OT - Alford

Alford should have stayed at New Mexico where he was established and was at a level he could be successful at.

Taking the UCLA job is a monumental task because what is considered success with that program given their history and even if you reach the zenith it's still 'what have you done for me lately' by the next season. You are taking that job to be fired. I would also think that would stink to have had your son spend his college career at a school you have no ties to and you will be fired from. Really sad when you think about it but another common story of ego and greed.

Really amazing that UCLA would hire Alford, after firing better coaches with much better resumes. He has been even worse at UCLA than he was at Iowa.

You guys all need to take a look at the number of five star recruits he has coming in next year. Just look at the Rivals 2016-2017 board and see

He has 2 five star recruits (plus a four star recruit) coming in next year and at LEAST one five star recruit coming in the year after that. Would you guys be happy with that?

When he got to UCLA it was a train wreck. He's been able during time he's been there to turn the recruiting situation around and UCLA is going to be formidable going forward.

Yeah UCLA fans really seem sold on him that's def the vibe I get from articles like this.

UCLA is a team that underachieved this season for one reason, Steve Alford. Alford is the first coach in UCLA in the Wooden or post Wooden era to finish worst than fourth in his third season and ties Steve Lavin in his last season (for which he was fired) for the worst PAC 12 season ever.

Please Dan Guerrero, make this Steve Alford's last game at Pauley.

It's always "next year" with Boy Wonder. He is a trainwreck of a coach - wish Iowa would have never made that mistake.

Lonzo Ball will allow Alford to keep his job for another year. One of the top 5 players in the country. He's a lot like Jason Kidd.

Not defending Alford, but he had very few upper classmen and then all the younger guys left for the NBA. He had 2 point guards in 1 year get drafted--the starter and the backup--I think Levine might have even been 3rd string. Obviously he is no Coach K, but at least Coach K has a bevy of upperclassmen to keep the program steady when he has freshmen leave. We all know Alford will be gone from there by next year. He would have been better off recruiting 4 star guys who would stay there longer, prior to getting the 5 star guys. I would think after he is gone from UCLA, no one would hire him to coach. He'd be damaged goods. Then it will even be worse. He probably will become an announcer and they will have him do alot Iowa games. Then we will have to listen to him. Its better off having him be the coach of another team that fails so we can laugh at the trainwreck. I would think it would be bad to listen to him announce an Iowa game, but I guess you never know.

Didn't Alford take that Big man project out of Tyler community college that Fran had been on for long time? Taking a project player at a school like UCLA smacked of desperation. We'll see if he can be successful on his own...he pretty much was clueless at Iowa pre-Neal.

It's not terribly difficult to recruit at UCLA, the place practically recruits itself. SA had better take that talent deep into the tournament or he will be fired. Lucky for him UCLA was dumb enough to give him that ridiculous buyout.

Are you serious his first year there he had a very good team. Train wreck would be the season ucla just had not the team he inherited. Alford has brought in highly rated recruits and will continue to do so not because of him because ucla always has and always will attract top talent. His big problem if you watch his offense the player it sets up the most is his son. I'm sorry with all that talent ucla attracts Bryce Alford shouldn't be your first option for shots and scoring at ucla.

Plus with this year it's not like the PAC 12 has been a dominant league. Arizona having a typical good season and Oregon is very good but to finish 10th is pathetic for a program like ucla. And on top of it last place wash St only conference win was you guessed it ucla.

Gary Payton II had a sweet windmill dunk off his own steal to defeat UCLA in Pauley 86-82 last night. Played in front of a sparse group of fans.

Great hire UCLA!!

But Alford can't coach.

It was Lute Olson who came to Arizona and made the
Wildcats a power house in the PAC10. In the process
he won an NCAA Tournament Title.

Steve Alford came to UCLA and did not restore the power
house status of the Bruins.

Bottom Line: Both were former coaches at Iowa, but only
Lute Olson took Iowa to a Final Four at the NCAA tournament.

I could have sworn he had a top 10 recruiting class at Iowa that didn't do squat in March.

Somebody mentioned in another thread but did Alford have an affair while @ Iowa?
I golfed with Bobby Hansen in a charity outing about 5 years ago and he told me as much... with a manager of a hotel (The Sheraton I think). Bobby made it clear he wasn't too fond of Steve.

I'm sure I posted something to this effect while Alford was here. Alford is one of those former great players who can only coach himself. He has the hot shooting guard (his son, Bryce) and all the other guys are just there to set screens. That's what he tried to do at Iowa until Neal came in and actually started coaching the WHOLE team. Without Noodles he's nothing.

If true, doubt Bobby wanted some no namer handle throwing his claim out on the Internet.

Sweet 16's are not near good enough at UCLA. Howland won the conference and got to the Sweet 16 and was fired. This year is as bad as UCLA has done in 3 decades methinks. He has a 10.5 Million dollar buy out. I would spend the money if I were them.

Alford has two sweet 16s at UCLA his first two years.
Want to bet on three? To his credit, Alford had always been a good tournament coach. But crappy seasons followed by Sweet 16s isn't going to cut it at UCLA.
