Oscar Boycott

I'm not a fan of the NBA either. Those names came to mind, too, but I really couldn't tell you too many players in the league now.

Some guy in Cleveland named Le-something-or-other.

Is Steph Curry white or black? He kind of falls into that Brandon Wegher "is he or isn't he" realm for me.

HawkCub will come along shortly to call me a dangerous racist.

Its always the next one. Focus on the now. Today your world view in in turmoil. Hollywood did exactly the opposite move. How do you know next season wont feature some great minority performances? Clearly Hollywood just demonstrated they are color blind. You will need to find a new boogeyman. I suggest clones or French people.
Never did like the clones.

Nominee List is too white. Hollywood is racist.

NEW YORK (AP) — Amid calls for a boycott of the Academy Awards over its all-white acting nominees and Spike Lee and Jada Pinkett Smith both announcing they would sit out this year's ceremony, the academy's president said it was time for major changes — and soon.

Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences President Cheryl Boone Isaacs issued a statement promising more diversity, and quickly, after both Lee and Pinkett spoke out Monday.

In a lengthy Instagram post, Lee said he "cannot support" the "lily white" Oscars. Noting that he was writing on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Lee — who in November was given an honorary Oscar at the Governors Awards — said he was fed up: "Forty white actors in two years and no flava at all," he wrote. "We can't act?!"

In a video message on Facebook, Pinkett Smith also said she wouldn't attend or watch the Oscars in February. Pinkett Smith, whose husband Will Smith wasn't nominated for his performance in the NFL head trauma drama "Concussion," said it was time for people of color to disregard the Academy Awards.

"Begging for acknowledgement, or even asking, diminishes dignity and diminishes power," she said. "And we are a dignified people and we are powerful."

She added: "Let's let the academy do them, with all grace and love. And let's do us differently." The video had amassed 4.5 million by mid-Monday afternoon.

Last year's all-white acting nominees also drew calls for a boycott, though not from such prominent individuals as Lee and Pinkett Smith. Whether it had any impact or not, the audience for the broadcast, hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, was down 16 percent from the year prior, a six-year low.

Isaacs has made a point of presenting a more inclusive show this year. The Feb. 28 broadcast will be hosted by Chris Rock and produced by "Django Unchained" producer Reginald Hudlin and David Hill. On Saturday, Rock, unveiling a new promotion for the broadcast, called the ceremony "The White BET Awards."

When Oscar nominations were announced Thursday, Isaacs acknowledged she was "disappointed" that all 20 acting nominees were again white and promised to "continue the conversation" on diversity. Isaacs has worked to diversify membership for the academy, which a 2012 study by the Los Angeles Times found is overwhelming white and male.

But on Monday, Isaacs was more explicit and promised an examination of the academy and a more intense drive to diversify.

"This is a difficult but important conversation, and it's time for big changes," she said in a statement released Monday night. "The Academy is taking dramatic steps to alter the makeup of our membership. In the coming days and weeks we will conduct a review of our membership recruitment in order to bring about much-needed diversity in our 2016 class and beyond."

Many awards handicappers expected nominations for Idris Elba of "Beasts of No Nation" and Benicio Del Toro for "Sicario." The N.W.A. biopic "Straight Outta Compton" also failed to earn a best picture nomination, despite some predictions it would. Ryan Coogler's acclaimed Rocky sequel "Creed" scored a nomination only for Sylvester Stallone. (Lee's own movie, the Chicago gang violence hip-hop musical "Chi-Raq" — celebrated by some and scorned by others — also went unnoticed.)

The hashtag "OscarsSoWhite," created last year, was quickly resurrected online following the nominations. The Rev. Al Sharpton — who last year met with former Sony head Amy Pascal following leaked emails that some viewed as racist — on Friday lambasted the academy.

"Hollywood is like the Rocky Mountains, the higher up you get the whiter it gets and this year's Academy Awards will be yet another Rocky Mountain Oscar," said Sharpton.

In his post, Lee made it clear the Academy Awards is only part of the problem in an industry with deep-rooted diversity issues. In his Governors Awards speech, Lee said, "It's easier to be the president of the United States as a black person than be the head of a studio."

"The Academy Awards is not where the 'real' battle is," wrote Lee. "It's in the executive office of the Hollywood studios and TV and cable networks. This is where the gate keepers decide what gets made and what gets jettisoned to 'turnaround' or scrap heap. This is what's important. The gate keepers. Those with 'the green light' vote."

I haven't watched the Oscars for 20+ years. I will definitely be watching this year.

That is a racist statement.

They need Sean Penn to run things.

His dad is a TV repairman. He has an awesome set of tools.

Judging from this thread alone...people that feel the need to voice how much they don't care about hollywood/award shows, and think "Hollywood" is overly PC while it accuses itself of being racist. Its weird and I don't understand it, but if I had to guess, the cause is likely tied to governance at the federal level.

Sounds like Will ("Tell da truth") Smith won't show up either. I think this was just a year where no minority actor stood out.
Minorities probably made up less than 20% of all actors in films released last year (guesstimate based on 2013 data that showed minority roles at 17%). So just based on the odds, it should be more difficult for a minority to be nominated.

I didn't think we were supposed to see colors? Or is that a one way street? I never would have noticed, or cared, had it not been plastered all over the news. I still don't care.

I think Benicio Del Toro deserves a nomination for his role in Sicario,he was excellent. As far as the rest of them staying away good just less narcissist in attendance.

The day after we are reminded of MLK's quote that he "look(s) to a day when people will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character", Hollywood wants to give participation awards based on the color of an actor's skin.

But, Hollywood being Hollywood: a diverse movie or actor will win a prestigious award next season.
King would have supported this...please get your head out of the "we shall overcome" bubble. Wasn't it King who called Ohura and told her not to quit Star Trek because "we need more black folks in Hollywood"? You people are hilarious...

We agree on something...again. Whites are shut out of the NBA...it is racist. Good white players are denied opportunity because of their skin color but whites will continue to pay money to watch a freak show devoid of teamwork and fundamentals...I guess boorish behavior and gangsta rap appeals to them.

Maybe black culture should stop making movies like 'Fifty Shades of Black' and all those 'Madea' movies.

There are a lot of people disguised as seats at many NBA games.I would not walk across the street to watch.

Maybe if black people would not talk as much during the movies, the Acadamy might get a chance to appreciate the performances.

I'm pretty sure Benicio Del Toro isn't black either.

I don't watch a lot of movies so I can't say who was or was not deserving, but I saw Straight Outta Compton in the theater. God bless NWA, and they 100% deserving of their enshrinement in the Rock and Roll HOF, but for the article to suggest that movie was Oscar-worthy does a disservice to film.

Never said he was black but in case you didn't know it there are other minorities beside black.

I'm actually enjoying all the liberal eat themselves. You have a predominately liberal industry (yeah, I know there are conservatives in hollywood.....but to suggest it isn't a liberal industry would be funny) and those that work within it are mostly liberal......and they're having issues with diversity!! It's high comedy if you ask me. This is a group that isn't bashful about telling others how to act and feel about social issues that effect minorities.......and here we are!

Can't we all just get along? I remember the good old days when actors/actresses, black and white, gay and straight, young and old, newbies and stars would eagerly walk up the stage steps to accept the coveted golden statue and then proudly profess their unbridled contempt and hatred for the President of the United States, George W Bush. For seven years now the critics have been silent on the political front as they clutch their golden idol despite the fact America continues war efforts in the Mideast with drone strikes, detainees still in Gitmo, a war in Afghanistan and participating in an over throw of a sitting dictator in Libya leading to a further advance of ISIS. Perhaps next year they will reunite in their hatred of the United States and President Trump specifically.

Just want to mention the way nominations work because none of the coverage I have seen mentions this. Nominations are voted on only by your peers. So actors vote to nominate actors and directors nominate directors etc. The 5 receiving the most votes in each category become the nominees. For me, this gives a little different perspective than the constantly repeated information that the Academy members are mostly white and older. That is true but this huge voting bloc only comes into play after the nominations are already determined. Then the whole Academy can vote for all the nominees.

Quick question: Will the seat fillers at the Oscars be the same race as the people they are filling in for?

I'd like to know which NBA team has more than 2 white starters on their top 5.

Also, why is this just blacks? WhEre are the hispanics, asians, muslims, etc that don't get oscars? Is it just one group that keeps beating the drum of (in)equality?

Sooooo...you watch this crap? Every year? You need a hobby.

So when is enough, enough to recognize a minority? If a certain minority has their own publications, tv network and awards to highlight themselves, and it is expected to be accepted by society When can we get past that recognize that we are all human beings ?

In today's world of "ME ME ME" there is never enough.

Holy crap! That reminds me, watching ABC Nightly News they had some Hollywood reporter who said "part of the problem is that 62% of the Awards board are elderly white males...."

No sh!t, you can't make it up. BTW, Will Smith is seriously PO'd and his wife Jada is driving this whole thing.

Will Smith is PO'd? I doubt that. I bet there were a lot of awkward conversations in that household until Will finally gave into his wife about backing her play. His balls in her purse? Probably.

This was exactly what I thought. One spouse makes an ass of themselves, then the other one has to tepidly stand by them. I've been on both sides of that scenario!
