***Official Iowa vs. Creighton Thread***

So, bad defense, bad rebounding, careless with the ball (this wasn’t as bad as other times during the year), and a truckload of missed layups.

pretty much what we all knew would do this club in. SOOOO many times the ball would bounce off the rim and all 5 girls stood and watched it.

Indiana did the same thing as CU. Grab, hold and bump her, knowing that the refs are not going to call a foul every time.
At the outset, when Creighton was committing such egregious public muggings of Caitlin and other Hawkeyes every time down the floor, this is what the refs should have done, IMHO:

* Call an official timeout. Go to the CU bench and gather every CU player and coach and tell them something like this: "This is going to be a basketball game, not a rugby or wrestling match. If you continue to push, shove, grab, and hold, we will call a foul EVERY time you do it. If you commit 100 fouls, we'll call every one we see, but we're not going to tolerate this kind of outrageous physical play."

* Then go over and tell Lisa and the Iowa team that you told CU you're not going to put up with the thuggery.

Officials can do exactly that, and have on rare occasions over the years. But instead, they let CU get away with their thuggery early and often, and that was that. The basketball game was over, and the rugby match continued, except that Iowa doesn't play rugby.

If something isn't done by next season to stop rugby on the basketball court, in both men's and women's college basketball, the sport is going to be ruined. It's barely watchable now. IMHO, of course.

Basketball is now all about fouling on every possession, daring the refs to call a foul on every possession.

I guess that's how we need to play now, too.
I was at the game. Creighton was bigger, more physical and more athletic. Officiating seemed to be pretty bad. Iowa stood on offense a lot today. Defensively, Iowa was burned a number of times with trying to have one guard two and left them wide open for three.

Meh. It must've been worse when I wasn't watching. There were missed calls, sure, but not as many shooting fouls as people are trying to make it out to be and we did a poor job forcing shots up trying to draw/sell fouls.

Czinano let the defense bother her on her last several shots, instead of using her post fundamentals to make sure she had the best angle/position to finish.
Agree. It's called letting yourself be intimidated.

Boy, when up 4 at end, it was hopeful briefly. But Jensen got the 3 off in front of Czinani and both she and Clark missed layups at end. Hard to see for a team known for offense. Wondered how it sounded from announcers on TV. We’ll have company in losing, but as a 2 seed? Ouch. On to next year.

Make layups and it’s a 10 point win. Hell, rebound and play some defense and it’s a blowout.
I only watched the last five minutes or so and there were probably double digit missed layups between the two teams in that span. Tough to watch. I think Creighton had even more missed layups than the Hawks though, at least they had worse misses (with no defense around).

As I pointed out yesterday, the way the game is being played is being promoted by the talking heads. And as someone else followed up, no one wants to speak up about how it's being played and it's become accepted. Someone needs to speak up. Changes need to be made about how the game is being played.

Another problem is you have the blue blood coaches, who have the influence, enjoy how the game is being played as well. What they don't realize is they're ruining what college basketball is all about.

Bluder will hold another press conference this Fall explaining how the team has been focused like a laser the entire off-season on improving defense.... you're in for a treat just watch and see... can't wait for the season to get started.

By mid-December, Iowa will be flat-footed again as their opponent crashes the boards and when they lose a close one to some mid-major team that grabbed 17 ORBs, Iowa fans will be screaming for Bluder to recruit better shooters.

There will be a huge influx of talent with the recruiting class and Goodman will be back. I expect both the defense and rebounding to be much improved next season. McCabe and Stuelke both have the potential to be difference makers.

Jan can coach bigs offensively but does she have pedigree to coach rebounding?
Apparently not. When the shot goes up they all turn and watch if it goes in which most times it does. If it is off they don't get the rebound unless it bounces to them. This team does not go for the rebound. Just stand flat footed.

Mowins was on the call so it only made things worse.

Come on now. That's never gonna happen.
What pisses me off even more is that Bluder won't use her full allotment of schollies. She gets 15. Use them. Especially when year after year injuries or sickness get us down to 7 or 8 players. Like this year. Or the year we had to play Zion Sanders. Mind blowing. Okay, the rant is over.

Creighton missed two virtually contested layups in the final minute or so. I was sure that was all the Hawks would need to dodge the bullet.

The talking heads are promoting this style of play? Tell me who? Why would the blue blood coaches want to have the game played this way? I totally agree that the hand checking all over the court needs to stop in both the mens and womens game. I have said for years the NBA game is such a better product because of how it’s called. It’s why the games are so much higher scoring. True freedom of movement. That being said we have to get more athletic. We just have to.

I despite the way they call women's basketball. It's like a hockey game. If you think Creighton was bad, watch Texas or Baylor or South Carolina sometime. Something has to be done.
Unfortunately, those teams are at the top of the food chain. Complaints against them will be viewed as sour grapes. And counting on the NCAA to do something about the way the game is officiated today is a futile endeavor. I almost think we are going to need to see a riot on the floor to get anyone's attention.

I suspect that one reason is that -- subconsciously or otherwise -- there is a reluctance to give observers a chance to say the game is for sissies. Seriously. But I think it's gone too far. There's more contact than in the men's game, and that's bad enough. It was simply a scrum under both baskets today.

Yes, scrum would be a good analogy…..players knocked to the floor and not a call…….

One of the mistake I though Iowa made was not fouling at the end of the game. They had two fouls to give and they didn't use them. I know it would reset the shot clock but I think it changes things.

Need to hit the transfer portal and hope the recruiting is better. Two more years to take advantage of Clark at Iowa.
Portal does nothing. It’s obvious Bluder doesn’t emphasize rebounding or defense. Been an issue in years past. Don’t get beat in transition, and score points. Same philosophy as Fran. Works most of the time, it don’t work In the dance.

It's like watching this good awful ISU team play. Match up with Pissconsin is horrible to watch. Mug everyone, all the time.

Meanwhile Iowa has Cizano in guarding the ball to give fouls. Let’s hope it doesn’t go to OT and we need those fouls
I thought that was strange. Iowa obviously in a fouling situation. Pull your slower center and put in your quickest player off the bench, Much better chance for a steal and if not they can foul with less time coming off the clock.
