One noticeable thing about Cade McNamara….

First, Vander Zee ran the wrong route & Cade probably didn't even know he was there while he was being smothered by two defensive linemen. He woefully underthrew Lachey.

Second, Vander Zee didn't "high point" the ball up and over the defender. He practically reached over the DB and caught it before it hit the defender in the head.

Third, it's a very low percentage throw off his back foot & into traffic. If the ball gets picked off Iowa misses a scoring opportunity.

Lastly, I'd love to see designed plays to get Vander Zee in isolation situations to out jump shorter DB's in the red zone. I can see many corner end zone throws to Reese this year. That play was definitely not an iso.
Let's be honest, we got lucky on this one. It was not a good throw. A wounded duck like that gets picked off most of the time. Vander Zee made a great heads up play to grab it. As you say designed plays like that for VZ would be great. This wasn't one of those.

Why would you figure a DB will catch that ball the majority of times versus a WR?

Lots of successful big yardage plays are jump balls/hail Mary's. A few years ago Minnesota beat us throwing jump balls all afternoon.

Reese kind of stated he didn’t run the correct route and that was apparent with three Iowa players in the vicinity of where Reese caught the ball.

Yeah, he stated in the post-game interview that Cade had changed the play, then changed it again, and Reese was confused as to where he should be. He ran to the wrong place, but fortunately made the grab.
