*****Official Northern Illinois at IOWA Game Thread*****

App State just rammed it down Penn State throat and they just bent over and took it.

Have to appreciate ferentz. He is a respected coach that loves this players and school. He can be frustrating at times but you can't fault him for caring about his team.

Pleasantly surprised by how this team responded in the 2nd half.
I think the coaches saw what we all saw in the 1st few minutes of the 1st QTR. Benched a few of the players not producing after half. Unfortunately, in my mind they brought some of them back to give away the shutout. Great W

Need to get people snaps, as Iowa will need some of those guys to play real football at some point this year. There will be more sorting of guys here early in the season based on how they play.

Jones starting to play and hit. That is good. Maybe too amped at beginning.
We know that Jones can lay the wood. The question is, can he read his keys, and then move to the correct position instinctively. This is what Jewell did so well. He also must make the correct calls and get his teammates in the right position, as the Mike. First half was a rough start for Amani.

Seemed to me the story of the game was the defense. We gave up a lot of those Read/Option runs up the middle to start the game, but after Hockaday replaced Jones, the defense played really well.

Other things of note:
1) I think Groeneweg won his PR job today. Will he get a chance at KR? Really impressed at how he made positive yards each time.
2) Hockaday won the MLB job.
3) I was so excited when B Smith got to campus ... but I don’t see a D1 WR talent there. He didn’t reall “compete” for the ball when he had a chance. Made a few nice blocks though.
4). Saw a lot of different OL configurations and several of them included BOTH of the Paulsen boys.
5) That drop by Fant on that beautiful throw by Stanley - he drops out of AA contention IMHO. Not to mention the 2 penalties back-to-back. Just not ready to play today. We need him to get right. Immediately.
6). Well done, Rastetter! The punt block was not on him.
7) Toren Young gets offensive player of the game. He broke it open.
8) my biggest beef with BF today was in the first half on our 4th down try. Yuck. Why not call a timeout? It was late in the 2nd quarter and we had all 3 still available. The lack of creativity on that play was so predictable. Every person in the stadium knew what was going to happen. Just maddening.
9) Kudos to the DBs. I will take Chuck Long’s word for it at how they were really blanketing the NIU WRs. Can’t see it on TV, but their QB never seemed to have anywhere to go.
