ISU in the rear view mirror. Have a week to get ready. What do you guys know about Cincy? Big game to set up a potential 10-3 going into January. I know absolute jack about them this year. Good matchup with us?? Thanks in advance for the education!

I know they lost a lot. They are not very good so far this year. This is a game we have a good chance of winning. I believe they are 6-4 having just lost to Xavier by 7. at home.

i think they are going to get beat down like they're some vikings!

that's all I know though :D

Jarron Cumberland vs Cook was a great matchup in the NCAAT last year. I believe he's fighting through an injury and has been a shell of himself.

It will be interesting to see our starters if we are JBOless. I could see Kriener with Conner at the point or Joe T at the point if we go 4 guards.

I won’t be surprised if both of the above are used at times depending on the match-ups we face. The rubber will meet the road when we sub and how we go about closing out games.

I’m basically looking at going only 7 deep until injuries or fouls become an issue. It’s likely to be a learning year, but we have some really nice pieces that should set up next year for a solid season.

An experienced Joe T, J Bo, and Ulis will give us great depth at PG. Joe W, CJF, Conner, Patrick, Perry, and the Murray twins will make the 2/3/4 loaded with options. Luka, Nunge, Cordell, and the new big (I’m old and forget) will provide what’s needed even if teams go 2 bigs against us. We may need to endure the pain this year, but there’s light at the end of the tunnel.

We probably aren’t final 4 tough, but definitely should be upper B1G 10.

Possibly first game without JBO, so it will be a learning experience for the Hawks. It will depend a great deal on how his replacement plays IMO. Tough game to start JBOless.
Technically not the first game without him, he didn’t play an earlier game this year so he could leave his shoes at ISU after the beat down.

Looks like not a very good shooting team. 31% from 3 and 66% FT's. Zone should do the trick.

I know I hate cincy... freaky Huggins teams let me down so many times in March madness.

Yeah, Nick Van Exel, Danny Fortson, Kenyon Martin.... He certainly had some bad dudes over the years.

This Cincinnati team did lose a lot and not the least was their coach Cronin. He did a great job there. The Bearcats still have talent and are very capable. Iowa will need to play well, but advantage Iowa imo, simple because Iowa is hard to guard right now. Garza is a mismatch for every team and it sets up Iowa's perimeter shooters. Should be a good game.

Cincy always seems to have quality players, who play tough defense and rebound. I haven't seen them this year, so I don't know much about the current team, except they had a lot of turnover, as noted. HS basketball in the Cincy area always produces a lot of good D1 players. Glad we got one of the best two years ago (CJF).

They've got a new coach, so I don't think they're emphasizing defense as much as Cronin used to. Either that or their personnel losses took a bigger toll than expected.

They were on the road. Cinci is decent, and Cumberland is a stud. It would be a good win.

true, technically not first game without JBO, but is for the rest of season.

Can't happen. Still have to get mins to others as well.
Evelyn has done a better job of late and if he plays under control(JT too)
they can fill the void for the most part. They will need to get some 3's to drop.

I meant he should get the same, if not more, minutes than JBo is currently getting. Evelyn's minutes will probably need to go up a little, but I'd rather see more across the board for the top 5 guys.

What sucks most about JBo being out is that Connor won't be able to play the 3 or 4 as much and he was doing a really great job in those roles. Who will pick it up at the 3 and 4 slots with Connor less available for minutes there?

I think see more Evelyn at point. Which I’m good with. But I’m guessing Connor will be handling the ball if we have a late lead.

Well, I guess thats true, IF he decides to sit. Nothing has been announced yet, and I wouldn't be surprised either way. Didn't now until yesterday that Kreiner was his best friend on the team. He may want to graduate with him. I know he's torn because he still thinks he can help this team in spurts, in key situations. We'll know next week......

Yes, now would be the time for Evelyn to step it up. It's not as if there's a next year for him. This is his finale.
If he gives good D, sound ballhandling, reasonable ball distribution, minimizes turnovers that's what he can bring. In addition to that if he can at least provide occasional offense at 5 or so ppg clip that would make him a solid overall contributor.

Yeah, and I think EB will get more comfortable with his role as the season goes on. He's essentially a rookie in Iowa's system, but he's got the potential to be a contributor, someone who can fill a role and play solid D as the season goes on. The key is the next couple of weeks for him if he has increased minutes and a more focused role on the perimeter. That might free up Connor to play the 4 more in the first half and then, like you said, handle the ball more in crunch time to control pace, keep the flow of the game in Iowa's favor.

Lost to Colgate at home tonight.

I saw that, IA has absolutely no business losing to Cinn. I think IA wins handily. Only worrisome item is the first game without JBo might be unsettling and may require some adjustment.

we need to stop the narrative that Connor being good has anything to do with the position he is playing on offense.

No, I don't mean Connor is not good when he's not playing the 3 or 4. He's been good all around. My point is that iowa isn't as good when he isn't playing the 3 or 4. In other words, Iowa doesn't have a reliable 4 right now outside of Connor.

This is the head scratcher for me, Evelyn has been playing with the jitters since the start. It’s almost as if he is constantly thinking how this is the last year of his playing days and he’s terrified he won’t make an impact.
I’ve been praying for him to calm himself and find his role on this team. It’s not like he hasn’t contributed but stat wise it didn’t really show. Imagine if he even starts adding anything more substantial stat wise and becoming more of a factor other teams have to game-plan also.
I’m cheering for him to go out with a bang, he just needs to find his role and have a little fun. Maybe a few minutes at the one will shake something loose.

Good post

Oh, not only did they lose at home to Colgate, but they invented a new way to do it. :)

That is mind boggling. The coach said he didn't know what the score was. Apparently he thought they were ahead? Behind? It makes even less sense when they're anything but tied.

They turn the ball over a lot (16 a game) and are weak free throw shooting (66%), and hopefully this one comes down to discipline and we never find ourselves far behind.

Hmmm. I think it is a valid argument that Connor is playing as well as he is at least in part due to his reduced burden of being a primary lead guard. He shines as a utility guy. With Joe T and Bohannon and even CJF able to assume more of that ballhandling responsibility, Connor can be more effective as a generalist.

I’m open to this type of opinion.
