open practice

Why did you ask me and why should I answer? It has nothing to do with my comment.

What was impressive? He went 6-5 including a loss to some guy named Nick Palumbo. Only two of his wins were by bonus despite only wrestling a few guys decent or better.
I was impressed with the fact that he wrestled up a weight at 157 and narrowly lost to Coleman from Purdue. He also beat Echemendia and Yant of UNI. I like Voinovich, but I don’t think he’s heads and shoulders above Rathjen right now. Realistically Victor was 6th at B12s. (He went 1-3 and 3 of his matches were vs. non-AAs) He had a good win over Jaden Abas at NCAAs(which is his best win to date). They had similar close losses to Max Murin. I think Victor probably has the higher pedigree and I’m glad he’s a Hawk, but I’m not ready to crown the kid who had 13 losses last season as our definitive starter. I think it’ll be a dog fight between those two.

Care to explain what’s impressive about beating Yant, a sub-.500 UNI backup?

Sure, Caleb is a 149lber who wrestled up at 157. I’m of the opinion that when athletes can wrestle their ideal weight, they tend to perform better. eg Nelson Brands was much better at 174 than at 184. I certainly haven’t seen anything from Voinovich that tells me he’s far and away better than Caleb.

Never before has anyone been so impressed with a win over a 3rd string, sub-.500 wrestler from UNI.

All that said, I have no real disagreement with your final sentence.

I doubt anyone is impressed with either Voinovich or Rathjen right now. Collectively they are 1-13 vs. top-20 opponents. (Voinovich has a win over #20 Abas.)

But since we are only comparing the two, I don't think it's a stretch to say either guy could beat the other at 149.

I agree it could go either way, but I'd give a bit of a lean towards Voinovich. He's a more natural 149, with a higher ceiling and is probably a little more committed to wrestling.

I like Voinovich's skillset, but other than that not much to differentiate them.

Max went 17-10 his rsfr year, then 16-3 the following year before covid ended it.
Voinivich 17-13 his rsfr year.
It's not far fetched to set VV could see a similar jump to Max.
He was a top 20 recruit if I recall so the skill set is there.

One guy finished about .500 while wrestling lame opens and largely against backups. The other guy won two matches at the NCAAs.

Things change and they don’t wrestle matches on paper but there’s a difference.
He won a dec over somebody from George Mason (didn’t realize they still had a team) then had a good win in SV over Abas. Let’s pump the brakes on blowing him just yet.

I thought the scuttlebutt from this summer was that Rathjen has some major issues "off the mat" that will jeopardize his chances to wrestle?
Is he now "out of the doghouse"?

Vince showed him the way out.

You neglected to mention these were NCAA qualifiers. Rathjen didn't have wins like that. He was sliding past lesser guys.

But hey, he's a talented guy and this year is a new year. And it isn't like V was dominant.

To those who don’t like me or have a problem with what I post on here I guess I am a positive person who looks at things a little differently than most. I don’t claim to be all knowing sorry if I come off that way. If we have different opinions that’s fine. I am just a fan with a few friends close to the program and maybe I say to much sometimes but I’ll respectfully disagree with those who do not believe in the middle Ferrari being a very special talent.

I agree with you. I should have clarified that I meant in terms of NCAA scoring. I would be surprised if either were able to score a point or two, but if I had to bet an either doing it, I wouldn't hesitate to choose Voinovich.

Never been that high on Rathjen. He's been a guy who's "a year away" from a breakout season according to people, but it never comes.

and possibly because of a lack of commitment to living the right kind of lifestyle outside of the season. Hopefully the young man turns things around and totally commits himself to the right lifestyle year round and makes a big jump.

spot on sd, you either are full commit to being the best you can be or you never will be. i speak from experience. man i had alot of fun

Is there an open practice tomorrow? If so, what happens at those? Is media allowed to ask for interviews and what not? I am in IC all night tonight and all day tomorrow for my daughter’s softball tourney and they have tons of downtime where id prefer to do something productive opposed to spending all day trolling trolls who comment on my page.

Sorry if this is intrusive, but are you not on speaking terms with your brother or something? Not trying to pry, but its weird that you wouldn’t already have intel or even experience with this subject.

He and I have a mutual agreement to not discuss any of that stuff. Anymore, I discourage him strongly from saying ANYTHING to me regarding Hawkeye wrestling, whether it’s something minuscule like the open practice schedule or not. Whenever rumors and what not are posted by other sources, I don’t want him being the one who is blamed for leaking it. And if he is, I at least want HIM to know that it wasn’t me….and the only way he can know that for sure is if we just decide to never, ever bring anything up.

Why are you worried about whether the media will be there?

Worried? Who said I was worried? Was wondering. Because I will be in town and for every event I cover this year, I am putting pics, interviews, etc. from it in my subscription section so I can more easily support my family. This is something I wasn’t doing a year ago… I had to come up with something.

So yeah, figured I could use it as subscription content.

Ask a simple question…. Get questioned. 😆

Still hoping someone can answer my question! 🦍
Most open practices start about 3-4 hours to kickoff of the football game. I don’t get to go to many anymore so I’m pulling that from memory.

As for your second question I’m not sure.

Btw you and I have a mutual acquaintance. If you can send me a pm I’ll tell ya who that is.

That makes sense. It’s a well intentioned plan. Yet doesn’t it seem like that the paranoia around the Iowa wrestling team is much ado about nothing?

I’ve been fortunate enough to know a few people associated closely with the program over the years. A common joke we have is when is thenew bit of news gonna hit the airwaves. Every secret, most every secret, Iowa wrestling has is on a relatively short shelf life. That’s part of what comes with being a wrestling family that’s as well renowned as Iowa wrestling.

It’s almost as if they so badly want to keep a secret that they force info out by making it seem more important than it is.

I don’t know, it’s moreso that I know how bad it comes off with me… If I were them, I’d certainly wonder about me, if we are being honest. So over these past couple years I’ve learned that I will just have to go above and beyond to ensure it’s known by those who matter to me that it’s not… which is fair, IMO. I’ve even slowed down my binge drinking to ensure something like that never happens. It seems like every mistake I make in life is when I drink, so I figured that would be the safe route too.

I couldn’t give two craps about that type of commitment outside of the season. Living the lifestyle outside the season has me scratching my head. Our mid tier guys can keep coaches happy by living that lifestyle all year round. But that doesn’t win matches or championships these days. We seem to be more interested in recruiting guys who live that lifestyle all year long rather than guys who show up during the season to win championships.

Ok, I see your point. Seems a bit extreme, but logical.

There is this thread w/ a link to info on today’s practice:
https://iowa.forums.rivals.com/thre...ter-on-saturday-sept-30.426890/#post-11494627

Legend has it that it doesn’t go over too well with the coaches if you show up w/ a camera., though. And given your previously described concerns about disseminating information about the program, I’d recommend not trying to “cover” the practice without a previously agreed-upon arrangement.
