Oh well silly me, now the tariffs make sense to me

I’m pulling from middle school civics memories here, so I could be way off…

Wasn’t the initial goal of tariffs to get Americans to buy American-made goods?

For these tarriffs to work, aren’t we also going to need a MAJOR increase in American manufacturing?

IMO, that is 100% the issue here. If protectionist tariffs were being placed on goods that compete with US manufacturers goods with the intent of longterm implementation, I'd actually be on board. But, they're not.

In 1828, Andrew Jackson imposed tariffs to benefit Northern manufacturers which hurt the South. The South rebelled against the tariffs, as South Carolina came up with Nullification in response.

That's the plan.

The notion that I’m “rooting against the US” is absurd. There is a phrase Dan Carlin has said many times on his history pods, the most humane way to wage war is to get it over quickly. I’m paraphrasing there but that’s the gist.

Let me ask the pro tariffs people this question: What’s the best and worst case scenarios?

IMO the best case scenario is that we make a bit more money in the very short term. Canada and Mexico are part of a world market. There will be other deals to be had with other countries. Last time we put tariffs on China, they just started buying their pigs from Russia. Then the Ag economy tanked. Then we had to bail out the farmers. We will have done this at the expense of a good working relationship with Mexico and Canada. I think in conflicts, having allies is a force multiplier. If we are headed to some kind of global conflict with Russia, China, or Iran, I want all of our allies by our side. They might just sit it out.

The worst case scenarios are truly awful. There have been ignorant people in this thread that Mexico is “doing nothing” about the drug trade. That’s just patently false. They are doing a lot, but it’s a big problem, as evidenced by the fact that we can’t control it at all within our own borders. Mexico has spent a lot of blood and a lot of money fighting the war to fuel the US appetite for illicit drugs. They did it partially because of a good working relationship and a good trade relationship. If that deal is off the table, they lose a lot of motivation to prosecute the drug war within their borders. Now, we have US military operations in a sovereign nation putting American lives at risk. I could see this activating cartels within the US to deploy terrorist tactics – car bombs, etc. Currently the cartels try to avoid American contact. If they can’t avoid it, there is no reason to suggest they would shy away from guerrilla tactics on American soil.

It is NOT 1910 any more. Post WW2, the world has moved to a “global economic system” featuring the world producing products and shipping them around the world duty free (the goal). As with any system, there are flaws (re: COVID pandemic) but for the most part, this global system works.
In America, the tariff methodology can only work via EO and then by-passing key elements of our Constitution.

The MIB supporting the tariffs are the ones against America.

This is going to be a disaster. Trump has lost his mind.

Imagine voting for this dunce

What happened to the idea that people should be able to choose whether or not to take drugs. Freedom, you know.

In a nation where we're free to drink, smoke pot, eat bad food, etc., why single out fentanyl?

Who are we to interfere with survival of the fittest?

BUT, his yo yo ing of position doesn't create confidence in the market to invest / create / augment the manufacturing.

Correct. Wonder who will do all of that work.

This is all so ****ing dumb.

Ya think?
The DOW is down -1% the first 20 mins of the session. The business community is rallying to tariffs! ;)
Interestingly, the Hang Seng only dipped a little last night. Brazil also seems relatively unaffected. Whereas S.Korea is getting hammered.

I'm too lazy to look up all the BRICS nations, but India is only down a half percent, whereas Australia is down 2%.

The sense I'm getting is that this is hurting our friends more than our foes. Then again, it's early days....

We'll just magically build new factories and produce all the goods we want.

Gold is up 1.24% ($35.10).

Interesting that some people seem to be running to the DOW (down less than S&P or NASDAQ) and gold (up about the same as the DOW is down).

So, you guys actually think the federal gov’t “owes” you all the “details” on their tariff strategies? 😳
I think we deserve an explanation considering nearly every expert on global and US trade policy says this is likely to be disastrous. Not all of us have sworn allegiance and ignorant faith in the Idiot In Chief’s bizarre strategies.

Rooting for stupidity. Bold strategy. But what can we expect from you low intellect magats.
Breaking news…now a one month pause on the Mexican tariffs as Mexico has agreed to put 10,000 of their troops on their northern border to help stop the flow of migrants/drugs into our country. 🤔

And magats are still nothing but stupid nazis. And the sooner their burning in hell, the better for America.

No, it's incredibly vague. Exactly how many people are coming across the border from Canada? What number does he want to see? Same with fentanyl.

Same with Mexico. Somebody needs to be able to state exactly what the expectations are.

And balance out their trade? What? Your goal isn't to have balanced trade with everyone -- it's to optimize trade for your country.
43 pounds of fentanyl were seized at the US-Canada border in 2024 according to an article I read in the Wall Street journal this morning. That can fit in 1 duffel bag.

It’s a disengenuous and non-factual excuse by Trump. BAU.

I think they all do but you have to admit, the US has taken the short end of the stick more than any other country. We are generous to a fault. Our fault.
This is really the biggest factor coupled with the border issues on both sides. The US has gotten taken advantage of for far too long and now you have someone that wants to balance the scales.
