Ogundele

huh. didnt he have a health condition that complicated his ability to play?
He did have a health condition. However, he let himself get severely out of shape. Some of that "might" be related to his health condition. But not entirely. Otherwise he simply wouldn't be playing.

The beginning of last season he was significantly slimmer. That was after the medical condition was mentioned... So, one can decipher that as laziness, and lack of motivation...

Sucks as if Josh O were in decent shape, he would be a player.

Odd that Mulvey did not see the court until around 5 minutes left. Lots of positives from the game and feeding the post was not a point of emphasis given the hot perimeter shooting. It will be interesting to see how Fran adjusts against teams with legit post players when Rebraca sits / gets into foul trouble. Josh made baskets turning over both shoulders last night which is a marked improvement from last year but it was also against Truman State.

It would appear to me that a message is being sent/given to Mulvey. My wild guess, since it’s so early, is that we aren’t pleased with the work/effort you’re putting in. Get after it now or you will hardly see the floor even in the exhibition….

That’s just an assumption (and you know what they say). It could be that he’s had to miss some practice time or there might be something else going on…..

Yeah … I’m wondering the same. I keep thinking about what he said over the summer:
“In the past year, I wasn’t getting in the gym enough,” Mulvey said. “I was just coming to practice and only staying after a little bit, if any at all. And then the only time I would get in the gym by myself was to go shoot and it wasn’t with a coach to get better at skills, and it wasn’t like do better at lifting. It was just to go shoot and kind of just do stuff on my own. … I was a freshman, but I should have been taking it more seriously and I should have treated it more like a job and less like something I was doing for fun.”

Perhaps he is having trouble stepping up his effort level?

Yeah not too much to glean from playing Truman State other than it's good to see the team. There is a reason Iowa was in the portal hard for bigs in the off-season. No reason to sugarcoat it. Iowa can still have a very good team, it will just have to hope Rebraca and Murray don't get in a ton of foul trouble. Rebounding and interior defense will be a challenge, but on the flip side opponents will have a very hard time defending Iowa.

I am guessing it all comes down to what's going on in practice. It appears, based on who entered the game and when, that Josh has been practicing better than Mulvey. And the fact that Mulvey did not make a game appearance until 5 minutes were left in the game kinda indicates they don't plan on playing him much, except in mop up duties. Hopefully that changes, because we could use a reliable 7 footer in there rebounding the ball.

Mulvey is behind Josh. There was no "message." He's just behind Josh, and I'm not even sure Josh gets regular minutes.
So, I didn't get to see the game....but didn't EVERY other scholarship player (except Ulis and we know what message he was getting) play before Riley. Maybe even Kingsbury got in the game before him?

Both freshman guards played before Riley....and the post is probably where we have the least amount of depth.

The game was WAY out of hand, essentially over, well before Riley got any minutes.......only a guess, but I think he knows why and it wasn't just because he's behind Josh O....

Josh has done size and skill that you can’t replicate. I think we will see a lot of him against bigger teams. He will have a role on this team.
That's where his biggest value will be - bodying up against Edey and Dickinson and those types of players. Other than that, I don't expect much from him. I am sure in games where Iowa doesn't need his size/fouls, they will create match-up problems in the front court with smaller, more athletic line-ups. I hope he or Mulvey surprise but not counting on them for much.

I can see there being games where Josh gets 10-15 minutes and other games he doesn't play. And yes, he looks to be ahead of Riley, maybe even significantly.

Not good. His defensive iq is bad. Plays with no force at all. He got schooled multiple time tonight.

Josh is going to struggle defensively against smaller, quicker players and play better against guys where he can bang or lean on. Which is why he'll play quite a bit against teams with a big C and not as much or not at all against teams without a traditional big.

Yep, Iowa will have trouble against some teams due to their frontcourt (defending/rebounding) but will also cause issues against some teams with their array of offensive talent and multi-skilled players in the front court.

No reason to think that if Iowa brings the defensive intensity and rebound as a team like they did the last 15 or so games of the year, that they can have a similar team to last year.

The one thing I will say is that Fran has never had a Guard like Perkins with his defensive intensity, tenaciousness, and combo Guard skills. And he seems to only have gained in confidence since last year. He seems like the type of combo Guard that Siena fans were saying Fran loved and had his last few years on those strong Siena teams and that for whatever reason, Fran hasn't been able to get until Perkins.

Great to see Perkins playing with so much confidence. Good athleticism, so strong, and high basketball IQ. Once he started making some mid-range jumpers and hitting a few 3's last year, he was really hard to guard.

This is also an issue imo with Fran in that he doesn't really value defense. He sees them as lost points on the offensive end where they might help you win games on the other end, even if it is a combined 20 minutes a game.

I expected him to have a really good year - and yes I know this was just an exhibition against Truman St - but maybe I even underestimated how good year he will end up having. It seems like that once he was put in the starting line-up and let loose, he has just continued to flourish and get better. And even if he doesn't score, he can literally do everything else on the floor, which is so valuable to a team like Iowa who always has guys who can score but might be lacking in some other areas.

Those minutes depend on the matchup. Purdue, Rutgers, etc he'll find minutes. Mulvey either redshirts or transfers imo.

I'd like to see more of Ulis/Bowen teamed with Perkins. To go with Iowa's length.

I am legitimately interested in hearing from you exactly what skill(s) Josh has other than his size? He doesn't shoot or pass the ball all that well. He is often flat footed when a rebound is near. Yes, he can body up against a bigger post player. He can block the occasional shot. He just does not appear to have much instinct and is slow to react to what is going on around him. Starting the game late in life is not an excuse when you only have 4/5 years that matters - for Iowa basketball anyway.

Rebounding, shot blocking, screening, good hands. You say he is “slow to react”, can you be more specific? Seems like a lot of people just want to hate on him because he is overweight and they are convinced he is lazy. I remember people complaining about Brad Lohaus and Les Jepsen being goofy and uncoordinated. It just takes big guys longer to develop.

Size is what he has and will be valuable in certain situations against certain teams (like Purdue in the Big Ten Tourney). Expecting anything more from him will probably lead to a let down. Against smaller, athletic teams, I'd be shocked if he played much unless it is a blowout.
