Okie State vs Minny...

The Cowboys are dominating Minnesota tonight. Not a single win so far for the Gophers.

Jake Short has got to be one of the most disappointing recruits in a long time. No offense to the kid, but for being ranked #1 at his weight in HS he has not been able to do much of anything in college.

Add Bobby Steveson to your all disappointing team.

Not the best offical in my opinion but gophers look bad real bad..
.
Agreed. Hagery is not a good official. I believe he is out of MO so that is why he probably gets invited to ref at OSU so often. He was absolutely awful at the Penn State/OSU dual last year and wasn't even aware of leg riding rules in college.

Minnesota is bad. They have two good but flawed wrestlers at 125/133 and 141 is a coin flip to AA. That's about it

I wouldn't be so quick to pass judgement on Minny being awful. The Hawks only have Sorenson and Kemmerer as "locks" to AA if they don't pull shirts. Marinelli is a coin flip at this point as is Stoll at heavy. I don't see any other positives in our lineup either outside of these four guys atm..

It's not that they got smoked... it's HOW they got smoked! OSU got the first td in every, single match. Make no mistake about it... the Gophs have a very good class coming in, but we know one class isn't enough to fix that mess. It's what happens in next years' class that will determine if Eggum was the right guy.

Plus...the Cowpokes always look sluggish early in the season so that wide margin of score was unreal.

Gophs will improve because you can't get much worse.

But I'm still skeptical about Eggum. He got Lil McKee and younger Steveson because their brothers were already in the program. Now Lee was the big catch to me. But is he the start of out of State recruiting success or was he an aberration?

Minny should always clean up in State... they're the only D-1 program.

Anyway, my prediction from a year ago still stands... Iowa won't lose a dual with the Gophs for the entire career of Gable Steveson.

The kid has no offense. Looks to score off his opponents shot or mistake. That doesn't usually translate into being a very good college wrestler. But he has been a huge disappointment.

Minnesota guy here. That was brutal. Not here to make excuses for my team, but I'm holding out hope. Especially hoping the coaches really work hard on slide-by defense this week...

Lizak's comeback, for our only win, was really impressive.

Should have been a shutout. Lizak's top game was the only thing saved the Gophers. Picc didn't follow the plan on bottom. I actually think he should have chosen top for the second instead of deferring, ridden him hard, maybe gotten a couple more turns.

If you don't see any other positives in our lineup you are blind.

Picc had the choice and deferred I believe. I think if given the choice with the backpack in the 2nd period, the elite guys should go neutral and hope to gas him. Picc was having his way with him it was a nice win by Lizak but the only wrestler that showed a lot of fight was your 33. Very impressed by him...always a fun guy to watch win or lose.

Read on Gophs forum that Sanders told Lizard to go bottom in second period and got overruled by Eggs. Eggs made the right call, but I'm betting that made for an awkward moment between the coaching staff.
Sanders was a decent wrestler, but maybe coaching isn't his life calling :p

A good friend from back over here said the same exact thing last night

3 Gophers walked into a slide by as soon as they initiated collar ties to start matches. 2 of them got hit with it repeatedly.

Officiating at 184 was horrendous. Still got it wrong when given a chance to review.

That Lizak match really highlighted the bad decision to not choose top in the NCAA finals. Picc needed to lay flat on his face and belly the last minute of the second period. He could afford the stall calls with that lead. At this point I have Lizak as the favorite in March. He turns everybody.

The Gophers will be ok. Barring injury they finish as good or better than last year.

He's a very young coach. It was a learning experience for him to be sure. And yes, he was a decent 4x AA.

I put that on Eggs, not Sanders, for a couple reasons.

1. It should be clearly defined who is making that call. Is Sanders coaching Lizak since he is the one working with him on a day to day basis? Or, does the choice always come down to what Eggs wants? Either way, that expectation should be set way before the dual starts.
2. Additionally, shouldn't there be a gameplan in place? Is the choice really that questionable? Again, Eggs should have a gameplan that the athlete and assistant coaches know.

Would you say he came up a little SHORT of his expectations?

My exact thoughts on everything you said.
So there are two possible explanations. ..
A. Eggs and Sanders had a plan, but Gophs were looking at a likely shotout, so Eggs wants to avoid an embarrassing score. or
B. Eggs trying to save face and throws Sanders under the bus.
Either way...that staff has done very little with the current roster and looks woefully unprepared under the lights.

Picc did defer and that was a stupid mistake. He should have taken it too him from neutral in the second period and built an even bigger lead.

Speaking of 125/133, I'm sure it's happened, however I don't recall the last time we go out 0 for 2 at those weights to start a dual.

Hence the rankings:
6 Minnesota
7 Iowa

Sanders placed higher than Mc D his senior year? Kind of decent. Go fall on your little penis pump :)

Too bad they wasted roster space on kids that got removed from the program. Bad taste in recruiting, but that has been fixed.
