OL next year?

You have a good base with Pieper, Stephans, and Dunker...all of which have been very good this year when healthy. Pieper is going to be VERY GOOD.
a LT transfer would be a huge addition. Add Kasper at WR, and I'm really beginning to like the lineup.

Well isn't Utah's QB taking maybe an 8th year?

I think his comment was more about not wanting to see DeJong out there anymore, hoping that we have someone better to fill the spot instead.

I have no idea what the young guys look like in practice, but if we only have 3 starters back as it is then getting another guy like DeJong that has played a ton would have to be a good thing I would think.

We need two assuming anyone listed as a senior doesn't come back.
LT-?
LG-Stephens
C-Pieper
RG-?
RT-Dunker

Lauck, Dotzler, Fox, Myslinski, L Jones are young up and comers
Dunker is going to test the NFL waters. Depends of the feedback he gets.

That’s too bad. So we’ll be breaking in a number of new players on OL next year.

I bet we see at least 2 transfers signed on the OL but in the past it feels like kind of a coin flip on if those guys end up contributing or not. Like I know we signed at least one last offseason and I would have to look it up to even remember the name because I haven’t seen him out there.
Portal Olinemen might look more kindly at Iowa since we will have several starters leaving and since the run game has taken off. Moulton and Jazz right now will make very good replacements for Kaleb.

I agree, but he better be 290-295 by next season. I’m pretty sure he is above 275 already.

My assumption re: OL transfers … is KF is a “line guy,” so he is probably not crazy about 1-year plug and play … as Iowa likes to “develop” its linemen …
Not true as I believe KF has brought in at least two and maybe three OL who had only one year to play.

Dunker seems to be a guy that actually enjoys school. I see him staying for the next year. He also has bigger plans for advanced degree so finishing his degree seems important.

How is Kasper doing at Oregon ? Actually I like the wide receivers we will have coming back, with a couple of talented young guys who haven’t played yet waiting in the wings.
I see Kasper has only 1 reception this season.

KF occasionally brings in an OL guy from portal, which is not a lot when you need to go 8-9 deep at OL. The original point was valid, KF prefers developing in house. Sure he'll take a super star like Kadyn if he drops in his lap. Without a lot of NIL money, I don't think KF can go shopping with $$. The last "big" portal get on OL that I remember was a guy that got beat out at tackle at Indiana and came to Iowa to play OT and washed out at OT at Iowa also.

I’d love to see Elsbury use his Covid year. I think he could be a great starter at guard or center next year.
I have no idea if this is a possibility or not, but having Elsbury next year would be better than any new recruit or portal transfer we would get. He is a rock-solid interior lineman. His stepping in for Logan and Beau last season while they were injured was huge, and one of the underrated reasons Iowa somehow pulled out 10 wins.

LOL. I’d hardly say Coy Cronk from Indiana “washed out” at Iowa. He started 2 games at Iowa before an injury ended his season. He entered the NFL draft at the end of that season and made the Packers roster. I know he was later waived for a non football injury and not sure if he is still playing. You might consider Rusty Feth a “big” portal get also at OL. Now if you wanted to call Saginaw Valley State Tackle Daijon Parker a “wash out” you’d get no argument from me.

Yeah, he hasn't seen the field much this year, and it doesn't look like it's going to get easier for him to see the field.
His dad posted that Kyler is injured and will redshirt this season. Also, Oregon is recruiting the younger brother - he visited for the Ohio St game. Here is the post. I know Kevin still bleeds black & gold and loves Kirk, but it doesn’t seem likely to me we will see either of his sons here. I would love to be wrong about that though…

He may not end up at Iowa, but I would be surprised if he is there next year. That depth chart already shows Lowe above Holden, not sure if there is a reason given the stats. Braylon is a classs of 2027 kid, so I don't think he will have much to do with Kyler.

yes i would rather not go after high-star recruits out of hs who went to strong programs but haven't produced anything. much rather find players who have produced great results at lower levels. zero interest from me for getting kasper

Get rid of Gill now!!

Yep....total miss by me.

LT - Lauck
LG - Stephens
C - Pieper
RG - Leighton Jones
RT - Dunker

That's a pretty decent OL
Yeah ... I hope we can retain Dunker.

Could be interesting about the new(er) faces on the OL. I'd say that Dunker, Stephens, and Pieper are the no-brainers. After that, given Borud's prior starting experience at North Dakota ... that could help him if he can leverage that experience. Lauck, Dotzler, Myslinski, and Leighton Jones all could vie for snaps. I'm curious about Cody Fox too ... although he's still young, so it will be interesting to track his development.

I recall he has taken 5 OL out of the portal which for KF is quite a bit. Might be the most at any position.

I imagine that some of it is also linked to prior experience with transfers. I'm sure that Kirk is very thankful looking back at a guy like Marshall Yanda ... so he sees the value that a guy like that can bring. However, as always with Kirk ... I imagine that it's always about very targeted usage of the portal in order to help our overall roster-depth.

I like this problem of having multiple capable bodies to choose from rather than what it was for the last 3-4 years prior where we had 5 guards or we couldn't find much in the way of capable bodies outside of 1 or 2 guys.

Don't they have to come to Kinnick in 2025?
