming from O'Grady.

For #4, I have been on record defending McCabe's defense, it isn't that bad. As far as up and down, I'm not sure I agree with that either. Kylie averages over a turnover more per game, is less than a 70% ft shooter, drives out of controller more often, a 25% 3 pt shooter while having the lowest fg % on the team by a wide margin. McCabe is shooting 46% from 3, 45% from the field total, 80% from the line for crunch time, turns the ball over less than 1 time per game. I would roll with Taylor.

#5 not accusing anyone of not coaching it but it's not getting done consistently enough in games.

I still am holding out hope this all clicks and we will get it going but it's a reasonable belief to think we go 1-4, 2-3 at best in the next 5.

Things work when players dribble to the paint. You can see an effort now to do that, but they fall into major lapses where they fall on bad habits. Stremlow getting a 5 second call without using a dribble is maddening. Dribble the ball. She knows this. It's like a QB brain freeze waiting for a player to get open.

Heiden should be getting minutes ….she plays an entire game…defense, rebounding, blocking shots. She is a much better athlete. Maybe AOG has some better touch around the rim right now but ….. teams score at will with her in game. Hard to watch at times.

Need guyton in game to take some pressure off olsen. She looks exhausted to me.

Wouldn’t it be fair to say the upperclassmen are inconsistent as well? Look I’m not saying the freshmen should get all the minutes, They are getting minutes and experience, Personally I wish some of the youngsters got more minutes but I get Jan believing in her upperclassmen.

I did

Is there a perimeter player in the BIG that Stremlow can stay in front of? She is a good basketball player with Missouri Valley athleticism.
I respect that she tries hard but she in over her head. Often a deer in headlights on offense and as you mention struggles on defense. Her standing at the top of the circle taking a 5 second call with a dribble to use makes me want to pull my hair out. Terrible at getting passing angles.

Getting the win was good. NW like others shooting out of their minds compared to usual. I think payback for the last few years is on these teams minds and they are really locked in vs us.

Lucy was back down to earth. She really struggles with passing.
Feuerback starts the game with an out of control drive and chuck a prayer up.
Stuelke with her best game but struggling at the same time missing bunnies.
Can someone please figure out how to feed the post or stop trying. It's like their first day on a court.
Not everyone is going to get huge minutes every game. People on here pondering and from some clowns even suggesting that an important part of the program in Ava transfer is just stupid. I hope she has stronger resolve that you do. She will be a very good player but it is tough coming in as a post. AOG is a bit more accomplished finishing around the basket and hitting the ft jumper. Ava is more active on defense, running the floor and contesting for rebounds. There will be more minutes to go around next year, especially if Stuelke can expand her game.

I think your last sentence is the key. "If", and I just don't see Hannah becoming a perimeter player. I guess the hope is that she'll be healthy in the off season compared to missing time from surgery this year and that will make the difference. I'm skeptical in year 4 though. I don't think that this move started just months ago, and she still can't really shoot effectively from more then 4 ft.

I'd hope with Ava as well, but fans are learning to deal with the portal and the ease where players can leave and play right away....

Does she have more turnovers then ogrady?

I’m comparing her to Hannah at the 5. That’s our best lineup. O Grady has had some nice games this year and at this point we’re just fighting to get into the tournament. Good chance we lose our next 3. Centers in most cases (men and women) take a little longer to develop most of the time. I’m not saying O Grady is great but she’s experienced and guessing that is what Jan is looking for. Hopefully Heiden turns into a nice player but she’s also has a long ways to go.

I agree in bold above. But Jensen better get over this type of behavior or she will create animosity within the team. Like I mentioned earlier play your best players, period. The players know who the best players are. AOG is not better than AH, but all just my opinion which does not matter a whole lot in this topic.

Jan doesn’t appear to me to be playing anyone out of favoritism. The fact is the per 40 stats does not bare out our fans beliefs. These freshmen WILL be better eventually, but they aren’t now, no matter what our out loud message board fans think. The Srs have been spoon-fed by CC for four years and have no clue how to take charge & the new girls are raw, but with extreme talent, they are both making mistakes and regardless of what people continually try to say… The freshman throw the ball away more per 40 minutes than the other girls.

Jan isnt “screwing” this team up. They just don’t play the same all the time unfortunately. I doubt my boss (if I had one now) and my wife 😂 definitely wouldn’t allow me to blame them for my inconsistencies.

Lucy Olsen, to me, encapsulates this team. She’s a fifth year senior, and there are moments when she looks fantastic and that she might have a legitimate shot to play at the next level.

But she has had several games where she forces up stupid shots, can’t buy a basket, can’t shoot free throws, routinely throws the dumbest ass passes, and yet… This team still needs her to be on the floor

It is what it is…🤷‍♂️

I honestly don’t understand when exactly every single loss for our favorite sports team became coach malfeasance, but it takes away from the players accountability, and just trying to enjoy the game

In my opinion

I like this line up, but like Stremlow for KF. I think Stremlow can do a lot of the things Kylie can do, but understand why you've put her ahead of Stremlow....

McCabe getting near 20 minutes/game is too much. Unless she's drilling 3's (more often no than yes) she doesn't contribute much. Again, there is probably some loyalty to her for 'waiting her turn' but it's become clear why she wasn't getting minutes the last couple of years.

One thing that bugs me is our perimeter defense especially early in games. I noticed, as usual, when a pass goes inside, our perimeter defender drops back inside, leaving wide open 3s as it did last night. I would compare that to other team's defense and again last night, NW stayed out on on our guards. I don't know a lot, but I would like to see us start out getting in their faces and make them a little uncomfortable and run them off the 3 line.

Like others have posted, missed layups, and possibly Hanna's could be attributed to her first game back after a severe concussion, and were late in the game. A few dumb passes, and the TOs were down somewhat, but I would hope they could get in the 10 range.

I guess I look at Stremlow as doing pretty well for a freshman, and getting in foul trouble goes with it. I believe she's going to be a big part of this team going forward.

When it was all said and done, Iowa put up 85 last night. Correct a couple areas and it wouldn't have been close.

Seems an imperative that you can't give teams early confidence from the arc. If you can get them to miss those first attempts it goes a long way in setting the confidence the rest of the game.

I think Hannah said they weren't getting out with urgency early.

Get out on them early and get physical and stay on them. If you get called for a foul, good.

two bad passes on inbounds plays and at least one into the post. FWIW, CC had a fair number of TO's but still ended up with double digit assists most games.

I am beginning to wonder if she really is a post guru—. Catch, get ball quickly overhead, pivot and jumpshot ( no one is going to block that) or how easy it is to do a step back and fade shot.
