OL next year?

I didn’t know that about Logan Jones. He’s listed as a senior but maybe he can do something similar to Higgins/Jackson/Castro/etc and come back for one last year, especially if we can get him some NIL money.
Higgins didn’t redshirt as a frosh and used his free Covid 5th year. Castro used his for 6th. Jackson got his extra year because of his last at UVA after tragedy where teammates killed granted a free year to those UVA guys. No more Covid so we don’t have to deal with the confusion on if certain seniors have any eligibility left or not. jones is gone with no more eligibility

That’s too bad. So we’ll be breaking in a number of new players on OL next year.

I bet we see at least 2 transfers signed on the OL but in the past it feels like kind of a coin flip on if those guys end up contributing or not. Like I know we signed at least one last offseason and I would have to look it up to even remember the name because I haven’t seen him out there.

My assumption re: OL transfers … is KF is a “line guy,” so he is probably not crazy about 1-year plug and play … as Iowa likes to “develop” its linemen …

If you go off of the 2 Deep for this year, this is what it will look like in the spring next year:

LT Dotzler
Lauck
LG Stephens
Leighton Jones
C Pieper
Myslinski
RG Myslinski
RT Dunker

The only other player returning next year who has game experience in 2024 is Jeremy Chaplin.

There are a lot of young options for filling out the 2-deep
Kale Krogh
Cade Borud
Will Nolan
Josh Janoski
Brody McCaslin
Cannon Leonard
Cody Fox

No Proctor???

It is the portal era, but I don't think that there will be a lot of OL added from the portal if Stephens, Pieper, and Dunker are back. That is a good nucleus, and players/staff have spoken well of the young OL in the program.

Always good to bring in some experience, if it's an upgrade.

Next year is the last season for covid bonus years. I don't know if any of the current lineman qualify for it but I'm fairly certain Wetjen could come back if he wanted to.

I agree with the thought. But I don't think that Iowa is going to be in a position to bring in the elite transfers. Iowa will not be perceived to be as good next year. Iowa will be young on defense, losing the linebacker corps, as well as Black, Schulte, and Harris. Iowa will lose Kaleb Johnson, Lachey, Richman, Jones, and Colby on offense. So I don't think that Iowa will be expected to compete for one of the top spots in the conference. The last couple of years, Iowa has been able to get some highly regarded transfers on offense because the defense was deep and elite.

So I expect that next year will be something of a youth movement, where Iowa will surprise people if its young players are ahead of schedule. Depending on how that goes, 2026 could be a year where Iowa tries to make a splash in the free agent market.

I read that Nick DeJong is going to apply for a 7th year of eligibility, invoking the "Tommy Boy" rule.

I know the coaches are happy about our second string linemen.

They looked damn good on that last drive to get Jaz his td.

The last few years were tough due to attrition and the need to play young guys. Those guys took their lumps but the experience has paid off as last night was the most impressive line play I've seen in...I can't remember.

We've recruited well, guys have stayed and been able to work, develop, and mature. I don't think the drop off will be as bad as some fear.

Amazing how well the line looks with a true mobile QB. It's not a coincidence.

Cody Fox did play in one game this year. The time was minimal, but that is a positive sign for a true freshman OL.
I think that might have been a mistake by the person compiling the participation report. I went back and watched that game again and didn’t see him in there on the OL.
